A good pair of boots! This year I’m all about the over the knee riding boot. I’m vegan so I bought a cognac-colored pleather pair and I’m loving them. Yes, they’re still sitting in my closet because it’s still 88 degrees in Florida, but I’m already creating the outfits that I’ll pair them with. Boots are essential to me because they’re a no-brainer way to be stylish and they’re useful. Sometimes I go right from campus to the barn (I’m on the college equestrian team). I wouldn’t wear these pair to actually ride in, but when it’s chilly out and you don’t want your feet to get cold (or stepped on!), they become essential!

I love OPI (I get it on sale at local salons and on eBay), but any time I see a cool polish I have to buy it. You can buy them in black or brown to go with any look, or you can pick up a pair of brightly colored or patterned Docs to make them your statement piece. You can get the cute animal ones that remind you of childhood or the high knee socks to fold on top of your new leather smelling boots! At first, it seems a bit hard for me to narrow my fashion must haves for fall down to one, singular, be all and end all item, since my style is so thoroughly focused on fall knits and dark colors as close to year-round as I can get away with. Almost all of the staples of my wardrobe could be considered autumn or winter pieces- tights, leather boots, scarves and knit hats- the list goes on. But it finally occurred to me that, when it really comes down to fall, the real difference is made by what I wear over it all. Since I spend a lot of time outdoors in the cold, sometimes all people will see of my outfit for the day will be the jacket that I choose to keep warm with, so a statement coat is an ABSOLUTE MUST. The wrong outerwear can absolutely ruin the silhouette of an ensemble, but a well chosen piece can really elevate your outfit to new heights. As it gets chilly, you really have no choice but to wrap up, so I really like to make it count!

CARDIGANS!!! Any and all forms of cardigans: solid color, cropped, long sleeved, printed, argyle, ruffles, cashmere, cotton… I could go on for hours. They are my ultimate fall staple because I live in MN where the weather gets cold quick. So I wear them over everything. I have a bright salmon colored one that is the perfect addition to a boring tshirt and jeans outfit, but I also have a cream colored silk blend one with ruffles that is a great addition to girly up an outfit, and at the same time make an outfit look a little bit more polished and professional. There are many must-haves for fall- perfect denim, trench coat, cardigans, scarves, etc. But my number one must-have is definitely a good pair of boots. It doesn’t really matter what type they are, as long as they are classic and comfy. Riding boots are a good choice, and so are leather ones. My boots are brown suede from Charlotte Russe, and are warm and comfortable, and has lasted me through last fall and winter, and will do the same for this fall.

They look awesome with ripped jeans and layered with a leather bomber, any type of scarf, and either scrunched suede boots or just a plain converse sneaker to punk it up a bit. I bought some black half-gloves about two weeks ago, used my diy-skills so that they’d fit me better (I have ultra-tiny hands), and now I wear them in the evenings when it gets cool since my sleeves are usually long enough to cover the rest of my hands anyway and they look classy when I get inside and take my jacket off. I also recently finished making a pair of pink-lined black fingerless gloves that I wore to the club the other night. I’ve been a hoodie wearer for most of my life, and after deciding I needed a serious outer-wear overhaul, I just fell in love with all of the oversized knit sweaters that I find everywhere! They’re so versatile too! On warmer days (it’s hard to find those in the mountains, though), a tunic like sweater can just be worn with leggings, and ta-da! Definitely one of Jil Sander’s coats for the +J collection she does for UNIQLO. I used to work there and I got to sort of intern with her assistant Gabrielle and there is so much detail that goes into each piece. And it’s affordable! It’s democratic fashion at its finest.

Scarves and long, dangling necklaces. Layered pieces really make an outfit. You can wear the same cardigan or long sleeved shirt everyday other day and no one would notice as long as you have cute accessories like brightly printed scarves and jeweld tone necklaces paired with the outfit!

My #1 fall fashion must is definitely the boyfriend sweater. Oversize-comfy sweaters go great with leggings, jeans, and just about any accesories. They’re comfortable for class without looking like a complete bum and I’m nice and warm getting there.

My fall fashion must have is any kind of scarf. I love scarves and I think they can totally change an outfit. If I am wearing jeans and a plain t-shirt, I throw on a colorful scarf and make it interesting! If I have a skirt and cardigan on, I use a more dressy scarf with a simple pattern. Scarves just tie everything together!
