Celebrity Street Style: Gwyneth, Kylie, and Emmy’s Shopping Attire

As the fall semester approaches, I have started to get into back-to-school shopping mode! I’ve been buying dorm goods, school supplies, and most importantly, new clothes– and to me, this may be the only good thing about summer coming to an end.

This past week, celebs have been spotted doing some shopping of their own, and looking quite cute while doing so! I was especially inspired by Gwyneth Paltrow, Kylie Jenner, and Emmy Rossum‘s shopping attire this week. If you’d like to achieve their cute shopping looks yourself, read on!

Look 1: Gwyneth Paltrow’s Harem Pants and Loose Tank

Okay, so this isn’t entirely a shopping look: Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted this week in NYC not shopping, but lunching. Nonetheless, I am in love with her whole look– it’s perfect for a full day around town, running errands, meeting friends, and of course, shopping.

Gwyneth’s silky black drawstring harem pants are too perfect; I myself have been searching for the perfect pair. I’m not a huge fan of the kind with the severely baggy area between the legs, so I really like the fit of Gwyneth’s pair. She paired her gorgeous pants with a flowy and slightly oversized white tank, a fun way to play with proportions. She then finished the look off with some brown leather zip-up sandals, a silver feather pendant necklace, black sunglasses, and a totally-lustworthy Goyard bag.

To recreate Gwyneth’s look, I started with the pants: These black harem pants are very similar to Gwyneth’s pair, and can be dressed up or down. While they look awesome paired with casual pieces as seen here, they would also look incredible with heels and a blazer for dressier functions. The white tank I chose has the same loose, flowy effect as Gwyneth’s, while the feather necklace and angular black sunglasses give the look extra flair. The brown sandals have that slightly-tribal look, and the color of the leather is almost the same as the color of Gwyneth’s sandals above! Also, the metal running down the front is an ode to the zippers on hers.

As for the bag, I wanted to chose one which would have that pop of bright blue like Gwyneth’s and keep the shape of a large shoulder bag (since those are ideal for shopping!). We may not all be able to afford a pricey designer bag like Gwyneth’s Goyard, but I think this Marc Jacobs bag is an incredible substitute. It even has a black stripe and black lettering to match the pants, and since it’s made of canvas, it can be used as a beach bag during the summer months. Its ridiculously low price, however, is the icing on the cake.

Look 2: Kylie Jenner’s Ripped Shorts and Combat Boot Heels

The youngest members of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, Kylie and Kendall Jenner have only recently been getting paparazzi attention. I don’t usually see photos of them when browsing the celebrity blogs, but when I came across these photos of the sisters doing some back-to-school shopping, I was so impressed with Kylie’s look!  She paired a striped tank top with some slightly high-waisted shredded jean shorts, and best of all, she added some heeled lace-up combat boots!

Lace-up combat boots have been one of my most sought-after items on my back-to-school shopping list, and I love that Kylie’s are heeled– a cross between girly and grunge.

Look Inspired by Kylie:

I was so happy to find these inexpensive lace-up boots that are almost identical to Kylie’s; I can’t wait to wear them with tights and flowy dresses when it gets colder, too. The ripped-up jean shorts from Urban Outfitters feature a higher waistline like Kylie’s pair, which give them a vintage feel. Be sure to tuck the striped tank top in the shorts to show off your waistline!

As for accessories, don’t be afraid to pile them on– the two most distinct necklaces Kylie is wearing are a round circular gold pendant, and a thinner gold chain with pearlescent beads, which I recreated here.

Look 3: Emmy Rossum’s Sweet Dress and Tough Boots

Emmy’s outfit may seem really simple, but that’s part of the beauty of it– she looks trendy without being overdone or fussy, which makes this outfit great for running around town. Above, she is wearing a printed silk dress, which she paired with some black mid-calf biker boots and cool sunglasses. I like the juxtaposition of the soft, girly dress against the toughness of the boots; the boots also make this a great transitional look for the changing seasons.

This floral sateen dress has the same sheen as Emmy’s, and also features the same cinched waistline, making it ultra-flattering. The biker boots create an awesome contrast against the dress (not to mention they will look great with so many other pieces in your wardrobe, like leggings and skinny jeans come fall), and complement the adorable studded bucket bag. The sunglasses, tortoise frames like Emmy’s, are a bit more angular than hers, but still create the same aesthetic. My favorite thing about this look? How easy it is to put together!

What do you think?

Which look is your favorite? What do you tend to wear when shopping or running errands around town? Drop me a comment!

Not a big fan of harem pants ever, but I love the way you put this article together. Very well written and I love a lot of the pieces you incorporated. I love the boots in the last look, much more than I like the ones Emmy is wearing. Great job!

The boots you chose are awesome! I just bought both pairs and am excited to wear them with jean shorts. I really like all the looks and especially your ideas. Thanks for the inspiration!

Not a fan of the harem pants either. They’re best when at home.

Hah thanks! I am now wearing the first outfit (I’ve had a problem thinking of things to wear to my black harem pants)! Now all that’s lacking is a pair of black sunglasses and boots to wear the other outfits as well.

Not a fan of harem pants personally, but I’m sure some people can pull them off. And I agree with aish, I like the outfit you put together “inspired” by Kylie, but I don’t think it looks very good on her. Maybe it’s the proportions or something? And I looove the Emmy Rossum-inspired look, esp. the boots!!!

I don’t like the look that girls like Kylie Jenner is promoting… once a celebrity does it, it gets a trendy name, and then everybody that wears the same thing AFTER the celebrity is now trendy. Courtney Love did the same thing during that alt/grunge era, so ladies should take a hint… fashion history repeats itself too!

On a positive note, I’m warming up to harem pants, just the more modern looking ones. I definitely don’t want to look like an extra from “Aladdin” or an MC Hammer video.

I wasn’t a big fan of the harem pants, but I agree they look much much better when they are more fitted in the crotch area.

As for the other two outfits, I’m sorry but they are very dated. IMO ripped jean shorts will never be fashion-forward and the girly dress with combat boots has been done. Have we come full circle back to the 90s already?

To the previous commenter, Lynn: If you know anything about fashion, you would know that most trends are recycled and this season is embracing the grunge look. We don’t have to like them or replicate them, it’s just a fact. This article is about celebrity street style and the celebrity looks are just that, celebrity looks that may appeal to some and not to others. We should embrace everyone’s style and respect their individual choices.

Irene: Lynn has already acknowledged that she knows something about fashion- if she didn’t, she wouldn’t know that grunge was 90s! All I think she’s saying is that it’s a little bit early to be replaying the 90s already- do you want to go back to you hip hugger flare jeans and platform Sketchers just yet? Probably not, but just give it another decade, huh? Respect HER individual choice that she obviously doesn’t like the looks presented as opposed to trying to school her.

I am actually a fan of the “grunge” look and I am pretty offended by some of the comments here. Just because YOU don’t like my look or the countless other girls who like it as well– like Kylie Jenner or Taylor Momsen– doesn’t mean you have to knock it.

To the author– thanks for including this look. I have been reading these celeb style posts and it’s really great to see that you include different types of looks and styles. Not everyone has the same taste, and with celebrities, we often don’t see a huge variation in their styles, so I am so happy you went with a look which is out of the box, for girls like me! :)

and btw, monique: it seems to me that irene wasn’t trying to “school” anyone, she was saying we should EMBRACE and RESPECT everyone’s style.

Nowhere in my previous post did I say that I didn’t like the grunge look because I do! However I did say that it is dated as opposed to being fashion forward. Fashion forward means taking the trend in a NEW direction, not merely rehashing was has been done before. I am aware that trends are “recycled” but they are brought back and updated. I would love to see a more modern grunge look to come back. The comfort mixed with edgy was definitely an interesting trend, however I am also currently loving the “Mad Men” inspired fashions as well.

Lynn- Sorry for putting words in your mouth/post!

I agree though- a grunge that doesn’t remind you of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” would be nice. Rossum’s look has definitely been done before, and is still being done by girls who consistently rock girly grunge as their personal style. Preppy grunge, urban grunge? Who knows.

Jenner, (as DeeAnn mentioned) Momsen, and my personal “favorite” Ke$ha make grunge look dated AND like trash. They lack taste. Individual style loses its stylishness when you jeopardize taste.

Harem pants are a tricky species. I have had people tell me how good they look on me, but I only own one pair. The key I think is to make sure the fit is spot on. I know that might sound impossible for a pair of baggy pants, but the fit around the waist and backside is so important.

Love the street style and people who know how to rock it! Gwyneth Paltrow’s outfits is my favorite!
