Forever 21 to Launch First Designer Collaboration
Although it is a store that is often accused of copying designs, Forever 21 will soon be launching its first-ever designer collaboration, taking cues from stores like H&M and Target.
According to WWD, the collection, designed by LA-based celebrity favorite Brian Lichtenberg, will be available starting August 13.
Lichtenberg is known for his edgy designs, most often seen on red carpets and in music videos. You’re probably familiar with one of his most famous designs: Lady Gaga’s caution-tape outfit, from the “Telephone” music video.
He will be recreating Gaga’s look in his Forever 21 collection, with a tank top criss-crossed with caution-tape (which you can check out in the picture above). The collection will be available in 200 Forever 21 stores and will include a total of nine women’s and three men’s pieces, all priced under $15.
Lichtenberg said he designed the collection with style and a budget in mind:
“It is going to be for the customer that is younger and has seen my work on celebrities and musicians, but doesn’t have the money to plunk down for my main line. This is definitely going to be a great opportunity to be on a more global scale.”
So, what do you think?
What are your thoughts on this collaboration? Would you be interested in buying any pieces? Do you think designer collaborations are a good direction for Forever 21 to go in? This may be the first of many Forever 21 designer collaborations, so who else would you want to see design a collection for F21? Be sure to leave a comment and let us know your thoughts!

Hmm interesting… I didn’t consider Gaga’s caution tape outfit an outfit ;) It’s an easy DIY project ;)

Judging from the pictures above I don’t think I would buy any of his designs from Forever 21, but i am so excited that Forever 21 is doing this!

dude, that price point is crazy!

I find that a lot of the times these designer collaborations are way overrated. The pieces are usually boring for their price or just a watered down version of the real McCoy.

I wasn’t aware that GaGa’s tape was an actual outfit from a designer. I swear I thought it was just tape wrapped around her LoL. I love looking at designer colabs but never purchase them. A while ago, Target’s colabs were good but now they’re looking very ugly…not in a fashionable “I’m wearing something weird” way… just ugly.

I’m excited!
Can’t wait to see what they have, and for under $15? Perfect. Just my price range.

Let me know when Forever 21 starts selling clothes that fit people who are bigger than a 6-year-old, then maybe I’ll be excited. I am aware of their “plus-sized” line, since when is a size 12 plus-sized?

I HEART Forever 21. Can’t wait!

I’m with Kelly. Also let me know when they stop proselytizing. (Have you eve looked at the bottom of an F21 shopping bag?)
Charlotte
i like this idea! also, the verse on the bottom of the bag is, “do unto others as you would have them do onto you.” i would call this more of a universal example by which people should live their lives than a conversion encouragement.

I agree its interesting however i don’t think i’d go out any buy it, besides Forever 21 has shunned me to the plus side part (which is like waaaaay in the back at my local store)

i think a designer collaboration is a great idea! the caution tape’s a little too intense for my style, but i’d like to see what else he comes up with. i’d love to see them have a shoe designer collaboration, like h&m with jimmy choo!
p.s.
actually, charlotte, if you look up the verse john 3:16, you can see that it’s not what you said, it’s
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”
also faith, just cause they have a bible verse at the bottom of their bag doesn’t mean they’re trying to convert you, they’re just announcing (and quite subtly) that they are christian. you can have a problem with their sizing, but it’s a little silly to complain about the founders’ beliefs.

It seems ironic to me that the store down right notorious for lawsuits over creative property now teams up with a designer…especially since there have been designers who have taken issue with F21 (once again…that whole creative property dispute shenanigan). The price point also raises some questions. I think we generally associate more successful designers with quality, both in design and product. I highly doubt that anything under $15 is going to be 1) a quality product with a life span of more that four wash cycles, or 2) ethically produced.
On the upside, if you can wade past the thought of sweatshops in third world countries, and if you only wear a particular garment a handful of times anyways, I think F21 will give the designer a lot of freedom to produce a very interesting little line. I’ll definitely check it out…but probably won’t buy.

Kelly,
Thank you so much; I was confused!

I think Forever 21 moving in this direction is great! Collaborations are usually a good thing! I’m looking forward to the first designer collabs!
