One Item, Four Ways: Cape Coat

For this week’s installment of One Item, Four Ways, I chose a type of outerwear that has been getting more attention recently: the cape coat. Although the idea of a jacket without actual sleeves may seem odd to you at first, a cape coat is actually a surprisingly versatile (and undeniably glamorous) option for cold weather!

Whether you choose a solid-colored or patterned cape, it’s a perfect winter wardrobe wakeup for those of you who are tired of your worn-out peacoats and bomber jackets. Read on to see four different ways to style this trendy winter wardrobe staple.

Outfit 1: All That Glitters

In this look, a casual outfit is taken to the next level, thanks to the sparkles on this long-sleeve tee and the chic factor of the cape. Gold sparkles complement the cape coat’s buttons perfectly, and simple jeans and riding boots will keep the look from getting too fussy. A rich green cross-body bag adds just enough color to this outfit, which I would wear for a day full of holiday shopping.

Outfit 2: Marvelously Monochrome

A cape looks super sophisticated when you pair it when pieces in the same color family. A simple long sleeve tee will keep you warm outside, but will also keep you comfortable when you’re inside and the heaters are blasting. Emerald-colored earrings and a gold ring add just enough sparkle to this look, which would be perfect for a day of classes — if they’ve already ended at your university, you could wear this over break, too.

Outfit 3: Night Out Outerwear

Dress, Tights, Heels, Earrings, Wristlet

Cape coats are also a great outerwear choice for nights when you want to get a little more dolled up. Depending on the length of the cape, you can let a little bit of your dress peek out underneath. Pairing a form-fitting dress – like this simple long-sleeved one – with a cape creates a chic silhouette. Thick tights will keep your legs warm, and a festive wristlet will carry your necessities in style.

Outfit 4: Uptown Meets Downtown

Sweater, Jeans, Shoes, Earrings, Bracelet

This look is probably my favorite of the four. I love the contrast of the whimsical sweater with the cape: even though they’re different patterns, because they are both relatively neutral, the result is a look that’s both playful and stylish. Dark-wash, bootcut jeans are a refreshing break from the usual skinnies, and the Converse are dressed up with the addition of some sparkly jewels. (You could also add heeled booties for an even more polished look.)

What Do You Think?

Do you own a cape coat? What’s your favorite type of outwear? Which look is your favorite? What other items would you like to see featured in “One Item, Four Ways?” I’d love to hear from you, so be sure to leave a comment!

I just broke out my cape coat today because it was so cold. I was totally channelling Blair Waldorf and just a hint of Red Riding Hood. Loved your outfit choices!

I’ve been wanting a cape coat, but it’s not really a “need” since I live in Texas and don’t need that many coats, haha.
I’m loving the colors of outfit 1, especially the GLITTER top!

I don’t get it… a coat that has open sleeves and a wide open bottom? It’s really cute but for fall/spring. Is this really a winter coat? I guess it would work well for people in warmer climates. The outfits are adorable, especially #3.

I want a cape coat SO bad! I found one at Express that is perfect. It has a belt and pockets, which I think gives the style a sleeker look. It is on my Christmas list for sure :-)

This is good! I’ve had a cape coat since last Christmas but I didn’t wear it very much because I felt a bit swamped and like there were too many folds and layers in my clothes! Clearly the trick is to keep a tight silhouette on my legs. Thanks!
