Fashion Recap: 2012 Grammy Awards Red Carpet

The 54th annual Grammy Awards were held last night, and all the biggest stars in music were out to celebrate. As such, we have tons of fashion to discuss! Let’s get to it; below are our picks for our favorite (and least-favorite) looks of the night.

Top 5 Best-Dressed

Here are my picks for best dressed at this year’s Grammy Awards, in no particular order:

Adele in Custom Giorgo Armani

What a night for Adele — she won a total of six Grammys last night, including album of the year for 21! She definitely didn’t disappoint in the fashion department either with this lovely custom three-quarter sleeved black sequin gown by Armani. But pictures don’t do this dress justice — it looked so sparkly and glamorous as Adele was walking down the red carpet. She completed her look with a retro-inspired hairdo and a classic red lip.

Carrie Underwood in Gomez-Gracia

Carrie Underwood chose to wear a gorgeous white Gomez-Garcia gown and looked positively ethereal. While the dress looked a little conservative in the front, the cut-out back showed some skin and added a hint of sex appeal. Carrie also wore her hair pulled back into a soft and romantic ‘do and accessorized with statement earrings and a black clutch.

Corinne Bailey Rae in Christian Siriano

“Best R&B Performance” winner Corinne Bailey Rae went with a fun and flirty black ruffled cocktail dress designed by Christian Siriano. This LBD had a classic-meets-quirky vibe, which Corinne complemented beautifully with sky-high platforms, a bold lip and side-swept hair.

Taylor Swift in Zuhair Murad

T. Swift wears lots (and I do mean lots) of sparkly dresses, but this one really knocked it out of the ballpark for me — she looked amazing! This high-neck Zuhair Murad gown had some really interesting cut-outs and the beadwork looked absolutely exquisite. Taylor wore her hair in a no-frills bun and only accessorized with a pair delicate drop earrings, allowing her gown to be the true focus of the look.

Rihanna in Custom Armani

Rihanna absolutely killed it last night in this sleek custom-made Armani gown. The dress was backless, had a plunging neckline and a thigh-high slit, so there was a lot going on, but Rihanna pulled it off flawlessly, managing to look both sultry and glam. To finish her look, Rihanna left her hair down and accessorized with some gold jewelry and a matching clutch.

Other Notable Ensembles

Whether you loved ‘em or hated ‘em, here are four more looks that made a stir on the red carpet last night:

Fergie in Jean Paul Gaultier Couture

Fergie at the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards

First of all, love that Fergie wore a super-trendy tangerine gown, but the rest of her look was sort of — uh– see through, leaving little to the imagination. Her jet black lingerie was on full display, which had many fashion commentators on the fence. Personally, we would have preferred this dress it if had been lined — what about you?

Jessie J in Julien Macdonald

Singer Jessie J rocked this pretty silver number designed by Julien Macdonald. The dress was covered in tiny reflective panels which gave off a sort of disco ball effect (but in a very chic way). This was another dress that looked even better on screen than in photos, as the silver panels bounced light to create a gorgeous sparkle. Jessie completed this look with a sleek ponytail and a simple black box clutch.

Katy Perry in Elie Saab Haute Couture

Katy usually tends to wear costume-y ensembles on the red carpet, but this time she went in a more glamourous direction by choosing this lovely Elie Saab gown. The backless baby blue appliqué gown featured a long train and Katy also styled her blue locks into a voluminous updo. What do you think — is color-coordinating your dress to your ‘do a good or bad thing?

Lady Gaga in Custom Versace

Okay, technically Lady Gaga didn’t walk the red carpet last night, but we can’t have a fashion recap without mentioning one of Gaga’s one-of-a-kind looks, right? At the ceremony, Gaga was spotted wearing this black fishnet ensemble complete with a gold accents and a matching scepter. While this look would be considered tame next to last year’s egg costume, it’s still pretty out there — what did you think of Gaga’s look?

Least Favorite Look

You know we can’t love everything we see on the red carpet. Here’s one look that I wasn’t a fan of at last night’s event.

Nicki Minaj in Custom Versace

Nicki Minaj at the 2012 Grammy Awards

Nicki’s known for wearing lots of statement-making ensembles, but this one was just bizarre. She showed up on the red carpet in this oversized red hooded cape and brought along a man dressed as the pope for good measure. Now, I love me some risky and experimental fashion, but this was way too over-the-top for me. What did you think Nicki’s look?

Your thoughts?

Now that you know what we think, tell us your opinion. Did you watch the Grammys last night? Who wins your pick for best-dressed? Any looks you didn’t like? Be sure to leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Well I’m not really a fan of Rihanna’s, Fergies, or Katys. I think Fergies would’ve been absolutely gorgegous if her “dress” had been lined. Katy’s reminded me of a Grandma dress, from the front anyways. And Rihanna’s is too… Revealing. And I’m not a fan of her as a blond. As for Nicki and Lady Gaga? Well there’s not much to be said… Everyone’s kinda used to the weird looks by now. But I just love Taylor Swifts, Adeles, and Jessie Js (I think she looks like Abby from NCIS, anyone else?) great post :)

In addition to the above mentions, I thought Paris Hilton surprisingly looked amazing! Her dress was a knockout.

Adelle looked amazing. When they showed her I couldn’t believe it was her. Also, Katy Perry may be the only person (except for someone like Gaga) who can make blue hair look glamorous at a red carpet event.

Adele looked fabulous! I loved her whole ensemble, and she put out a beautiful performance last night.

Most of these ladies look fabulous, but I think Fergie’s look is something that should stay on the runway.

I loved Adele’s look…she looked classic yet sophisticated and effortlessly chic. I suprisingly loved Katy’s look, she looked very nice and classic, and it was different from her ”crazy” out there looks. I just thinked Fergie and Rihanna was vulgar and too revealing. And Nicki…dear Nicki….I give her credit for trying to be creative but the outfit was just too much, especially the pope….she was just trying to get attention and it worked…but in a bad way.

Okay, I LOVEEEE Carrie Underwood’s dress, although not so much the back… I love Corinne Bailey Rae’s look too, fab!! Taylor Swift looks super glam, love that look too. And Katy Perry! Ahhhhhhh! <3333

HATE Rihanna's look though.. Not a fan of her new hair and wonderign why she can't cover up for once? She always seems to want ot sell her body, it's too much… And Nicki Minaj. What the hell happened? And the pope thing? Response: …………………Not even suprised anymore.

Loved the choices for top picks ESPECIALLY Taylor Swift in Zuhair! His stuff is AMAZING!!!

I thought Adele looked gorgeous, as usual. However, even though I loved Elie Saab’s latest collection, I thought Katy Perry looked matronly as all get out. Super unfortunate with a fabulous figure like hers. That being said, I love her blue hair.

I loved Taylor Swift’s look – very classic and she didn’t try to over-do anything! I Get that the see through dress was a statement – but it’s not appropriate for the event.

Adele looked beautiful! Nicki Minaj looks absolutely ridiculous, and her performance was ridiculous also. Lady Gaga actually looks toned down, haha.

    February 13th, 2012 at 5:56 pm

Love most of the choices for best dressed, Adele looked awesome and Taylor Swift always wears gorgeous sparkly dresses. I strongly disagree with Rihanna being up there though. One of the basic rules of design is balance: short skirt paired with conservative top, plunging neckline with full skirt. Rihanna made herself look cheap and tacky in this barely-there dress which would be better suited to a Vegas stripper. Definitely not red carpet worthy!

LOL at Nicki, Lady G, and Fergie!!! How do people wear stuff like that?!

Why do I keep missing award shows! Ah! Haha I love Taylor Swifts dress! And in Katy Perrys case yes matching your hair to your dress is a good thing :) Fergies outfit is strait up awful and I totally agree with you on Niki Minaj’s outfit. Great post!

I was not a fan of Nicki’s outfit or performance.
I thought that she was extremely offensive and will not listen to any of her other stuff.

I think Rihanna looked absolutely terrible. Her hair and the dress mostly just remind me of a hooker.

I actually like Rihanna’s look, not everybody can pull it off. But she did imo

    February 13th, 2012 at 11:45 pm

I think Rihanna looks trashy. She’s showing way too much skin. And I don’t like Fergie’s dress either due to the color and print. And wearing black lingerie underneath, while daring, just made it look worse.

I love anything sparkly! Adele, Carrie, & Taylor’s were favourites. I love all of Taylor’s sparkly dresses!

Rihanna kind of looks like a hot mess, other than that I love Taylor and Adele’s looks.

Loved Taylor Swift’s ensemble, she looks different from her usual style. Very effortlessly elegant. My favourite grammys look this time around!

On the other end of the spectrum, Nicki Minaj’s outfit and performance just reeks of ‘desperate for attention’ all over. It was just plain sad to watch.

  31. 31
    February 15th, 2012 at 6:20 am

I think all of these ladies looked nice BUT
Fergie: Put on some nude lace underwear+bra
Taylor Swift: The bun looks a tad bit matronly..Try a wavy faux-bob.
Lady Gaga: I really don’t care besides I miss the old GaGa, but no shade.
Nicki Minaj: I think that this was like a sneak peek into her performance. It’s a COSTUME and should be judged as such. :) That’s all.

Corinne Bailey Rae is extremely cute! I just love this dark gothic look.

Carrie Underwood is dazzling. Rihanna is a total sex bomb. And yes, Nicki Minaj is ridiculous …

I really loved Taylor Swift`s dress and Carrie`s was amazing!!!

    February 17th, 2012 at 12:29 pm

I know I’m the only one, but I hated Adele’s look. Maybe it is because I didn’t watch the grammys live and only saw photos. But come on, isn’t she only 23? I thought the dress is drab/grim-reaper and makes her look so much older. Was it an open back dress? It was just sooooo conservative. Also thought she could use some blush.

  36. 36
    February 18th, 2012 at 5:03 pm

I don’t think anyone realized that the grammy’s were two days before valentines day… Nicki Minaj was dressed as St.Valentine, which explains why she brought the Pope. It’s not offensive if you understand it.

  37. 37
    February 19th, 2012 at 5:08 pm

I am so glad Adele’s voice is back. I loved that she was not afraid to NOT show a lot of skin like some other young artists feel the need to do. Though I was not a big fan of Carrie Underwood’s look.
And Taylor has delivered another fabulous sparkly dress.
