On the first day of classes at Skidmore College, I saw Hannah walking outside the on-campus apartments. Her outfit looked comfortably cute – perfect for making a great first impression without trying too hard.
It was also ideal for the rapidly approaching summer-to-fall transition here in upstate New York. I stopped to discuss her inspiration for choosing this well put-together and layered look.

Let’s Talk Fashion
Who or what inspires your style? “I get inspiration from a lot of the looks I see around campus and I try to recreate them with my own pieces.”
How would you describe your personal sense of style? ”If I had to choose two words, they would be trendy and comfortable. I try to use functional pieces that are cute enough for class but also wearable for work in the lab and the dining hall.”
Why did you choose this particular outfit? ”I borrowed this dress from my friend because I needed something cute for the first day of class that I could also put over a dance leotard.”
What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? ”The best source of inspiration is from the internet. Look at street style websites and keep up with changing trends. It really isn’t too hard to put together outfits that look nice.”
What are your favorite trends right now? ”Layering is a great way to stay warm while still being on-trend. Biker jackets and denim jackets are really in right now. I also like dainty rings because they don’t get in the way and they class up any outfit.”
What do you do for fun – do you have any unique hobbies or interests? ”I love the arts. Drawing, DIY-ing, and making jewelry are entertaining projects. In fact, I made my bracelet here!”
If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “Vanessa Hudgens wears things that are really easy and adorable; perfect for places like music festivals and summery cities. Coming from San Francisco, I love her bohemian vibe mixed with classic and edgy pieces.”
Elements of Hannah’s Outfit:
1. Graphic Dress
This borrowed Urban Outfitters dress was a great snag for the first day of classes at Skidmore College. The textured and graphic aspects of the top make it more unique than a basic black frock. It is also a versatile piece that can either be worn casually or dressed up.
2. Whimsical Rings & Bright Nail Polish
Hannah reminds us of a great styling tip: fashion extends much further than your outfit! Nail polish and accessories are important touches that have the ability to make an outfit come to life. Hannah’s nail polish helps keep this outfit summery while her rings from Claire’s add a bohemian flavor.
3. Converse Sneakers
One great way to zip around campus in comfort? Converse sneakers. Not only are they ultra-casual, but they are also a widely-loved staple in the fashion world. The addition of Converse low-tops to this jacket-and-dress combo make the outfit much more practical and sporty.
4. DIY Arm Candy
Hannah’s keen DIY sense led to this creation – her wrap bracelet! A little mix of color, paired with her watch, was a great accessory choice for her chosen outfit. Keep in mind that many classrooms don’t have clocks, so watches definitely come in handy.
