Class to Night Out: Culotte Shorts

Do you struggle with transforming your outfits from day to night? Don’t worry, CF is here to help turn that daily annoyance into a fun challenge. Class to Night Out focuses on one piece per week, and aims to help you take your look from study sessions in the library to dancing the night away.

Remember how awesome skorts were, back in the day? These skirt/shorts hybrids made playground activities a breeze, especially if you were a girly-girl like me and absolutely refused to wear pants. (What? They were uncomfortable. I came around by fourth grade – I swear.) I was so ‘9os fabulous that I even had an overall skort that made running around like a maniac all too easy.

Rejoice, fellow skort-lovers, because they’re back! As culottes, that is. It’s a much fancier name, but they’re essentially the same thing (though today’s culottes are much more stylish than the floral-embroidered denim skorts I used to own). Culottes look super sleek and a bit retro on everybody, so I thought I’d devote this week’s post to showing you how to style a pair of culottes for both a day of classes and a night out.

Culotte Shorts: Class

Grunge up these girly shorts with a bold graphic tee and distressed denim jacket. This modernizes the look and creates an edgy contrast that’s super-chic, but still casual enough for class. Next, add neutral accessories like a tan messenger bag and matching embellished sandals for interest. Complete this ensemble with girly jewelry with an edge, like these gold spike drop earrings and colorful skull-adorned wrap bracelets.

Culotte Shorts: Night Out

Create a sweet-yet-sultry nighttime outfit by pairing your shorts with a semi-sheer lime crop top. The high waist of the shorts keeps you from showing too much skin, but keeps things youthful and fun. Wear a black lace bandeau underneath to amp up the sex appeal. Mix neutrals with a pair of deep brown platform sandals and a matching cross-body bag, which gives the look an earthy vibe. For the finishing touch, add a pop of bright color by painting your nails a trendy cornflower blue.

Your thoughts?

Will you be rocking culottes this spring? How would you style them? Be sure to let me know what you think of the outfits in the comments – I love hearing your thoughts!

I find the name quite amusing seeing as the word ‘culotte’ means ‘panties’ in french!!

I love this sort of shorts, but I find that they’re always cut REALLY short. For someone like me who isn’t hugely fond of their thighs, that ruins the whole idea.

i got a pair from korea last year, and i love them! they are kind of short, but you definitely feel less awkward than you would in a skirt.

When I first read the title I got a bit shocked: I’m from Argentina and here “Culotte” means the boy short kind of panty.
I’m so glad you didn’t want us to go sans pants in public, these culottes are much cuter ;)

Ha, I used to wear culottes for Brownies and thought that they were called clots. Will I be wearing them again? I’m unsure! I like the idea of them since I always end up flopping around on the grass in summer and it’d stop me from flashing anyone whilst still having a summery girly outfit, but think I’d have a hard time of styling them. I’m not opposed to them, though!

I would love to wear these but I feel like a skirt would be so much more comfortable. I can’t be the only one whose thighs rub together causing shorts to ride up. This times 1000 in culottes.

Already wear them and love them! Have a pair that has geometric patterns on them: love! Another cool way I’ve found to wear them is to pair it with a long shirt untucked and belted. With the right shirt, it can create an illusion of a dress with a cute pleated bottom that looks very vintagey!

Culottes aren’t skorts, though…the former is a divided skirt while the latter is a skirt with shorts attached underneath the skirt…

I miss these! I used to wear them all the time and I’m glad that they’re back :)
