You know those days – the ones where you roll out of bed (after hitting the snooze button too many times), stumble into your closet, and have no idea what to wear? Our new series, Easy Outfit Formulas, is here to help! Every other week, I’ll feature two items (which you probably already own) that can be paired into outfits for those days when you need some quick and easy inspiration.

This week, we’re combining two classic college girl fashion staples: a plaid shirt and blue jeans. Chances are you already have these pieces in your closet – they’re comfy, casual, and you can style them in so many ways.

Just in case you doubt it, here are three plaid-and-jean looks to suit every style:

Outfit #1 – Preppy

Product Info: Shirt – Target, Jeans – American Eagle, Sweater – Old Navy, Shoes – Amazon, Bag – River Island, Earrings – Accessorize, Glasses – ASOS, Hair –

Here’s a preppy take on this formula. Start with your favorite plaid shirt (preferably a lightweight cotton, rather than flannel) and a classic pair of blue jeans. Then layer on a gray sweater, making sure to pull out the collar and cuffs of your plaid shirt underneath.

Continue the academic vibe by slippling on a pair of brown oxfords and a cute pair of slightly-nerdy glasses. To keep your look effortless, grab a slouchy messenger bag and wear your hair in a loose side braid. Just add a pair of silver owl studs to polish off the ensemble!

Outfit #2 – Grunge

Product Info: Shirt – Urban Outfitters, Graphic Tee – Delia’s, Jeans – H&M, Boots – Forever 21, Backpack – River Island, Bracelet – Mango, Earrings – Juicy Couture, Beanie – Topshop

As you’ve probably noticed, grunge is back for fall, and what better way to wear the trend than with ’90s-style plaid flannel and some distressed jeans?

Start with some ripped jeans and a concert tee, and wear your plaid flannel shirt open over the top. A pair of combat boots and a durable black backpack are practical choices, while a woven cuff and dark stud earrings add a bit of sparkle. For those colder days, just pull on a cozy beanie to cover your bedhead – no hair styling required!

Outfit #3 – Dressy

Product Info: Shirt – Modcloth, Jeans – H&M, Shoes – Gap, Bag – Miss Selfridge, Necklace – Dorothy Perkins, Lipstick – Maybelline ColorSensational Lipcolor in “Plum Perfect,” Earrings – Dorothy Perkins, Hair –

This last outfit proves that plaid and jeans can work for dressy occasions, too! Try this for a nice dinner with family, or even in a casual office setting.

Start by picking a plaid blouse and dark wash jeans for a more polished outfit. Then add a pair of colorful pointed-toe flats and a statement necklace, and swipe on some trendy berry lipstick. Simple rhinestone studs and a black bowler bag keep the look classic. Style your hair in your favorite updo, and you’re ready to go.

What do you think of the plaid shirt and blue jeans combo? Do you have these items in your closet? How would you style them? Let us know in the comments!

Love this post. My style is so all over the place that I would wear every one of these outfits.

This is such a great series, Callan! They’re outfits that are classic, and should be no-brainers, but you can’t always come up with yourself when you’re in a hurry. Also, I LOVE posts that help us work with our own closets, rather than having to go out and get new pieces. Thanks for writing this!

You forgot an obvious look with this pairing: cowboy boots and a wide belt for a western style look.

This is really helpful. I am always found in the grunge outfit sans sparkly earrings because grunge is a no sparkle style. I recently moved to a small town where I get eyebrow raises and stares when I go out in my usual style so I’m trying to move more towards the preppy and dressy options. I’m totally clueless though! So thank you so much!
