Celebrity Street Style of the Week: Playing with Proportions

Celebrities

As you guys know, every Sunday I feature three different celebs as my “street style picks” of the week. This week, celebs like Hilary Rhoda, Jessica Alba, and Diane Kruger were out and about in summery-chic outfits featuring some interesting proportions. Read on to see how you can get their looks!

Look 1: Hilary Rhoda’s Maxi Skirt and Cropped Top

Model Hilary Rhoda was summer-perfect this week, rocking a nautical striped maxi skirt, a cropped top, jean jacket, and best of all, a radiant glow.  Maxi skirts have been gaining popularity in the last few months, and I love how Hilary offset her long skirt with a short, cropped top and jacket. Even if you’re not totally comfortable exposing your stomach, pairing a tee or tank that has a shrunken look to it with a longer skirt will still work!

To get Hilary’s look, start with a light striped maxi skirt; this one is a comfy jersey material. While the stripes in this skirt are larger than Hilary’s (and larger stripes tend to add nonexistent pounds to your appearance- beware!), the muted gray tones keep the skirt streamlined. Next, this cropped white tee shirt can be adjusted depending on how much stomach you want to show– pull the fabric backwards to bear your tummy, or pull it forward to keep it covered.  It’s also great because it is like a blank canvas to showcase this lovely layered pearl necklace. Finally, the easy leather sandals will work beautifully with the rest of your summer wardrobe, and the cropped jean jacket is ideal for chilly summer nights over dresses, skirts, and shorts.

Look 2: Jessica’s High-Waisted Ruffle Skirt and Tied-Up Top

Lucky Miss Jessica Alba has been spending her summer in gorgeous France, and has been spotted all over in breezy numbers like this one: a white, high-waisted ruffle skirt, a striped blue button-down shirt tied up, blue flats, and a straw fedora hat. This look is totally versatile for summer- whether you’re strolling around, running errands, or grabbing a bite to eat, day or night, you will look sweet and classic.

Most stores don’t seem to have the white ruffle skirt- a summer staple- in a high-waisted style, but I have found that by buying skirts meant to be worn on your hips a size smaller, you can hoist them up and get the same look (provided they are long enough to begin with). Of course, it depends on your body type, as well; this Gap skirt is fun and youthful with its many layers of ruffles, and even if you wear it on your hips as opposed to your waist, you are still playing with proportions if you tie up your blue button-down shirt.

I especially love the accessories that go with this outfit– this fedora is a bit unexpected because of its open-weave design and light stripe.  The sunglasses combine all of my favorite sunglasses trends: a large, round tortoise frame, with a Wayfarer-esque edge. The bag is a pretty, natural brown with a structured shape, and best of all, it features a mirror on the flap! Finally, simple blue flats pull the look together, although sandals would work, too.

Look 3: Diane’s High-Waisted Pleated Pants and Minimalist Extras

Diane Kruger looked chic as usual on a date night in a basic black tube top, black flats, a simple black belt, and high-waisted pleated pants. Her minimalist accessories and streamlined tube top highlight the shape of the pants, and create a very figure-flattering silhouette. Wear this look as she does for a night out, or add sunglasses and a straw fedora for daytime.

American Apparel’s linen pleated pants are a dead-ringer for Diane’s, and while they seem like a bit of a fashion risk, they actually work with many different tops: with a body-con tube top as shown in the picture above, with a blazer, or for a collegiate look, a button-down sweater. The black ballet flats are a college girl essential and general wardrobe staple, while finally the cross-body bag is the cutest shape!

    Go Maryland!!!

I’ve always thought that proportions were extremely important in clothing, as it can make any outfit look put-together.

Great tip on “buying skirts meant to be worn on your hips a size smaller”. I’ve done this for a couple of skirts I have in my closet now. It really does do the trick (but not always) when a high waisted look is desired.

I love all of these looks…especially Diane’s! Playing with proportions is probably one of my favorite ways to style an outfit. I’ve been absolutely obsessed with high waisted shorts this summer and depending on whether they’re tight or loose, I choose an opposite fitting top to balance the proportions.

I actually prefer the “inspired by” looks more than the actual celebrity outfits. Well done!
