Fashion from The Talented Mr. Ripley

The Talented Mr. Ripley is one of my favorite movies of all times for so many reasons… one of them being its overwhelming visual appeal. Everything in this movie is beautiful – from the actors, to the background, to the outfits!

Gwyneth Paltrow’s look in this movie is very feminine and beachy, with a touch of old school prepster mixed in. She throws basic pieces together with vintage inspired ones to create a look that is laid-back and completely pulled together at the same time.

I’ve put together four outfits so that you can try this look for yourself!

The Outfits

Outfit 1: A day on the beach

Vintage-inspired bikinis are a great way to channel the Talented Mr. Ripley look. Prints like nautical stripes and classic polka dots in colors like peach and navy blue give the vintage bikinis a bit of Gwyneth’s classically preppy look.

Outfit 2: A morning at the market

This look is totally effortless, yet still preppy and put-together. A timeless white button-down shirt works well with pleated shorts and pretty sandals. A simple clutch with a woven look goes with the shoes to tie everything together.

Outfit 3: Afternoon coffee

Gwyneth’s look in the movie was very nautical and preppy – plenty of sea-inspired details, white, pastel colors, and timeless classics. This look perfectly sums up that vibe. A kelly green a-line skirt is classic yet fun, while an anchor-print tee has that nautical vibe. Classic white keds seamlessly transition from the tennis court to the yacht, while tortoiseshell ray-ban glasses are quintessentially preppy-chic. Once again, I finished this look off with a very Gwyneth-esque woven bag.

Outfit 4: Dinner on the terrace

For the final look, I paired a vintage-inspired dress with a few fun pieces for an outfit that channels the movie without being costumey. The nautical color palette is still at play here – a pleated blue dress is paired with a tan cardigan and chic nude pumps. For an even stronger nautical vibe, I added some fun anchor earrings and a marine-inspired charm bracelet to finish things off.

I’m not going to lie, I watch this movie for the outfits. I especially love #2 & #4. I actually believe I can do #4 for work, I can’t wait to try it :)

just a warning, the brown clutch from target in the second outfit is a piece of junk. I bought it last year and it broken within 2 weeks of my owning it and I’m not particularly rough with my belongings or anything.

other than that, great post. i love this style

I love the outfits but I cant wear them cause it would be to cold. I guess u could add legings but that would ruin some of the elegance…

    Great post!

I especially love the second and fourth outfits, very feminine, simple and classic- exactly my style. These clothes aren’t exactly suited for fall weather though.

Those outfits are totally awesome! :D I tried going to aldoshoes.com to find those sandals, but it said the website was unavailable… Could you possibly tell me how much they cost (I live in Canada, so obviously our price is different, but just for a general idea), or any stores that have sandals similar to those? Thanks! :)

You should republish this post during the Spring/Summer season! Again, it would be fun to see how to incorporate a nautical feel to a fall/winter wardrobe.
