For this week’s installment of 10 More Movies for Fashion Inspiration, we’ll be taking a closer look at the 1956 French film And God Created Woman (also known as “Et Dieu… créa la femme”.) The film follows an 18-year-old wild child, Juliette (Brigitte Bardot), whose unconventional behavior often gets her in trouble. This is the movie that put Brigette on the map and popularized her “sex kitten” persona and style.

And God Created Woman Style

Brigitte is the definition of bombshell in And God Created Woman and her character’s wardrobe reflects that. There are lots of formfitting pieces, like shirt dresses, pencil skirts, and snug dresses, yet the looks still leave a lot to the imagination.

Want to try and emulate Ms. Bardot’s style in the film? Check out these four outfits inspired by And God Created Woman.

Outfit #1: Total Vixen

Products: Bodysuit – Forever 21, Skirt – H&M, Shoes – Nordstrom, Bag – Urban Outfitters, Earrings – Nordstrom

This outfit will make you look ultra feminine yet still has a conservative vibe. The bodysuit creates a smooth and streamlined look that’s especially bombshell-sexy when paired with a high-waisted wrap skirt.

These pointed-toe slingbacks have a very 1950s feel that’s still right-now trendy. Add a patent handbag and textured drop earrings to complete this modern take on retro style.

Outfit #2: Subtly Sexy

Products: Dress – Urban Outfitters, Shoes – Revolve, Bag – Francesca’s, Ring – Anthropologie

You can never go wrong with a fitted shirt dress in a pretty, pale blue color. In the movie, Juliette wore this simple dress silhouette and still made it look effortlessly chic and sultry.

To capture the look, pair your dress with rust-colored sandals and a matching purse. Accessorize with an eye-catching statement ring for an extra touch of glam.

Outfit #3: Va-Va-Voom

Product Information: Dress – ASOS, Clutch – DSW, Shoes – Vince Camuto, Earrings – Baublebar, Bracelet – Baublebar

This outfit screams bombshell. The pencil dress is super-flattering and eye-catching in a gorgeous oxblood hue. It also features a Bardot neckline, which is—you guessed it—named after Brigette!

The black clutch and kitten heels look straight out of the 1950s. For the finishing touch, add a bejeweled bracelet and coordinating ear crawlers. Now you’re ready for any formal event.

Outfit #4: Beach Bunny

Products: Swimsuit – Unique Vintage, Hat – Modcloth, Sunglasses – Nordstrom, Bag – Gap, Shoes – Nordstrom Rack

Brigitte Bardot is famous for popularizing the bikini. With an adorable ruffled top and high-waist bottoms, this retro-inspired two piece has more coverage than most other swimsuits for a more 1950s look.

To accessorize, add a wide-brimmed floppy hat and slide-on sandals. In addition, a straw tote is roomy and durable enough to carry to the beach or pool. Don’t forget to slip on a pair of vintage-inspired cat-eye sunglasses!

Are you feeling inspired?

  1. The “Inspired By…” Articles are the best thing that ever happened to this blog site! You all should make it 30 instead of 10!! Women of that era knew how to dress for their body type and words like “tailored” were not uncommon. Keep this series going! 🙂

  2. I LOVE that 50’s style swimsuit. Come to think of it, a post on more alternative/retro style swimwear would be great now that the weather is getting warmer 😀
