Hautelinks - your weekly source for the best of the web

* How long could you live without modern media, Facebook, computers, and cell phones? You might have to find out. Professors across the country are assigning “media fasts” to students in an attempt to counteract our universal obsession with technology. Personally, I think I would bomb the assignment… what about you?

* Designers remember Alexander McQueen on his 41st birthday. It’s still so hard to believe he’s gone.

* Ooh, the MAC and Liberty of London collaboration looks gorgeous. And the ads are so pretty and inspiring! Might have to pick up a makeup bag or two…

* Designers are finally starting to “get” the whole new media / technology thing. Case and point? Roberto Cavalli has a blog! Let’s hope more of his fellow designers follow suit.

* Okay, I know many of you hate this trend, but it’s hard to deny that clog mania is upon us this season…

* If you’re loving the denim on denim trend, you MUST try this DIY from WhoWhatWear and report back to us! So cute and fun for spring. (For more, see the P.S. – I made this… finished product!)

* On the denim theme, if you want some new ways to wear your jeans, this article will definitely give you ideas!

* Start your day with a delicious cup of… Karl Lagerfeld?

* My 10 year old self shrieked at this news: Titanic will be re-relased in 3D in 2012! Are you psyched?

* Remember those cool sneakers we all had in elementary school that lit up when you walked around? Well now, for only $2,500 (ha), you can own the grown-up, high-heeled version, courtesy of Jimmy Choo. Kinda amazing in a totally excessive, unnecessary way.

* Yay, yay, yay: Karl Lagerfeld says the fur at his latest Chanel show was fake!

* The future of magazine advertising? Although I don’t want to shell out for an iPad, this looks really, really cool.

* Styleite’s Power Grid ranks the top 1500 most influential people in fashion.

* They’re not only hideous (and ubiquitous), but they could actually be bad for you! That’s right, Uggs could hurt your health. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

* If you’ve never been to the launch of a designer line for H&M, this video will keep you away for good. Total insanity!

* Wow, the jean business is hardcore.

* Gems from Karl – a few …interesting quotes that could only have come from Mr. Lagerfeld.

* By now you’ve probably heard that model Rie Rasmussen called out photographer Terry Richardson on his sexually-charged photos. Then one of Richardson’s former subjects accused him of exploiting her when she was 19. Now, key figures in the industry are defending him and raising questions about boundaries in fashion. What are your thoughts on all of this?

* Forever 21′s Secret Garden lookbook is SO pretty, springy, and inspiring!

* This is interesting: Are student services cheaper and better? Could be a good way to save money and support fellow students in the process. (Thanks to Karen for the tip!)

* 100 Awesome Posts on Dorm Room Design is a good roundup if you’re looking to makeover your space. Although we’re a little biased because CF is featured…

* Another lookbook that’s a must-see: H&M’s new Garden Collection (which launches on March 25th) is just gorgeous. And the pieces are so well-priced. Will you be picking any of them up?

* This video of a cool new “interactive” t-shirt for kids makes me wish I was 6 again. Looks so fun!

The Rie Rasmussen thing is interesting because I’ve heard from a lot of people who are working to become up-and-coming models, and apparently it’s a nasty business. Some people get lucky and make it big time without any real trouble, but there are a lot of girls who are forced to perform sexual favors or be subjected to sexual abuse to/by their photographers in order to be hired for jobs, and they do it out of desperation. Generally it seems that it’s a lot more professional the higher up you get, so I’m surprised that that happened. Boundaries are definitely necessary, in my opinion, and a professional demeanor must be maintained at all times – even when the photographer needs to position the model in some sexually appealing way, it’s possible to do so professionally.
