Easy Outfit Formulas: Crop Top and Maxi Skirt
Photos: Top, Skirt

You know those days – the ones where you roll out of bed (after hitting the snooze button too many times), stumble into your closet, and have no idea what to wear? Our series Easy Outfit Formulas is here to help! Every other week, I’ll feature two items (which you might own already) that can be paired into outfits for those days when you need some quick and easy inspiration.

It’s back! Easy Outfit Formulas is starting up again in preparation for the back-to-school season, when getting back into a hectic academic schedule can leave you pressed for time in the morning. But not to fear – just pin or bookmark your favorite Outfit Formula posts to refer back to on those extra-busy days.

This week, I wanted to share a formula that’s perfect for the summer-to-fall transition: cropped tops and maxi skirts. This trendy combination is great because it’s easily adaptable for transitional weather. It also gives you the option of bearing a bit of skin or not, depending on how high on your waist you wear your skirt.

Scroll down to check out three chic ways to style this combo:

Elegant Summer Evening

White crop top and flowy maxi skirt outfit
Product Info: Top – Mango, Skirt – Forever 21, Heels – Daily Look, Bracelet – Urbanog | Hair Photo: ELLE

This look is romantic, minimalist, and, in my opinion, perfect for a warm weather date night. All it takes is a soft, flowy maxi skirt in a delicate print and a white sleeveless cropped blouse. The accessories shouldn’t compete with the rest of the look, so keep it simple with leg-elongating ankle strap heels and a twisted gold cuff. For the finishing touch, style your hair in a loose and effortless braid.

Eclectic Cool

Product Info: Tee – Delia’s, Skirt – Kohl’s, Sneakers – 6pm, Bag – Urban Outfitters, Bracelets – Wet Seal, Beanie – Nordstrom

This next outfit is ultra-cool and trendy, with maybe just a touch of grunge, so it would be ideal for a class-to-night-out scenario (maybe hitting a rock concert on a Friday night?). I love the eclectic pairing of a casual cropped graphic tee and a more dressy sheer black maxi skirt. A pair of purple hi-top sneakers adds color and makes the look more fun and youthful.

Keep the accessories simple with a sleek black backpack and silver bangles. If the weather is cooler, polish off the look with a slouchy black beanie.

Boho Autumn

Cropped sweater and maxi skirt fall outfit
Product Info: Sweater – Lord & Taylor, Skirt – Daily Look, Boots – Sears, Bag – Pacsun, Ring – Nordstrom, Hat – Hot Topic

This is a super stylish yet relaxed ensemble that’s perfect for fall – wear it while flea market hunting, attending a relaxed outdoor concert, or just to class. Simply pair a flowy burgundy maxi skirt with a cropped black sweater, then slip on buckled ankle boots for a rustic touch (and a bit of height). Accessorize with a turquoise ring, a printed drawstring bag, and a floppy felt hat to channel that bohemian, “free spirit” vibe.

Thoughts?

What do you think of this outfit formula? Do you have these pieces in your closet? Which look is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!

I’m so looking forward to fall! I can’t wait to have an excuse to wear all my flannel – but I may have to start wearing maxi skirts and crop tops as well!

Great Post! I’ve been pairing crop tops with maxi skirt for pretty much the whole summer now and I just love how the combination gives it that hipster, festival feeling you know? It’s like they were meant to be together since they are like total opposite of each other (Long Skirt, Short Top… Opposites are just meant to attract each other!).

My favourite outfit from this list would have to be the second outfit! It’s similar to my style and it looks like something that I would definitely wear to school or just about anywhere and I would also wear with with either a bold Plaid shirt or a Leather jacket!

Thanks everyone! Glad you liked the post, and let me know if you have any pieces you want to see featured in an upcoming Easy Outfit Formula!

Rosina – I’ve actually read that story, but I didn’t even realize that’s where the quote was from (now I like that shirt even more)!

Julie – You could actually try wearing a flannel shirt over a more fitted crop top and maxi skirt, and with sneakers, for a grungy, hipster look!

Tiffany – I totally agree, and the opposites-attract thing was exactly my thought process! I love mixing contrasting styles.

If you could find a hair tutorial for loomnumber one, that would be super helpful! Love the look, and I’d love to be able to complete it with the updo

    Kat – Here’s a messy braid tutorial that I like: http://www.abeautifulmess.com/2012/06/how-to-style-a-messy-braid.html
It’s not exactly the same as the one in the picture above, but I think it would look great with that outfit! For other versions, try searching YouTube.

    LOVE outfit #2!

Does anyone know how to do the hairstyle from the first outfit (or know the name of it so I can youtube it)? If I master it then I’m definitely gonna use it as my “go to” hairstyle.

LR – Check out the link I posted above, which shows a tutorial on how to do a messy braid. The picture in outfit #1 is actually from a runway show, so I don’t have instructions on how to do that exact braid, but if you search “messy braid” on YouTube there should be lots of similar ones.
