Looks on Campus - Sara, from Ohio University

A College Fashionista from Ohio University

Here at my study abroad site in Italy, I have a few classes during the week with Sara. She has been living in Turin since September and previously spent a year living in Sweden. Throughout her time abroad, she continues to be fashion forward, with an air of sophistication about her. Here’s an outfit I caught her in this week.

Who I Spotted

Name: Sara

Hometown: Jackson, Ohio

School: Ohio University

Age: 20

Year in College: Sophomore

Major: Journalism

What is your personal style philosophy? “I’d say that my style philosophy is that you can make anything work with enough confidence. My style is probably a bit more “dressed-up” or out-there than most college students, but as long as I feel comfortable in it than I don’t mind. Plus, I’ve always tried to stand out a bit from the mobs of Ugg boots and ‘PINK’ sweatpants that roam campus.”

What country that you’ve traveled to has the best fashion sense? “I may be biased since I lived in Sweden for a year but, surprisingly, Sweden has an incredibly modern and progressive fashion scene. I don’t know if it’s just the Swedish mentality in general or what but nearly everyone, whether it’s a 14-year-old boy or a 65-year-old-woman (and of course everyone in-between), seems to have a decent sense of style. Italy and Italians have a more classic style, as opposed to hopping on and off trends the way that Swedes do, but fashion in Italy seems to be pretty contained to big cities. So in general, for a country as a whole, I’d definitely have to go with Sweden.”

Where do you draw fashion inspiration from? “I think a get a little inspiration from everywhere. I am mostly inspired by people on the streets, fashion magazines and blogs, runway collections, shop windows, etc.”

Where do you find your most unique wardrobe pieces? “I don’t think I’d say that I have many truly unique pieces in my wardrobe. I shop at pretty standard, average stores: H&M, Zara, etc. In my opinion what makes an outfit unique is the way you pair different pieces and accessories to create a look or an outfit that’s your own. I love looking through vintage and second-hand stores but I feel like I have the worst luck in them.”

I really liked what she had to say for her fashion philosophy! I’m not really in love with her outfit as a whole, but I do love certain elements, like those shoes! Those, plus the pearls and feather hair clip give her a nice, retro flair which I do like.

I’m not a fan of this look because I feel that this particular outfit has aged her. She’s only 20 years old and there isn’t much youthfulness to this outfit in my eyes. Maybe even if she wore her down in unkempt waves, it would add some 20-something flair!

that should say, *wore her hair down*

I don’t love this look. I went to Ohio University, so I wanted to like it, but… she looks like a combo of prairie-meets-American-Girl-dolls. As someone else said – aged her a bit. My alma mater can do better. Sorry, Sara!

Yes, yes yes! Finally, someone that is honest about where she shops and the uniqueness of her clothing and mentions Zara! I love this store and I hate that it isn’t in the U.S. Zara would give Forever 21 a run for their money. Quality clothes for less!

Agreed, she has certain elements of her style that I love, but I don’t think the silhouette is flattering on her. Maybe a tighter shirt on top or longer pants to lengthen her legs.

I like some of the elements of her outfits, but she has too many “mature” elements, i.e. her shoes, pearls, hairstyle..etc, which make her look a lot older. It’d be nice if she wears something more casual, young and lively if she wants to implement these elements. I’d also suggest her to perhaps have ONE element per outfit instead of putting them all on to create this “older woman/teacher” look. Just my two cents :)

Sara’s a pretty girl but I agree that the look ages her. She’s also very skinny but I think that her top and the cut of the pants are making her look bigger than she actually is.

I agree, I love the concept of this outfit and the whole wholesome preppy Americana of it, but it might’ve worked if she wore black ballet flats a la Audrey, or swapped out the pants for a shirt-dress with tights. Elements in moderation, right?

I’m also not that amazed by her outfit… but she’s right about the Swedes :)
I wish everyone dressed like they do

I can’t agree more with the comments above… The whole outfit creates the “teacher” look and this particular shirt with those particular pants isn’t very flattering either, as it makes her bigger and shortens her legs, even with those heeled booties.

the pants make her look too short, but i like the shoes :D

I agree with everyone else here. And I love the shoes, I actually have them ;D

I actually go to OU right now…she’s right about the Uggs and sweats. Maybe the look ages her a bit, but believe me, it’s way more pretty and stylish than what a lot of people wear around here.

The accessories are amazing, but I have to say that those pants need to be longer!! They make her legs so much shorter!!

She needs to dress younger. After all, you’re only 20 once! Older ladies always try to look younger, why don’t the young appreciate their youth and dress like it?

She’s super pretty, but I’m not sure the outfit… I like the necklace and the shoes, though!

I feel like the outfit doesn’t do anything for her body. It makes it look really awkward and boxy :(

I agree with all the previous comments about how the look does not flatter her body type or age. I do however love her hair!!!

Aaahh stop with the teacher comments! I’m going to be a future teacher and I do NOT dress like that!

Like many of you have previously stated, parts of her outfit are very good, but I would not put them all together. I love the pearls and I love her hair, but the highwater pants just don’t work with the booties.

PS, to whomever said Zara doesn’t exist in the US… it does! I’m in DC & there’s one down the street from me!

i love all of the pieces! Each is great/beautiful/interesting, but i don’t think it works together as one whole outfit.

I like parts of this outfit, like the shoes. And I agree it DOES make her look older, but I am a strong believer that it’s the way a person carries themself that makes them look older (or younger!). Maybe if she smiled in a more youthful way and had a sassier posture it would work.
