Looks on Campus: Maitri

“Looks on Campus” is a new weekly feature where we showcase real college students and their style. After all, what better way to gain fashion inspiration then from our fellow peers? You never know, we might take your picture next!

This week, I caught up with Maitri when I couldn’t help but notice her amazing attire!

Who We Spotted:

Name: Maitri

Hometown: Phoenix, Arizona

Age: 19

Year in college: Sophomore

Major: Creative Writing

Hobbies & Interests: “Reading, drawing, painting, writing, and baking!”

Describe your style: “I’m simple…edgy/hard, but still girly.”

Who or what inspires your style? “The designer Balmain, looking at the Sartorialist, and fashion blogs.”

Where do you like to shop? “Urban Outfitters, Gap, Forever 21, American Apparel, and occasionally, J. Crew.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I got these jeans in the mail yesterday, so I was excited to wear them!”

Elements of Maitri’s Outfit:

* Bandeaus look great under semi-sheer tanks, or tanks that have a lower arm cut. I like how Maitri paired a black bandeau with a white tank – contrasting colors are very eye-catching!

* Bleached jeans are very popular this season and are a great alternative to the traditional blue jean!

* Mixing in metallic pieces (like Maitri did with her gold sandals) can take the place of gold or silver jewelry. No need for extra accessories when your shoes grab this much attention!

Oh definitely not. I have only really seen one or two pairs of bleached jeans that look cute to me, and this isn’t one of them. And visable bras/pretend bras/bandeaus? Nooo way. It just looks trashy especially in the daytime…

I’m not a huge fan of this outfit, but I love the idea of the post. Can’t wait to see who else you find!

I have to agree with Ally, I love the idea of this weekly post, but i’m definitely not fond of this outfit. Bleached jeans are a no-go trend because they rarely look cute and I hardly see anyone other than celebs taking that chance. Bandeaus are great under large flowy tanks, but the white on this one is a little too sheer. :-/

As trendy as this outfit is, that’s my problem with it. Where’s the originality? it’s all trends, with nothing else added. Your suggestion is a bit better, with the earrings, but unfortunately your suggestion is not on her. The bleached jeans look extremely unflattering, and I often find the bandeau and tank look very tasteless, this is one of those cases.

I like the idea of this feature though!

Contrary to what others have said, I actually like this outfit. I think Maitri pulls it off really well and its nice to see real people (not celebrities) rocking the trends. At first I was really skeptical about bleached jeans, because I don’t think I could pull them off, but I’ve grown to like them and really wish I could pull them off so I could wear them myself.

Looking forward to more of these articles!

I love her bandeau under the loose, semi-sheer white tank! We’re young — let’s have fun with our bodies and push the envelope!

I absolutely love this new feature! However, I’m not really a fan of the bleached jeans. Some looks should just stay in the 80s.

I’m not sure how original this is, or flattering, but the idea of capturing student style is great! So many of us college girls love style…..awesome post!

I think she looks trashy. I love the idea of this feature, but I don’t know about complementing that style. It just looks like her bra is showing, and I don’t care what designers and celebrities say, bleached jeans are not cute.

I remember seeing her on a livejournal community i was a part of, I always admired her style!

mm i have to agree.. I love the idea of these posts, but bleached denim doesn’t look flattering at all. Also she looks like she stole the style straight out of a magazine. It has no originality or creativity and it says nothing about who she is.

I think the look is really cute. It’s edgier which she said is her style. I love it, I know I could’t pull it off, but I think it’s a really great rocker chic look for daytime.

I’m going to be redundant and say more of these posts, but I would never wear this outfit….especially the visible bra. Even the greatest figure or lingerie need not be aired on a coed campus in broad daylight, with no offense to Maiti. The jeans are pretty cool, though, even if they’re not my personal style! Love this post idea, too, so much. Can’t wait to see what my fashionable peers on other campuses are wearing!!

Glad you guys like the feature. Honestly I’m surprised more of you don’t like the look though! While I don’t think it’s the most flattering photo, I’d totally wear something similar to this look, albeit maybe with solid black shoes and a bracelet or two. And idk what it is but I personally love the bleached jeans right now.

Interesting to see the mix of opinions, though!

Maitri’s outfit is a great example of a lot of trends that are hit or miss depending on who’s judging…props to her for rocking bleached jeans. although that trend isnt for me, i admire her for having the guts to try it! maybe this isnt the best outfit, but im really impressed with her style. she seems to know whats “in” and isnt afraid to try everything out. i think her courage makes up for the lack of originality in this outfit. and i love the idea of these posts, keep it up!

I’m not a fan of the visible-bra/bandeau-under-sheer-shirt look. That bothers me more than the jeans

I have to jump on the “I’m not a big fan of this look” wagon also. I don’t like bleached jeans. Never have, never will. And while bandeau tops under tanktops with lower arm cuts can be cute, I don’t like the contrast of the black under the white. With that said though, this is a great new feature!

i pretty much agree with everyone else. I love the idea of this post and seeing real girls rocking the trends instead of celebrities, but I don’t love how these looks were pulled off. I think the girl is sooo pretty, but her visible bra looks like an accident, not a fashion trend. and i’m still not feeling those heavily bleached jeans, they always seem to look cheap to me.

Although it is a great outfit, I wouldn’t wear something similar to Maitri’s look because it is too trendy. Maitri displays a bandeau and bleached jeans which may go out of style next season. And as an incoming freshman I plan on not shopping for what’s “in” today, but for time lasting pieces.

I think for the majority of the responders the purpose of this article was not fully understood; perhaps they are unable to grasp the concept of individuality and can only mimic the styles they see on celebrities… Instead of judging the outfit just on whether or not it fits into their personal style, the viewer should be applauding the concept of pushing the envelope and taking chances. A person isn’t going to be featured in an article like this, especially in College Fashion, if they don’t possess an unique interpretation of fashion. To stand out amongst thousands of well dressed girls on a college campus a student can’t just wear the newest trendy shoe from Steve Madden, a Coach purse and a dress off the racks of Urban. A person needs to own a style and wear something that isn’t just safe and already popular. While this girl’s individual pieces of clothing aren’t something I would personally infuse into my own style, I still admire her look and unique concept of fashion.

Maybe next time people should open their eyes, quit being so judgmental and learn what it means to be an individual.

This is Kind of a lot of trends at once. She is a very pretty girl, though.

Not trying to create problems, just saying:

To Torrie : “Maybe next time people should open their eyes, quit being so judgmental and learn what it means to be an individual.”

They ask readers for their opinion – “What do you think?” So people are doing just that. People are allowed to disagree and not have someone calling them judgmental.

Maitri, I could never rock this look but you look AMAZING doing it. I especially love your hair and if you read this and would like to give a quick how to, you will have a new fan.

Kristina, great article! I’m excited to see more of this.

Zephyr, you’ve chosen some amazing new writers, I love College Fashion, this is exciting!
