Looks on Campus: Kallan – Wesleyan University

Now that the spring semester is in full swing, everyone’s been hitting the books like crazy! Luckily, the weather has eased up a bit, and we’ve been able to release some post-winter stress! During one of my study breaks, I decided to take advantage of the warmer weather to take a walk across campus. I ran into Kallan, who also decided to use the weather to break out an outfit perfect for the warmer weather (and studying in comfort).

Kallan 101

Wesleyan University fashionista

Name: Kallan

School: Wesleyan University

Hometown: Lake Forest, Chicago, IL

Class Standing: Freshman

Major: [Prospective] Film Major

Hobbies/Interests: “Singing, reading, and playing guitar.”

Let’s Talk Fashion

How would you describe your personal style? “I would describe myself as a mix of mild-eclectic and Earthy-hippie. I come from a very preppy town in Chicago, so I always try to stand out from the crowd and dress differently from everybody else.”

What are your favorite places to shop? “I love Free People and Topshop, and I get lots of my shoes from Urban Outfitters. I also like to shop at Target and thrift stores. I can be pretty random at times – if I see something I like, I’ll buy it!”

Who are your favorite designers? “I like Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang. I’m also a fan of Wildfox Couture.”

What is your style inspiration? “I really like Sienna Miller’s and Kate Moss’s styles. I’m also really inspired by European trends (especially the French!).”

Elements of Kallan’s Outfit

1. Studded Sweater, Crop Tee, Harem Pants

Fashion at Wesleyan University - studded sweater, crop tee and harem pants

The combination of studs and cutout sleeves make this simple black cardigan into a trendy statement piece. Kallan told us, “I love this sweater a lot – I actually got it in Paris! And it looks great with anything – including my Topshop tee!” Kallan’s cotton harem pants by Silence & Noise harmonize this look by keeping it both casual and trendy.

2. Multiple Rings

Wesleyan University style - rings

Rings are a great, easy way to add style to a simple outfit – plus you can get away with mixing and matching them! “I love rings,” Kallan says, “Two of the ones I’m wearing now are by Marc Jacobs, and the third is actually a custom ring my sister bought me from a local designer.”

3. Spring Sneakers

I love Kallan’s graphic print sneakers from Urban Outfitters. They’re super fun and quirky, and the simple black/white color palette allows them to be paired with dozens of outfits!

I looooove the jacket and shoes, but, and this is just my personal opinion on fads, the rest of the outfit is just kind of hitting me over the head with trends. I would have preferred either the cropped top OR the harem pants–the pants are too drapey to counterbalance the looseness of the top. But, again, that’s just me. I also really dislike cropped tops, so I’m a bit biased over here.

I couldn’t agree more with Carolyn. Kallan looks costumey to me–like she’s deliberately trying to incorporate all the 80s inspired trends that are big right now. I love the individual pieces, but together it’s too much.

I really like this look and think it’s different from the kind of thing I normally would see featured here! Personally, even though it’s not my style, I find this look inspiring. I love seeing girls that don’t play it safe and aren’t afraid to wear unconventional things. Great choice!

I think the overall appearance is a bit like gym clothes–sneakers, sweats, t-shirt. But individually I love the pieces. I think the harem pants would look better without the sweater adding more to the baggy shape. The crop top really shows of Kallan’s (GREAT) stomach but the sweater kind of hides it again.

I really love her unique style, although it’s not sth I would wear. I think I love her book but it probably looks better with heels not sneaker. This is cool style and that crop top is fab!!

The crop top is pretty ballsy. Kudos.

Frankly, it looks like she was on the way to Yoga. Like Carolyn said, the flowy nature of the top warrants a more structured bottom. I think this look is inappropriately undone.

I dont really understand what people are complaining about. I think it looks fine! While I would have worn a pair of skinny jeans or leggigs instead of the loose pants, I think it looks casual and comfortable. Maybe thats just more her style. True, the outfit is a mishmash of trends, but i think the overall asthetic is great and the pieces fit together well. And, heck, if I had a stomach like hers I would *totally* wear crop tops! ;P

I like the daring! Although personally, I would not be wearing cropped anything with snow on the ground.

Unfortunately, although she is gorgeous, i feel this outfit doesn’t do her justice. The shape of the outfit is a bit too baggy. As someone else said i think she should either do baggy on the top or bottom, and have the opposite be a more form fitting look. ie, the crop top, skinny jeans, and the sweater. also, maybe it is just the photo? i would like to see a full sized shot without her hands in her pockets.

Interesting style – I envy her ability to wear crop tops and harem pants (don’t have the confidence for the first, and the second look ridiculous on me). Love the sweater! :)

A controversial choice by College Fashion! Personally I would not wear the cropped top or the harem pants. (Not just in winter, but ever.) The jacket is more acceptable but still not my style. The shoes and rings are cool though!

I really like her ability to start pulling pink into her spring wardrobe. i like the sweater, it’s unique with the studs! she looks like she’s having fun with her clothes and thats an important part of fashion…mixing it up!

She’s absolutely beautiful and I really admire that she mixes up many different styles–she’s definitely got the looks to pull them off! It’s alright if it’s not your style, it’s hers and what matters is that she rocks it and she looks great… total BABE!

I’m obsessed with the jacket and she’s got ridiculous abs, I’m jealous!

i’m all for doing your own thing in terms of fashion, but this honestly just looks really sloppy and kind of boring. individually the pieces are amazing, but thrown together it just doesn’t do it for me.

Know for a fact that it is was too cold in Chicago to be wearing crop tops quite yet…

Well, I am a sporty girl too, but this outfit just doesn’t do for me. I don’t like it, looks way sloppy… but that’s really just me. she is a beautiful girl, but I don’t like her style at all.

It looks like she came straight out of an MC Hammer video… I love it!!!

She’s pretty, but I don’t like this outfit much at all. Not so much because it screams ’80s’ but because of the way she styled the items. I think she could have done without the hoodie, the sneakers, and the cropped top (essentially the whole outfit), and swapped them with less casual things to balance the already casual harem pants.

she seems nice and i admire her for dressing according to her own style, but yikes.. i got chills just looking at her..crop tops are for summer time! i cringe when i see girls wearing crop tops in this weather. or walking in flats through the snow (which im seeing here, even on a day where we had 25 cm of snow?!)

Wow! What a babe, she clearly has her own unique style and can rock anything. I wish I could pull any of this off, but alas, the beautiful women out there will always get the glory. Keep rocking everybody’s socks off Kallan!! Love Ya ;)
