Celebrity Travel Style: 3 Star-Inspired Airport Outfits

Is it just me, or has travel season kicked into high gear in the last two weeks? Not only did I just make the (long) journey to Europe a few days ago, but a score of my friends have been packing and flying off to their summer destinations, as well.
Airport style–make that celeb airport style–always particularly catches my attention, because it can be difficult to look (and feel) put together when you are stuck on a plane for ten hours! The most important element of travel style is comfort, but this week’s celebs (Leighton Meester, Diane Kruger, and Emily Blunt) show us that you can look cute while traveling, too!
Below, I have chosen three of my favorite celebrity travel outfits from recent months, and will show you how to achieve three similar looks. The best part is that all three looks incorporate a basic white t-shirt, so you can interchange the same shirt for different outfits! And even if you won’t be doing any traveling this summer, these outfits are still great for the days you want to feel cozy but not look like a slob.
Look 1: Leighton Meester’s Jeggings and Denim Shirt Combo
First, let’s start with Leighton Meester. She was recently spotted boarding a plane in Paris, sporting some of this season’s top trends: a loose-fitting chambray shirt, gladiator sandals, jeggings, and a straw fedora. Leighton’s overall look is relaxed and comfortable but still very downtown-chic.

Products: Jeggings- Piperlime, Shirt- Calypso Celle, Scarf- ModCloth, Shirt- WalMart, Shoes- Forever 21, Bag- Asos, Hat-Nordstrom, Sunglasses- Blue and Cream
To rock this look yourself, I recommend trying jeggings– you might just get addicted. I’ve found some gray ones that are similar to Leighton’s, but perhaps more summery because they are a lighter shade of gray. Accessorize with a light, fun printed scarf, a straw fedora, Ray Ban Wayfarers, and some easy sandals. I chose these gladiators because they have a zipper in the back, so taking your shoes off at airport security won’t be a hassle! Finally, I love this quilted travel bag because it looks chic (and dare I say Chanel-esque?) and is just the right size to bring with you on the plane.
Look 2: Diane Kruger’s Loose Shorts and Structured Blazer
Next up is Diane Kruger, taking airport chic to a new level in jean shorts with suspenders, a black blazer, straw fedora, and flip flops.
Diane is one of my favorite stars to look to for fashion inspiration: she always looks effortless and fashion-forward! In the photo above, she looks perfectly put-together, yet her shorts are loose and long enough to comfortably squirm around in an airplane seat, and her blazer, which adds structure to the look, can keep her warm on the plane, as they tend to be chilly.

Products: Blazer- Nordstrom, Shirt- Reiss, Shorts- Abercrombie & Fitch, Shoes- Abercrombie & Fitch, Hat- Ron Herman, Sunglasses- Urban Outfitters, Bag- Yes Style
While I love Diane’s overall look above, I am not a huge fan of suspenders. So instead of using shorts with suspenders, I chose these Abercombie & Fitch boyfriend shorts, which are perfectly long and loose-fitting. If you are traveling somewhere warm and sunny, you can use the shorts in the rest of your vacation wardrobe, as well! I also like that they are a bit torn up; I think it makes for a cool contrast with the black blazer, and keeps your outfit looking youthful and vacation-ready.
The light-colored straw fedora is simple, chic and versatile–it’s perfect for keeping the sun out of your eyes while on vacation (or just hiding from the paparazzi). The leather flip flops are chicer than your average rubber options, and the metallic gold color straps match the chain link details on the gorgeous quilted shoulder bag. Finally, I chose cat-eye sunglasses to complete the look, because they keep the ensemble classic and fresh. As a bonus, they are a huge trend right now.
Look 3: Emily’s Comfy Boyfriend Jeans and Cardigan Combo
Finally, we have Emily Blunt looking comfy-cute at LAX. In the photo above, she is wearing boyfriend jeans, a black cardigan over her white t-shirt, black gladiator sandals, and sunglasses. Her ensemble gives off a relaxed yet sophisticated vibe.

Products: Cardigan- Gap, Jeans- Gap, Shirt- Nordstrom, Shoes- Endless, Sunglasses- Shop Ruche, Scarf- Ron Herman, Metallic Bag- Zappos, Quilted Bag- Asos
To recreate Emily’s look, I first chose these Gap boyfriend jeans: they are loose fitting, so you can move around comfortably. Next, I chose a black cardigan, a staple piece that will protect you from the plane’s draft and act as a versatile wardrobe essential while on vacation. For a pop of color (as we discussed in last week’s celebrity style post!), I chose a light turquoise scarf to match Emily’s.
To finish off the look, I added oversized sunglasses, gladiator sandals, and then the bag… oh, the beautiful bag. This metallic Marc Jacobs travel bag is fabulous on so many levels: the size is ideal for traveling, there is an additional strap so you can wear it cross-body, and its metallic silver color goes with everything! However, it is a bit pricey, so I also included the quilted travel bag from Leighton’s look, which will have you looking equally fabulous for less cash.
What do you think?
Which celebrity travel look is your favorite? What do you like to wear when you travel? Which celeb’s travel style is closest to your own? Your feedback is always appreciated!

oh man. Just thinking about long flights bores me! I’m not afraid of flying, just not fan of being squished in business class for long periods of time. Let’s face it– if these celebs don’t OWN a plane, they are definitely flying first class. Room to stretch out, delicious foods…they *might* reconsider their wardrobe if they weren’t riding the rich life.
When I fly, I tend to focus on function AND fashion. On super long flights I have worn Lululemon yoga pants with a matching jacket and a pair of chucks or flats. On shorter flights I’m less worried about standing up and looking like a wrinkled accordian, so I pair a tunic with cute tights and flats.
For the record, I flew first class ONCE and the difference is night and day.

Laura, I think those are great outfits to wear on flights. I wouldn’t recommend any shorts though on long hauls, because the AC can be on full blast in the cabin and you’ll end up freezing. I’d probably suggest dressing a bit warmer for the weather when you’re on one of those.

i LOVE this!
i would definitly wear any of these except for the boyfriend jeans(which i would switch for shorts or leggings) and the blazer(instead i’d wear a cardi), i just dont feeel that they would be comfortable on a long flight.
thanks for the ideas! i think i’m going to wear the first outfit on my flight!

I would happily wear all of these outfits, especially #2 ( i love those shorts! ). Although, a lot of these are the same sort of idea, it would be create if you showed some outfits that differed from ‘jeans and tees’

I personally find it too cold to wear sandals and shorts in flight. I could wear sandals to get into the plane but I have to wear socks during the flight. I find boyfriend jeans to be the greatest thing to wear as not too tight yet stylish and comfy.

I think that these are great – very similar but with a few dramatic differences.
I’ve noticed recently that all the celebs seem to follow the same rule: straw fedora is a must!
And I can’t say that I disagree; I’m going to Europe at the end of August and a straw fedora is at the top of my list of things I need to buy … it’s something that is so functional and also chic; and it’s versatile! (Plus wearing it on the plane means you don’t have to pack it)
The one thing that I don’t particularly agree with is the choice of shoes … my mom works in travel so she (and by proxy, me) has a lot of experience in airports and the one thing that she ALWAYS says is to never wear open-toed shoes. While the idea of flip flops and cute gladies are oh-so appealing … they won’t seem that way when the ‘Smith’ family’s ten-year-old daughter drives her wheely suitcase over your manicured toes.
That’s all in my experience … so in August I think I’ll channel Leighton Meester’s look, but switch up the sandals for my supa comfy (closed toe) TOMS.

GREAT POST!! I’m traveling by flight the next 3 weekends in a row–how appropriate that you’ve suggested 3 different adorable outfits!!

I like all the outfits you chose but i think that Emily Blunt is wearing skinny jeans not boyfriend jeans. you only thought that because they are rolled up and slightly torn

Great post! I find that leggings are also a great and comfy option for long flights! I love the fedoras, and a scarf is perfect to keep you warm :] Fantastic article!

i like leighton’s oufit but i’m not really a hat or jegging person.
i can’t wait for winter to be over in australia so i can stop wearing jeans (:
Yvonne
Thanks for the great outfit ideas! Going on a trip to Costa Rica next month and I’ll pretty much be sporting look #2 without the blazer; going with a nice and comfy open front cardigan instead!

Speaking as someone who is a hat addict and has regularly worn fedoras for years, it is a pain in the neck to wear a hat when flying.
Think about it, you’re sitting in coach, and it’s a packed flight. You may or may not have your bags stowed underneath the seat in front of you. You want to tip your head back to sleep but your hat is in the way.
If you take it off, where do you put it? On the ground, where in your sleep your feet might stretch out and crush it? On your lap where invariably it slides onto the ground? No way would you put it in the overhead compartment.
Linen and straw hats crush easily, so it’s not so wise to just toss them anywhere. I love wearing hats, but traveling with them is a nightmare. It makes me want to invest in a little LV hat box (if they still make them).

Those outfits are really cute, but one style… Victoria Beckham travels in crazy feminine style, for instance… Would’ve loved to see three different styles, not looks. Maybe I’ll make that post myself one day :)
Shannon
I agree with Milana. The outfits shown are all one style. While they’re cute, they look very similar. It would have been nice to see some different styles featured.

I love the ease of these looks and the cuteness too! Thanks so much for the inspiration. I would definitely choose leggings on long flights and I love the idea of boyfriend jeans for shorter flights-but I would prefer the actual boyfriend! Any ideas on how to find him? I think these cute outfits that are really in style is a start! Love your ideas!
Jennifer
As comfortable as these all look, none of these will suit my body shape, and I’ll probably end up looking pretty dumpy in them.

I’m flying back home to europe in a few days and this is what i’m wearing: high top Nike sneaks, regular straight jeans, à white and blue striped tank and à kahki green hoodie vest. Combined with à dark brownish postmanbag. Pretty basic, very comfy and it never Goes outa style!
