Hautelinks: Week of 7/8/10

It’s another super long Hautelinks list this week. Hope you’re ready to kill some time!
You Were Doing It Wrong is a fantastic Ask MetaFilter thread where people are discussing the many things they recently realized they were “doing wrong all along.” Bet you’ll find something in there you didn’t already know! (Bonus: there’s lots of spelling and grammar discussion for you writing snobs.)
Ha! Lady Gaga’s Most Crazily Dressed Fans is great. In the words of Gaga herself, “I am speechless.”
As if we weren’t obsessed enough with Gossip Girl to begin with, an appearance by Mr. Chanel himself might just put us over the top.
In case you hadn’t heard, a judge sentenced Lindsay Lohan to 90 days in jail. Personally, I can’t help but think it’s a good thing – maybe it’ll finally give her a chance to get sober?
Not sure what to think of this: Plus-sized model Crystal Renn is rapidly losing weight. On one hand, good for her if she was trying to get healthier. On the other hand, it’s sad that we’re losing such an icon in the world of plus-sized models.
Just what you always wanted: Camelfague panties “smooth out your feminine parts.” Um, I wish this was a joke.
7 Classic Disney Movies Based on R-Rated Stories. Yikes, who knew?!

I kinda want everything from Teen Vogue’s list of Summer Staples…
J. Crew’s Fall 2010 Collection is totally drool-worthy. Is it just me or have they been really on-point with their looks lately? The whole collection is fab.
On the opposite end of the fashion spectrum, “Awesomely bad without the awesome” is pretty much the only way to describe JWOWW (of Jersey Shore fame)’s new clothing line, Filthy Couture….
Study says women spend $25,000 on shoes in a lifetime. Is it sad that this doesn’t surprise me at all?
InStyle shows you how to find your most flattering sunglasses.
Tips for Dealing with Rejection from someone who knows all about it: an actor. Rejection is something we will all face at one point or another, and the tips on getting past it while learning from it are spot-on. Also, the “Lemonade File” idea is just genius!

BellaSugar has a ton of great tutorials on braiding your hair in different ways. If you have some free time on your hands, they’re worth trying out!
Also from BellaSugar, The Wild History of Lipstick. This comes with a warning, however: apparently 1/3 of modern lipsticks are formulated with LEAD, and the worst part is that the companies deny they’re using more than is legal. So please be careful!
Um, can I get these people to come to my apartment every morning?
MakeupandBeautyBlog reviews Topshop’s limited-edition polishes. Apparently, they may look pretty, but there’s a bit of an issue with the shade “Cloud.”

In other makeup news, Alice + Olivia are collaborating with MAC. Yes, please!
Do you guys remember Dove’s “Real Beauty” campaign? (Hint: you’ve seen the ads, featuring half-naked ladies in their basic underwear, all over the place.) Apparently, the people at Dove have a limited view of what “real beauty” actually is… Such a bummer.
Kendie’s 30 for 30 Challenge is an awesome idea! Basically, the goal was to create 30 outfits out of 30 items, in 30 days. The results are really inspiring. Do you think you could take a similar challenge?
From Anderson Cooper’s blog, 28 things I wish I’d known before I started traveling. It’s a must-read!
FaveOne is awesome if you need to waste time doing something mindless. It’s simple: just click the picture of the thing you like more… Strawberries or Bananas?, Bacon or Kevin Bacon?, Burritos or Quesadillas? These questions need to be answered.
Refinery 29 shows us a new take on your birthstone: apparently, it has special powers. Even if you don’t believe the whole “powers” idea, the jewelry suggestions are pretty.
Sneak peek alert! This video gives us a preview of the wardrobe for the upcoming season of Mad Men. Apparently, it’s going to be “less glitzy” and more indicative of the period the drama is set in; this time, it’ll reflect 1960s culture and ideals.
Still don’t understand why we’re talking about fall fashion now, and why swimsuits are currently on sale? Stylelist makes sense of the madness.
Kind of interesting: Beyonce’s sister Solange declined to be involved with the House of Dereon line.
Okay, this is just cool: get a free smartphone when you try on a pair of jeans at American Eagle! We are not making this up.
In case you want to get something for your boyfriend: Short-O-Matic is a cool site that allows you to create board shorts using your own artwork. The shorts are hand-sewn, cut and printed in California, and a portion of the proceeds from each purchase is donated to Global Green USA. Very cool!

I TOTALLY knew all the disney ones, I always complain about disney doing stuff like that. Especially the Hunchback- yikes, that’s freaky. The description of the two skeletons curled around each other is a great way to end a book!
Tasha
Crystal Renn was never unhealthy, some people are just made a bit bigger than others. Plus size modelling usually involves being a US 8/10…definitely not what I would classify as an unhealthy weight?
On a lighter note…that Disney thing has made me view the films in a totally different way!
Zephyr - CF Editor
Luinae – Really? I had no idea about the Disney stuff before I saw that post. I guess “blissfully unaware” would be the right description, haha!
Tasha – I definitely didn’t say she wasn’t healthy; my comment was in regards to the fact that we don’t know why she lost all that weight, so I speculated, optimistically, that perhaps she was trying to be healthier and that’s the reason for her weight loss? Often times, weight loss can result from a switch to a healthier lifestyle (eating more fruits and veggies, moving more), so my comment meant that I’m hoping that’s why she lost the weight, not because she felt pressured or is sick. I definitely didn’t mean to insinuate that she wasn’t healthy to begin with. Sorry if it came off that way.

I loved all these links. Thank you!
Kate
THANKS! I love hautelinks! ;)

About the You Were Doing it Wrong site….
I HAD NO IDEA NARWHALS WERE REAL EITHER!
I feel really stupid, but also excited because I thought they were mythical creatures. WOW. :D
Lauren
There were a lot of links but they weren’t very fascinating :/ You guys usually have more exciting things to read where I can spend a hour or two looking at but these were boring.
Sarah
Crystal Renn is already healthy- she is very athletic and and avid hiker. When she was a “regular” size model (size 0 or 00) she was anorexic. So, if she’s rapidly losing weight, it’s probably not in a bid to “get healthy”, which is really just a thinly veiled euphemism for getting down to what people think is an acceptable weight. Her publicist has already refuted the story, by the way.
Milana
Fun links!
Thanks!

Lauren – That’s too bad. I personally spent a few hours browsing a few of the sites, but I understand if they weren’t for you. Hopefully next week’s list will be more your taste :)
Sarah – Good to know! I really don’t know much at all about her, aside from the fact that she’s one of the most gorgeous plus-sized models out there. I had no idea she was a hiker and all of that. And I hadn’t heard about her publicist’s comments either. To reiterate: in my case, my comment was absolutely not a thinly-veiled attempt to say that her size was unhealthy, although I do agree that the phrase is often used in that way. I just didn’t know much about her, so I speculated hoping her weight loss could be explained by something positive instead of negative. No hate or judgment was intended in any way at all.
