Simon & Garfunkel have two 3-CD box sets collecting their entire career output, one with out-takes and live recordings, but the duo who were among the bestselling acts of the 1960s only recorded five studio albums throughout the entire 1960s! Their studio perfectionism is never better served than here. This greatest hits is simple and to the point, a perfect collection for anyone looking to get the basic idea (and hits) without committing to a more serious relationship. The harmonies, Paul Simon's masterful songwriting, Garfunkel's soaring choirboy voice, are all here. --Rob O'Connor

In my opinion, it contains most of the duo’s best music, certainly, the biggest hits are here. "The Sound of Silence" (1964), "Mrs. Robinson" (1968), and "Bridge over Troubled Water" (1970) reached number one in the U.S. singles charts. In 2003, the album was ranked number 293 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
There are 14 songs and there is a mix of original studio recordings and four previously unreleased live recordings. The music was recorded between 1964 and 1969. All but two of the songs were written by Paul Simon. There are no liner notes, which is disappointing. The booklet does not list the musicians, but Hal Blaine (drums) and Larry Knechtel (keyboards) from the Wrecking Crew played on most of their albums. The main drawback is the sound quality, which is poor. The duo was huge in its day and the record company is charging full price. This CD should have been remastered.
Paul Simon met his British girlfriend Kathy Chitty at a folk club in Brentwood, outside London, in the 1960s. He had moved to England in 1964 and toured the folk clubs. Simon heard Scarborough Fair, which is an old English folk song, in the clubs. He also recorded a folk album called ‘The Paul Simon Songbook’ in London. It was just Simon on acoustic guitar. The record was not released in the U.S. Three of those songs appear on this collection, however, they were later re-recorded in the U.S. with additional musicians. There is a photo of Kathy Chitty on the album’s cover. She is mentioned in ‘America,‘ and 'Homeward Bound’ and ‘Kathy’s Song’ are about her. After ‘The Sound of Silence’ became a million seller, Simon returned to the U.S. and left Kathy behind. However, Simon's biographer mentioned that they still remained friends.
Simon & Garfunkel became friends in fourth grade. By the end of 1969, they had become superstars but conflicts arose. They split in 1970. There are conflicting views on what happened, but it seems to have been triggered by Art's decision to pursue an acting career. Simon was not interested in waiting around while Art made movies. To summarise, this is a great album, that needs a remastering job.
"The Sound of Silence" was my window on the world. It was how I viewed what was going on around me. I whispered my own tortured sentiments into the darkness, wishing that others would awaken to what I saw happening around me. It was the era of the Viet Nam war, and the nation was in a state of unrest. It was the time of hippies and the Black Panthers, of war protestors and illegal drug use.
"Scarborough Fair/Canticle" superimposed my peaceful eastern Kentucky home life onto the world at large, and, again, the Viet Nam war.
"Homeward Bound" took me toward a safer place, although I was at home while listening to the music, and contemplating my world.
"The Boxer" reminded me of the grim realities of trying to make my way in the world as a young adult.
"The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" added a kick of fun to otherwise dreary thoughts.
Later, "Bridge Over Trouble Water" and "El Condor Pasa (If I Could)" both provided a bridge to a safer place in life, and they soothed what troubled me.
I never cared for "Cecilia". "Mrs. Robinson", although a catchy tune, I rejected because of the movie to which it was tied. The other songs I barely listened to, but I did like "America" some, and "Bookends" a bit.
The applause was something for which I did not care. I get into the music and the lyrics, and they transport me to an inward place of meditation and introspection. The applause tends to ruin that effect! It jars me back into reality!
All in all, this is an important collection of songs that actually helped shape my thinking, and my life, as I grew into adulthood. I recommend it for those who think deeply, as well as those who love poetic lyrics in their music.
