Hi! I probably should be e-mailing this, but I just wanted to put this general question out here somewhere for anyone to help me out with. I’m going to NY for the first time in a few years, and Topshop’s up there on my places to stop by. The thing is, everything looks so pretty on their site, and I don’t have all the money to buy everything. =P
Does anyone who is familiar with Topshop have any suggestions/advice on which types of clothes to invest in and which types of clothes Topshop makes especially well? I’m trying to vary my wardrobe a little bit. My style leans toward romantic, comfortable pieces, but I want to add some more edge overall.
Thanks in advanceee.
Hannah
Topshop is such a fun experience – it’s a must-see whenever you’re in the city. I would suggest giving yourself a budget before you walk in the door. I try on anything within my budget that I like, and then narrow down my selection once I’m in the dressing room. The one piece I would definitely reccomend is the tights! The quality is excellent and they have a really great range of styles.
Also, remember to bring your student ID – 10% off!

Thanks a ton Hannah! I’ve been looking for some good quality tights, so that’s good news. great advice on sticking to a set budget =D I hope I’ll have lotsa time to look around. wish me luuck.

Hey Vanessa Anne!
I love, love, LOVE Topshop, but yes, it is pretty expensive. What I found is best to do is look for interesting statement pieces there that you would not be able to find anywhere else. The pieces I pick up at Topshop are usually their more avant garde, standout looks–this way, I’m spending money on a more one-of-a-kind style that will stand of and be a piece I treasure rather than just a plain shirt I’d wear to class (and could probably find cheaper at Forever 21).
Look for items with sequins or other intricate fabrics and designs that are worth spending the extra cash on (they currently have some great structured skirts that look way more expensive than they are). Also, be sure to try things on before you get them and as Hannah said, bring your student ID with you! I agree with all of Hannah’s advice, and I love the tights there, too!
Just be forewarned that the Topshop store itself is kind of overwhelming–don’t let the glitz and glamour of the items surrounding you and the fabulously adorned shoppers next to you make you forget your budget! Really look at pieces before you buy them, envision them as outfits with other pieces in your closet, and walk around with them a bit before buying them. If they withstand these tests, you’ll be sure to be adding amazing additions to your wardrobe!

Vanessa- Anne,
I live in the UK and we have TopShop in every town so I can probably give you a few pointers.
- I definitely agree about the tights, I’m a bit of a tights fanatic anyway, but I’ve recently bought a gorgeous pair of black and nude heart print ones which are amazing
- the shoes are also fab. i have a few gorgeous pairs from there but they aren’t cheap!!
- they havea lot of pearl jewellery and a lot of nudes in at the moment (over here at least) which i’ve bought in bulk as I can’t wait for the nude trend this Spring. That will defintiely work with your romantic style.
- i also really love their skirts. They have some great patterned skirts which look great with just a plain top
- I wouldn’t spend money on any of their basics, tshirts or jeans thought cause in my opinion they aren’t much better than many other places.
There are a lot of reasonably priced items (well, I’m not sure how the exchange rate fares but still!!) that are definitely worth the money, and there are a few great things that are amazing but there are a lot of things i’d consider to be overpriced. But they’re a lot cheaper than designer so if you’re willing to spend the money go for it!!
TopShop is very on-trend, but some of it can be a little out-there!! Like Collen says, see what you think you could work into your wardrobe!!
I hope this is helpful, if you want to ask my any more you can ask me on my blog- i’m often dressed head to toe in TopShop if you want any inspiration!!
