Do you struggle with transforming your outfits from day to night? Don’t worry, CF is here to help turn that daily annoyance into a fun challenge. Class to Night Out focuses on one piece per week, and aims to help you take your look from study sessions in the library to dancing the night away.

If I could sum up this summer in one trend, it’d be Americana. Red, white and blue is absolutely everywhere, and it’ll definitely stick around long after the Fourth of July. Whether you wear them rugged, edgy or preppy, Americana-inspired pieces create classic looks that have evolved way past your family’s Independence Day barbecue.

That being said, this week I’ll be showing you two ways to style my favorite Americana piece, flag shorts. Part preppy sailor, part Lana Del Rey, these shorts (which we showed you how to DIY earlier this week) are just plain cool. And even though the Fourth has passed, you can bet I won’t be the only one still rocking them this summer.

Try out a polished, but rugged daytime outfit by pairing your shorts with a crisp white oxford shirt. This balances the ensemble while adding a little casual sophistication — which keeps you from looking like you just left the parade route. Grab a pair of flat ankle booties and a matching belt for an earthy edge, and paint your nails a vivid cobalt for more patriotic spirit. Complete the look with a pair of silver star studs (of course!).

If you need something to wear for a wild night out, look no further than this look. Sometimes these shorts can look a little costume-y, so they’re great for music festivals and crazy block parties.

Start with an edgy graphic cropped tank for a cool, slightly masculine vibe, then try a pair of menswear-inspired flat booties. Add a matching cross-body bag and a layered cross necklace for an extra touch of wickedness. Grab a pair of cool wishbone earrings and complete the look with an unexpected pop of color — a bubbly pink nail polish creates pretty contrast in this otherwise-edgy look.

Your thoughts?

Are you rocking the Americana trend this summer? How would you style these shorts? Be sure to let me know what you think of the outfits in the comments, and what other pieces you’d like to see featured on Class to Night Out!

I love the shorts and both of the outfits! Adding the nail polish for pops of color is a perfect idea! I think this Anericana trend is supercute. I might try the DIY though since the shorts posted are $56 :(
