Looks on Campus: Jordan – Yale University

Looks on Campus - Jordan from Yale University

As I was walking to breakfast in my residential college, I couldn’t help but notice the fierce style (and hair) donned by Jordan, a sophomore at Yale University. The photogenic Jordan was more than happy to participate in a photo shoot and answer a few questions about her style.

Hometown:
“Mesquite, Texas… suburb of Dallas, and home of the Mesquite Championship Rodeo. Yeah, I AM serious.”

Major:
“American Studies with a ‘Visual, Audio, Literary, and Performance Cultures’ focus”

What are your hobbies and interests?
“Theater, baking apple crumb pies, watching football, reading as much Tennessee Williams and Jane Austen as I can get my hands on, and drinking WAY too much Starbucks coffee!”

How would you describe your style?
“Simple pieces and bright colors for bold statements. Oh, and it’s really all about the effect from the shoulders up- a dash of makeup and attention to the hair.”

Jordan, our Yale fashionista of the week

You only have three words to describe your style. Go.
“Simple, yet intentional. I take pride in my appearance. I put myself together EVERY morning, without exception. Too many people confuse attention to detail as excess, which is simply not the case.”

Where is your favorite place in the world to be?
“That has to be in a car of Trenitalia, chugging through the Tuscan countryside, looking out of the window at ENDLESS fields of sunflowers.”

Favorite style decade?
“I’d like to say the 50′s; if you look back on any of the major advertisements of the day, it was all about bright colors or bold patterns, but always, ALWAYS classy, feminine, and again, intentional. Pearls while vacuuming? Why, yes. Women back then CHOSE to look good, and consequently, did. Thank you, June Cleaver.”

Pet peeves?
“Laziness and apathy. Sure, there are things that don’t spark my fancy, but I just choose to spend my time being productive and working on things about which I am passionate. Passion is so attractive in a person.”

Favorite stores to shop in?
“If I had the bank account for it, I would be ALL OVER Ralph Lauren – classic, colorful style. But stores such as Express, H&M, and Forever 21 are friendlier on the wallet… ”

How and why did you choose this outfit?
“I think it illustrates my bright-yet-simple philosophy. It makes a strong statement while keeping me warm in this crazy New Haven weather. And the glasses are my staple, so I tend to wear black accents to match the black frames. Okay, okay, so that’s a little neurotic… ”

As for the most distinctive, interesting aspect of her ensemble (in my opinion)…

Jordan's hair

I have to ask. You probably knew this was coming. The hair?
“You know, I get asked that a lot. I tend to just laugh and say, ‘Hey, when you grow up in the land of blondes, tans, and beauty queens, you LEARN to use your hairspray and teasing comb!’ (laughs) But, really, I do think of my hair as essentially part of my daily outfit, an accessory of sorts. Notice, I don’t wear many accessories, so I work it in this way.”

My thoughts on Jordan’s look

What I really enjoyed about Jordan’s outfit was its overall strength, which comes from the bold colors, unique glasses, simple yet classy shoes (I suppose this is the black accent she was talking about), and incredible hair. The shoes are a particularly wise choice because they go with everything, but look different from what most girls wear on campus. Next time I have the opportunity to hit the mall, I’m definitely purchasing some Jordan-inspired oxford kicks.

Jordan’s hair is also worth another mention. At most universities, Yale included, many girls are afraid to experiment with their hair. What girls need to realize is that hair is one of our best assets, an easy means of flattering your face shape and grabbing attention. Jordan has urbanized the southern-belle look, something hugely creative and inspiring for fashionistas everywhere!

While personally that outfit isn’t my style, I have to give the girl props- I LOVE her style! so chic and stylish and very on trend with the high heeled oxfords. I love that skirt too. She just seems like a cool person to hang with.. Anyway I just ha to comment- and I love that she took a risk with the hair, though I personally would never tease my hair that high. One of my favorite looks on campus for sure though! I liked the interview too- very good read. :) keep up the amazing job.

I love her confidence! Between the color combination and the hair, she looks unique and stylish.

(Also, I agree with her about laziness – it’s one of my pet peeves, too!)

While I personally think that style only works for rail-thin girls, her color combo is adorable and her heels are fantastic, although I can’t imagine schlupping around campus in three inch heels.

It is very interesting to see how directly her hometown affects her style choices – gives a true sense of individuality, plus, she seems like a very chill person to hang out with.

Best feature in this series so far! She looks adorable, and I love the colour combinations – I wouldn’t have thought bright green and a purple skirt would have worked so well together. She seems like a fun person too after reading your interview with her. Great post!

I like her style, even though it’s very different from my own. The hair is risky but she pulls it off well! Also, I can’t walk around the campus with any heels whatsoever so the shoes aren’t for me, though I must say they go wonderfully with the whole outfit.

Certainly the most creative look that you have featured so far! Fierce hairstyle :)

Love her outfit! She can so pull off the retro look. Not really feeling her hair. The side “Snookie Poof” isn’t really doing it for me. I like how she has a different sense of style then anyone else featured in this series. I also wanted to say I love how this series has become more frequent. Seeing fashion on real college girls makes looks a lot more accessible in my opinion. Great work!

The outfit is so cute on her! Not a fan of the hair, but uniqueness is a good thing! :)

I think she looks fierce! The problem is I think her style is flattering for the very slim body types- do you think fuller figured women could pull the look off?

Love the Looks on Campus series!

I LOVE her outfit! This is my favorite ‘look on campus’ so far. But the hair is a bit much for me. You didn’t make any example outfits with this one :-(

This is the only Look On Campus I actually really loved. The colors are so cute together.. and while I personally wouldn’t be able to pull off the hair, it works so cute with her outfit!

Her hair looks dorky. It doesn’t suit her. I like her top though…

I don’t like the hair, but the rest of the outfit looks great. The shoes are amazing, wish I had a pair of those. And the skirt is also really pretty.

What is that thing on top of her head. Also, there are plenty more stylish people at Yale worthy of being featured on this blog. Just saying.

While I do LOVE her hair and her style, my one criticism is of her glasses. She’s clearly a very intelligent girl, so why not ditch the generic frames and go for something more…literary?

I love her style! The hair is a little different–and that is seriously a good change from the usual. I love how you can change something so ordinary like a pony tail, or a poof (I am sure it has a better name) to something more interesting and personalized.

Great sense of style, I love her hair! I don’t agree with her on the trenitalia thing, though…I travel with trenitalia EVERY day to my university and it’s a mess! They’re often late and the cars aren’t comfortable at all! But she’s right about the landscape :)

Her style is so simple yet feminine. Ooh, I love her hair… reminds me of Jersey Shore’s Snookie but it looks nice on her instead:) I got to give major props of pulling the hair off.
