Hautelinks - your weekly source for the best of the web

Just like last week, we’ve got another epically long Hautelinks list for you this week. There was so much great stuff out there this week, so you know we had to link it all up! However, we’d like to apologize in advance to your boss for how little you’re going to get done as a result of this massive list. Our bad.

* We’re pretty obsessed with the Louis Vuitton FW 2010/11 ad campaign, featuring three generations of super models!

* My Organizational Wishlist, from Already Pretty, is pretty much eye candy for any Virgo or otherwise neat person with a closet full of clothes. I’m seriously considering buying the entire list.

* Geek Sugar shows us a bunch of good reasons NOT to stash your laptop in the trunk on those summer roadtrips!

* If you’re already a fan of Alexa Chung’s cute, quirky style, you will LOVE this preview of her forthcoming collection, courtesy of Lucky Mag!

* Under the Chanel Shopping Spell is pretty much the best thing ever. Amazing models, all covered in Chanel, surrounded by Chanel… in a video about Chanel. Yes, please!

* In case you haven’t heard, Courtney Love (yes, that Courtney Love) has started a fashion blog, and Fashionista has already come up with 5 reasons they can’t stand it.

* Also from Fashionista, Fierce, Style Icon, Chic… and Other Fashion Words We’re Sick Of. Ironically, I think the worst one is “fashionista.” Actually, make that anything with an “ista” at the end. Cringe.

* French Phrases that Have No English Equivalent. As a bit of a francophile, I frankly (ha) love this.

* Really?! “Anything over size 10 is ‘plus size’,” says Forever 21.

* This had me cracking up: Rachel Zoe Battles the Zoeinator!

* SO cool: a “marble nails” tutorial that will make your tips look totally unique. Definitely gonna try it out this weekend!

* A new test can supposedly predict whether or not your relationship will last. So weird!

* Could you be addicted to Facebook? According to a new study, it’s pretty common.

* Good tips for those of you in summer classes or working crazy hours this summer: How to Avoid Burning Out, from TresSugar.

* LipSmackers + Vitamin Water = a new beauty collaboration. Sounds good!

* Tired of blow drying your hair every morning? Get gorgeous as soon as you step out of the shower (or ocean) with Allure’s 3 cute ways to style wet hair.

* Everyone’s favorite blogging prodigy, Tavi, wrote an open letter to Seventeen Magazine about their stance on body image and appearances that’s frankly awesome. While we love Seventeen, it’s hard not to be Team Tavi on this one.

* Vaseline’s new skin-lightening Indian Facebook application is causing a public outrage, and is prompting lots of interesting discussion about ridiculous “beauty” standards, and how cosmetics companies are profiting. The comments section of the post linked is worth reading, as well.

* Bet my ‘rents are psyched this didn’t exist when I was young: Bill My Parents is a new service that makes it super easy for kids to shop online. Am I right in thinking nothing good can come of this?

* The Nike (RED) Tied Together Video is so cool: it’s a 120 hour relay race in NYC, London, Milan, Berlin, and Paris to raise awareness about Nike’s partnership with (RED) to fight HIV and AIDS.

* In other news, John Mayer’s video mocking Lebron James‘ announcement that he’s playing for Miami is hilarious.

* The Hills may be over (admit it, you’ll miss it!), but NY Mag helps us reminisce with a hilarious look back at all our favorite characters, as well as predictions for where they’ll end up in the future!

* Hills-related: the show’s comic relief, Lo Bosworth, just launched her own super-cute lifestyle bog, The Lo Down, where she dishes advice on everything from boys to beauty, and even talks about her experiences on the show! It’s surprisingly well-written and insightful. Go, Lo!

* French department store Galeries Lafayette is aiming to hold a Guiness World Record-breaking catwalk show. C’est magnifique!

* Having a tough time sorting through all the new beauty products this season? WhoWhatWear has your cheat sheet.

* TopShop’s Autumn Winter ’10 Shoot video is getting me SO excited for fall fashion! Topshop kills it, as always.

* Money Magazine lists The US’ Best Places to Live 2010. Did your city make the cut?

* Preparing for College: Tech Essentials for Your First Year, from Lifehacker, is a helpful list for both incoming freshman and seasoned upperclassmen that isn’t overly tech lingo-y.

* Got tickets to a music festival? Elle will show you what to do with your hair.

* Au coin de ma rue is a great little street style blog we just discovered featuring looks from Europe – it’s mostly Dutch, but there are also some shots from Belgium, France, and other countries as well!

* I heart the love story between Coco Chanel and the Duke of Westminster. Who knew?

* So cute! Couture Week’s hottest accessory is practical, adorable, AND costs $3 or less.

* BeautyBloggingJunkie reviews the ubiquitous J Brand Houlihan Skinny Cargos, and tells you where to snag a pair.

* HotBeautyHealth shows you how to fix a smudged nail in seconds.

* Fabsugar gives us 15 “surf-tastic” pieces to help you ride the waves this summer.

* When it comes to style, are you a good girl or a bad girl? Refinery29 will help you decide.

* Hair Hats is a unique project by Japanese artist Nagi Noda, which went on to inspire one of Lady Gaga’s crazy “Elephant Hair.” It’s always fun to see where public figures like Gaga get their inspiration from.

* Kinsey Michaels makes a $16 dress look like it cost a whole lot more!

* Emma Roberts’ hairstylist gives us tips on how to achieve her gorgeous looks. Very cute!

* The History of Chanel No. 5 chronicles the lifetime of the world’s most iconic perfume.

* Finally, just a heads up. If you’re a tech and fashion fan… you should follow @thetonywang on Twitter. He’s working with Google on a new fashion initiative that’s super exciting and game-changing. I can’t tell you guys much more than that yet, but more details are on the way…. get excited!

    Hi Zephyr,
One of my favorite postings throughout the entire week is the Hautelinks! I just wanted to commend you for gathering all of these fascinating links for us readers.
I’m not asking you to stop posting her posts or anything, but Tavi seems precocious and quite frankly, annoying. Seventeen magazine wasn’t particularly trying to point out what “ugly” or “fat” meant. It was meant to raise awareness about the negative effects of marijuana. Was that truly wrong, to try and stop teenage girls from using it?
And here’s something that I never see criticized- Teen Vogue is constantly featuring models who are extremely skinny and yet they continue their parading of posts about anorexia and bulimia. It’s a complete contradiction. At the very least, Seventeen shows girls you see on the street, not someone who you could only come across in Hollywood or New York.

Great list, as always! However…am I the only one who doesn’t particularly care for Tavi’s blog? While I agree that Seventeen’s title for that story might not have been the best one, I often feel her blog is full of sensationalism rather than insightful journalism. She writes as if your average Seventeen reader is nothing more than a beauty obsessed bimbo, and even worse, she suggests that Seventeen should be the one to transform her. A quote from her blog:
“She writes, “Whenever I’m feeling down, I can just look at my nails and feel peppy!” This is bleak. I wish Seventeen would suggest a hobby for Danielle so she didn’t have to look to idle nail-gazing as her only source of joy.” -Tavi

I highly doubt her nails are Danielle’s only source of joy…and if it is, a magazine surely shouldn’t be responsible for providing her with one.

honestly, why is Tavi even speaking at all? what on earth does a 14 year old know? all she does is get money from her rich daddy and take silly NOT stylish pictures. yes it needed to be said but NOT by her. And no, not every seventeen year old is like that, I know I wasn’t. In my opinion, get your period before you start trying to solve world hunger, cause here’s a memo: you’re just as shallow as Christina mentioned!

Just a thought… Why did Tavi attack Seventeen – when they use plus-size teens throughout their magazine, promote healthy eating and exercise instead of crash dieting, have that Body Peace pledge, AND have a monthly column about accepting yourself as you are?!

American Apparel would’ve been a much better target, considering they often refuse to carry items in a “large” and have a long history of only hiring pretty and thin people.

It appears Tavi didn’t really think this out…

So I tried the marbled nails thing and… it didn’t work! The top of the water kept forming a film on it and all the colors overpower eachother.
Thought when I used Orly products it worked a little better, because it’s thicker. But it still blended a LOT.
I don’t suggest doing it, it can get really messy!

Regarding the Vaseline Skin-Lightening cream and Facebook application in India: Why does this remain more shocking than white girls who religiously apply tanning lotions to falsely darken their skin, according to a now century-old cultural association of tan with health and greater beauty? I do not understand why intentionally altering ANY skin color is not a shocking denial of self and individuality. Skin color has little to do with health, unlike weight, and is more indicative of individual heritage than something like hair color (unless you’re hair is a more unusual color, like red).

the marble nails thing works but you have to work really fast or the water will form a film. i suggest putting vaseline on the skin part as it makes it a lot easier to clean off the nail polish.
