Fashion Inspiration: The Spice Girls

Ever since catching their performance at the Olympics Closing Ceremony, my love for the Spice Girls has been rekindled tenfold. These ’90s icons not only produced catchy music, starred in a feel-good movie, and helped to popularize the term “girl power,” but they also had fantastic style to boot. Whether you were athletic, girly, edgy, or glam, everyone related to a particular Spice Girl and their unique style.
And who says our elementary school faves can’t be a fantastic source of fashion inspiration? Read on to check out some stylish, budget-friendly and totally wearable outfits inspired by each of the five Spice Girls.
Ginger Spice
The fiery-haired feminist with an attitude to match, Geri rocked her sultry outfits with confidence and ease. Her most recognizable ensemble was the famous Union Jack dress, so I came up with a modern and stylish take on this iconic look.
Start by pairing a Union Jack sweater with a fitted red pencil skirt, which helps play up the bombshell look. Heeled ankle booties add a fashion-forward vibe, while a peace sign bracelet pays homage to her signature pose. Finally, put on some deep red lipstick to complete this sultry outfit with a modern twist.

Sporty Spice
Clad in tracksuits and sneakers, Mel C. arguably had the most comfortable wardrobe in the group and — lucky for us — sportswear-inspired looks have been making a comeback in the fashion world lately.
Channel Mel’s athletic style by pairing blue elastic-cuff trousers with a slinky racerback top. A pair of gray wedge trainers are a much more fashion-forward take on plain old sneakers, while an orange watch adds a nice pop of color. Also, don’t forget to pull your hair up in a messy-yet-chic high ponytail, similar to the one pictured below.

Baby Spice
The youngest member of the group, Emma embraced her moniker by dressing in sweet and youthful ensembles.
Babydoll dresses were Emma’s signature, so for this inspired look, I picked out an adorable lacy blue babydoll frock. Over-the-knee socks create a streamlined look, while Mary Jane platform pumps add a trendy touch. Accessorize with a chic ’90s-inspired choker, then add a bit of illuminator to help achieve that youthful glow. (Pigtails are optional.)

Scary Spice
Known for being confident, outgoing, and a bit loud, Mel B.‘s wardrobe matched her personality perfectly.
For a modern look inspired by Scary Spice, start by paring some trendy bronze-colored coated jeans with a strapless bustier tap. Next, add a cardigan which incorporates Mel’s signature leopard print and adds a little more coverage. Black lace-up boots give off a tough girl vibe, while a gold coiled ring is reminiscent of Mel B.’s totally rad “horned” hairstyle.

Posh Spice
Before she was Mrs. Beckham, Victoria was showcasing her superb fashion sense as a member of the Spice Girls. Posh kept things simple and classy in short dark-colored dresses and strappy heels, which created a timeless look.
Snag VB’s style with this LBD that features a feminine lace bustier for contrast. Next, accessorize with a pair of chic sandals and glam stud earrings. Paint your nails with a moody shade of polish, then recreate Victoria’s sleek, pin-straight ‘do with the help of some hair product.
