Plus, it seems that it’s mainly in the monetarily “richer” countries that people dress very casually/sloppily. It is not classist or vain/decadent to try to express onself or look nice. In most countries around the world this is a normal thing to do, and it is polite. It has nothing to do with money.

Anyhow, generic mall-brand clothing is much more expensive than recycled secondhand clothes, and of course the mall/chain store clothes are not as well-made as anything sewn yourself.

Everyone just assumes that dressing up is expensive or that you have to own brand names… no way! I find amazing stuff with sequins and pink and everything for really cheap at goodwill!

this is my fav, fav FAVORITE post of all time :) i love it so much its practically my 10th time reading it :P

i always dream about the glamorous, cosmopolitan life i’m going to live when i’m older, have more money, etc.

why not live it now?

that’s why i dress up :)

besides if you start now with what resources you have….i’m sure you’d only get closer to living that dream. :)

This article is amazing! I love it. Me and my friends just love to dress up and look good. I go to Target/Walmart/ Safeway pretty much any grocery store looking like I could easily end up at a concert!
Makes me feel good about myself ( and yes also the attention from other people, c’mon nobody can deny that everyone craves a lil bit of fashion attention!)
Awkward Grinnellian- I understand what you are saying about going to college, being on scholarships and working hard to get through college. Believe me I am in college! But fashion isn’t always about going to Bebe or DKNY or anything like that. Its about showing/displaying who you are and what you are about. The way a person dresses up actually says a lot about their personality and their behaviour in general. You don’t have to have $500 jeans to be able to fit into the fashion group. Mix and match and pair up whatever you have. That is exactly how you are showcasing yourself. And put that fashion statement with a brilliant mind and you’ve got a winner!

I dress up because it makes me feel pretty, feminine, girlish, soft and sweet and it instills in me a wholeness, peace and contentment that I could never get from being a boy. I always wear a dress or skirt and heels or cute boots, take all the time I need to ensure my makeup is flawless and my outfit and accessories all work together beyond any doubt for the simple reason: it is what I live for; my total Zen nirvana; the core of my being and the seat of my soul. I would not even consider settling for less because if I am going to wear pants and sneakers I may as well be a boy and I’m sorry, but to me being a boy is the most dull, boring, and lifeless existence there is. I was blessed with feminine facial features so I pass as a natal/anatomical girl extremely well and do so more and more as time and my estrogen and anti-androgen regimen continues so in a skirt or dress I’m almost always the most well dressed and dressed up ‘girl’ wherever I go. When I look my female best I always get compliments about what I’m wearing and how I look and there is nothing more powerful than sincere compliments to infuse me with girlish delight, reinforce my femininity and confirm that my true gender is and has always been female. What else rocks my world?: having a natal/anatomical female address me as “Sweetie” and treat me as ‘just’ one of the girls; being hit on by a straight guy.

Ever since I went to university I’ve been more daring in what I wear and really make an effort most days – it makes me feel so pretty and confident! I remember one of my flatmates (who is a boy) told me that I should ‘just dress comfy’ – but looking good doesn’t mean that I’m not comfy! (boys – tsk!)

Anyway, this post has really encouraged me to keep looking pretty! Thanks – I stumbled across this website through Google and even though this is an American website (I’m from Scotland), I definitely shall return! Keep up the fabulous work!

–I dress up to amuse myself, give others something nice to look at, express myself, and to be creative
