Hautelinks: Week of 12/2/10

Hautelinks - your weekly source for the best of the web

We’re baa-aack! After taking last week off for Thanksgiving, Hautelinks has returned, and this week we’ve got a nice long list of distractions to get you through the next few hours of “studying” at the lib. Enjoy!

* Trying to save your pennies this winter? Check out these budget shopping tips Rebecca Bloomwood would love!

* An oldie but goodie: Tips for landing a PR internship, from our friends at PR Couture. Really, all interns, PR or not, could benefit from their advice.

* 25 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Turned 25, from Lemondrop. At 23, I already know all of these – does that make me ahead of the curve?

* Haha, so funny: Refinery 29 will teach you how to become a star style blogger, in just a few easy steps.

* If you love the style from Almost Famous and covet Rachel Zoe’s wardrobe, you need to check out this 70s-style fashion editorial, featuring Raquel Zimmermann. So inspiring!

* Knight Cat has a preview of Alexander Wang’s spring 2011 bag collection. Yum.

* Nicki Minaj just got her own special edition MAC lipstick. The name? Pink Friday, of course!

* Curious as to how Nicki’s shade looks in person? Temptalia did an in-depth review of the lipstick, complete with comparisons to other MAC shades.

* The New York Times did a profile on everyone’s favorite Brit style icon, Ms. Alexa Chung, where she talks fashion, beauty, and taking over America.

* And OK, even though I like Alexa, I LOL-ed at this piece from The Gloss: Why Alexa Chung Bothers Me.

* Interesting product, questionable name.

* InStyle UK lists their picks for the world’s most stylish celebrity couples. Did your favorite duo make the cut?

* Somewhat related to beautiful celebrity couples, but really just plain weird: Are attractive couples more likely to have daughters?

* Not about to break out a Christmas sweater but still want to add some Holiday spirit to your ensembles? Here are 10 Subtle Ways to Add Holiday Cheer to Your Look.

* Did you watch the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show this week? Notice any new faces? Modelinia introduces you to the fresh faces on the 2010 VS runway.

* Channel your favorite VS Model’s look with this tutorial on getting Victoria’s Secret bombshell hair.

* Random but interesting: StyleList explains the makeup look that men notice first.

* Magazine “Holiday Gift Guides” are always good jumping-off points if you’re cursed with a case of gifter’s block. A few of our faves so far: Harper’s Bazaar’s guide for women, and ELLE’s Holiday Gift Guide.

* I also loved this: Gifts for Your Beautiful Mom Who Gives Pitch-Perfect Advice and Has a Secret Crush on Niles from Frasier.

* Oh, and Design*Sponge did two great gift guides, too: for presents under $25, and under $50!

* CF writer Crystal is also interning at Seventeen, and recently wrote a fantastic piece on feeling comfortable in your own skin. It’s totally a must-read. Great job, Crystal!

* Parade did an interesting piece on how to be happy in your city, and they also listed the number one happiest city in America… San Luis Obispo (It’s in California. I had never heard of it either.)

* 20 Reasons The ’90s Rocked, from The Frisky… as if we needed more proof it was the best decade ever.

* Still not BFF with everyone’s favorite online shopping mecca? Already Pretty has an amazingly in-depth guide to the ins and outs of shopping on eBay.

* Are you being sucked dry by a vampire friend? And no, they don’t mean the sparkly Twilight kind.

* Oprah unveiled her list of Favorite Things last week. Curious as to which fashiony products are going to sell out everywhere soon? (Remember when she first recommended Louboutins?) FabSugar has the list here.

* When we saw R29 describe former Jersey Shore star Angelina’s new single as “the worst thing you will ever hear in your entire life,” we thought they were just being dramatic. After all, we’ve listened to Paris Hilton, and songs with lyrics like “blah blah blah think you’ll be gettin’ this nah nah nah.” (Thanks for that gem, Ke$ha.) It couldn’t possibly be THAT bad… Um, let’s just say we were wrong.

* If you’ve regained your composure after listening to that track, check out another Refinery 29 piece we loved: their list of Cute LBDs for the Holidays! Loving the sparkle-encrusted number from Forever 21!

* 5 Steps for Creating a December to Remember, from Positively Present. Love this!

* Planning a holiday party? This Christmas Candyland party theme is so fun and inspiring – I’m obsessed with the glass jars of candy!

* See also: 10 Ways to Update Your Home for the Holidays, via Belle Maison.

* I don’t know much about PSU, but I have a newfound respect for that school. Check out the random-but-awesome e-card they send to their 21-year old students on their birthdays!

* Which Degree Should You Get? is an interesting infographic about the real value of college.

* Hope you’re ready for some eye candy: ELLE’s list of surreal statement shoes will have you drooling!

* Love your PBR and 7-Eleven snack runs like any good American? You aren’t alone. Cracked lists 7 things from America that are insanely popular overseas. Who knew?

* To me, it’s not the Holiday season unless I’m trying new, wintery recipes, and these apple latkes are going right to the top of my to-make list!

* I loved this photo collage of Taylor Tomasi Hill’s outfits over the years. (It’s big: Wait for it to load!) For those of you who don’t know, she’s the Style and Accessories Director for Marie Claire, and a total fashion icon. Love her!

* Jennifer Lopez fans, listen up: She’s returning to clothing with the help of her husband and a new collection at Kohl’s, reports The Budget Fashionista. I can’t say I’m thaat excited for this, although maybe she could surprise people… What do you think?

That’s it for now! Let us know what you think with a comment, and as always, feel free to share your favorite links of the week in the comments section, too.

This might be the best Hautelinks that I’ve read yet! (maybe it’s because there is a Becky Bloomwood special…) but I loved all of the links!

“Are attractive couples more likely to have daughters?” is possibly the least scientific thing I’ve ever read. Genetic inheritance is random, not somehow engineered by the body to reflect a couple’s most positive attributes. Also, the woman’s gamete does not control what sex the child is, the male’s sperm determines the sex. I don’t see this in any way being scientifically valid.

Alexandra, you’re absolutely right about the male gamete controlling the sex, but about an year ago I read from the exact news source that richer couples have more boys. Their explanation was that girls are more resistant during the first week than boys. So a couple with a richer lifestyle has more girls. So maybe beautiful women carry girls better. I don’t know how true that is but I’m not a scientist.

I loves the haute links. I try staying fashion-informed but I always miss things. Funny
    how people interpret Alexa differently.

Hate to burst an F21-loving bubbles, but I tried on that dress and unless you have a completely straight body shape and are very tall, its really unflattering. Seriously, I’m 5’8 size 4-6 and it looked horrible on me. :-(

I love the article about style bloggers—I was just thinking to myself how much I HATE that pose they all do—the one with one outstretched hand behind their ear, while they look down at what they’re wearing. Every poses like that, why, WHY??

I would like the article about what to major in if it didn’t leave out liberal arts majors for some inexplicable reason. The only one mentioned was psychology. I am a Political Science/History major, and I was dismayed to read an article that acted as if students like me either didn’t exist or weren’t worth mentioning.
