Looks on Campus: Houston

houston-heading

This week I ran into Houston. I could not help but notice her natural beauty and effortless style. What really caught my eye was the color palette of her outfit. I personally never thought of pairing brown, green, and white together, but I think Houston pulls it off wonderfully.

Who I Spotted:

looks-on-campus-Houston

Name: Houston

Hometown: Tucson, Arizona

Age: 18

Year in College: Freshman

Major: Physiology

Hobbies & Interests: “I’m a big movie buff! I also like calligraphy, and of course, I study.”

Describe your style: “It’s hard to say because it changes every day depending on my mood. Some days I’m hard and tough with leather and studs, but other days, like today, I’m more simple.”

Who or what inspires your style? “I like keeping up with fashion shows and checking up on my favorite designers. My favorite designers right now are Gucci and Balmain, and although I can’t always afford their stuff I can look!”

Where do you like to shop? “I buy vintage things a lot. I also go to Buffalo Exchange and Off 5th [the Saks Fifth Avenue outlet store]. My mom is also a flight attendant, so when I travel to Paris or Madrid I try and pick up a new piece. I even got a fur vest in Paris!”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “My mom bought me this shirt, so I wanted to wear it for her. Then, I decided this skirt goes well with the color.”

Elements of Houston’s Outfit:

1. Cowboy Boots!

I really like these boots because they have cowboy touches, while still being very classic. They appear very well made and versatile (see below for more ways to wear them)!

When Houston and I were chatting, she mentioned that in college it’s hard to find appropriate times to wear a heel to school. These boots have a small wedged heel that are still tasteful with her mini skirt.

2. Use of Juxtaposition!

Although Houston’s outfit appears simple, don’t let that fool you! Her outfit screams juxtaposed details such as:

a) Color Contrasts: The use of green next to white! Who would have thought this could be pulled off so well! Her True Religion skirt also pairs white denim with tan and red seams!

b) Soft vs. Rough: The top is very silky and smooth, whereas the jean skirt has a cut-off, frayed look that is rather edgy!

3. A Great Fashion Philosophy!

Houston emphasized that her mood really reflects her style. If she’s feeling tough, she will sport leather and pieces with studded details. However, she also isn’t afraid to tone it down and showcase her ability to throw together simple outfits.

Looks Inspired by Houston:

Through these outfits I’m trying to portray elements of Houston’s style. These pieces are all available right now for purchase!

You may notice that my outfits are much more accessorized than Houston’s. This may not be suitable for you, but I’m an accessory junkie! I love picking out accessories for outfits, so I hope you enjoy my picks!

I really like this post and the concept of it as well. I was wondering if you could request that readers send in photos of themselves or of their friends that you may be able to choose from for this post as well. I feel that if you only showcase Arizona students that the fashions represented at schools in colder locales won’t be shown. Again, love this post but I hope that some cold weather fashions will be shown too!

I love this post concept! And even though I’m not a fan of Houston’s outfit, I do love the color palette and the last outfit idea… really adorable! I want that purse and that dress! :)

I’m pretty sure those boots are from target and are only 50 bucks. Just bought a pair last week. Comfy so far. Good luck on the hunt.

I’m really glad everyone likes “Looks on Campus” so far! I’m definitely trying to hunt down girls from other colleges, and I’ll be taking some weekend trips this semester, so I’ll be on the lookout for girls all over the country!

I looove her use of color, and I love the second outfit idea. However, I must say that the shirt from the first outfit idea does not look very flattering nor stylish, no matter the color. But otherwise, love this article! <3

QUOTING:”I’m pretty sure those boots are from target and are only 50 bucks. Just bought a pair last week. Comfy so far. Good luck on the hunt”

the boots are by frye….you can tell by the detailing and the signature buckle….they are about 4 time more expensive then the boots you are talking about from target

I saw similar boots on Urban Outfitters earlier this year. I like the freshness of the colored shirt, and the pairing with the white skirt, but I dislike the proportion of miniskirt and calf-length boots – just makes a weird proportion in my eyes. Either way, it does express her style!

I’m not really a fan of Houstins outfit. The proportions and style just arent great. but I adore the 1st recreation you made adorable! the second ones not really my style. I deffinently think you should continue this though! but we dont really need a recap of the interveiw you have with the person. anyway, love everything else! good job

Would it be possible if “Looks on Campus” can showcase more than 1 girl at a time?

I think Houston looks great! I would never think to pair such things together and that is why I love this feature – it makes me think outside the box! :)
Houston, you’re gorgeous and have a really cool name!

I’m really not a fan of those boots with her outfit (though the boots are lovely), but the colors do go great with one another. Loving the green J Crew dress in the second recreation.

I absolutely adore these Looks on Campus posts! I especially LOVED the topshop skirt and I went to topshop.com with full intent to buy it… and then I saw the price! $135? For a skirt? That doesn’t exactly fit in with my college budget… maybe your next post could feature additional, more budget-friendly items for those of us who can’t spend $250+ on an outfit?

I agree that the color palette is nice. I like the last outfit that you put together, Kristina. That looks like a very “Me” outfit. I’d definitely wear that! :)

great post Kristina, Houston’s outfit is soo cute. I really like it. and I like that you included the interview, unlike another poster, because I love hearing just a little about the girl behind the outfit. I think it was an excellent combo of fashion and background on the girl :)

I love the outfits you made and I don’t think you’re overkill on the accessories at all. The only thig I didn’t like is the green coldwater creek shirt from the first outfit. It didn’t seem like it fit.
Overall great post! I can’t wait for more

Either or, the boots look EXTREMELY similar. So much so, that you could barely tell the difference in a photograph. And sine I’m an art student ..aka..college girl, on a budget, I thought I’d point out a cheap and cute item that I know exists, since I don’t normally shop in the 200s range.

I officially want every piece of the last outfit based on Houston’s color palette. <3 !
