Fashion Recap: 2012 Emmy Awards Red Carpet
In case you didn’t know, the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were held last night, and TV’s hottest stars were honored for their outstanding work. Before the ceremony, however, the celebs got to strut their stuff on the red carpet and as such, we have a ton of amazing fashion to discuss. Let’s get to it: scroll on down to discover our top 5 favorite looks of the night, plus five other noteworthy ensembles.
Top 5 Best-Dressed
In no particular order, here are my personal picks for best-dressed at this year’s Emmy Awards:
Kat Dennings in J. Mendel

Kat Dennings was one of the first celebs to walk the red carpet yesterday, and she definitely left quite the impression! Her trendy oxblood-colored gown by J. Mendel showed off her – ahem – assets in a way that was sultry, not vulgar, for a look with plenty of va-va-voom. Kat accessorized with a gold statement bangle and ring, and adorned her wavy ‘do with a gorgeous jeweled head piece. For the finishing touch, a bold red lip not only matched her gown perfectly, but added to that sultry, glamorous vibe.
Hayden Panettiere in Marchesa

Many fashion commentators were on the fence about Hayden’s choice to wear this Marchesa gown, but I for one absolutely loved it. While the fitted gold leaf gown would have been stunning on its own, the blue chiffon draping created gorgeous movement and made this look a red carpet standout. (Click here for a better view of the dress!) Hayden wore her hair in a chic topknot and accessorized with sleek gold clutch and simple jewelry, allowing the dress to be the true focus of the look.
January Jones in Zac Posen

Another one of those love-it-or-hate-it kinds of looks was January Jones in a black Zac Posen gown. The dress itself seemed like a work of art with its sculptural build, dramatic volume, and unique texture. One thing’s for sure: this black dress was anything but basic! January didn’t let accessories overpower the look either and opted to go with a sleek updo and fresh-faced make-up in order to keep the focus on the gown.
Lucy Liu in Atelier Versace

I love it when celebrities take red carpet fashion risks, so naturally I was drawn towards Lucy Liu’s decision to wear this one-of-a-kind Versace gown. The sculpted silver frock had a futuristic vibe, while Lucy’s slightly wavy side ponytail helped to soften the look and kept it from looking too severe.
Kelly Osbourne in Zac Posen

Although E! fashion commentator Kelly Osbourne wasn’t nominated for any Emmys, her red carpet fashion choice was a winner in my book. The purple Zac Posen gown was super-flattering on her figure, while she swept her lilac hair into a simple, yet chic ponytail. On anyone else, the whole matching-your-hair-color-to-your-gown thing might look tacky, but Kelly pulled this look off with ease.
Other Notable Ensembles
Whether you loved them or loathed them, here are five more looks that made a buzz on the 2012 Emmys red carpet:
Ginnifer Goodwin in Monique Lhuillier

Ginnifer Goodwin caused a stir in this vintage-inspired Monique Lhuillier gown last night. The nude gown with bright-red overlay created a fantastic contrast, while her matching ankle strap shoes complemented the look perfectly. What did you think of Ginnifer’s red carpet fashion choice?
Allison Williams in Oscar de la Renta

Emmy newcomer Allison Williams stunned last night in a gorgeous green peplum gown by Oscar de la Renta. While we didn’t love her Girls costar Lena Dunham’s look quite so much, Allison looked fabulous – she’ll definitely be a fashionista to watch in the years to come!
Emily VanCamp in J. Mendel

Revenge star Emily VanCamp exemplified how fantastic and simple and understated look can be in this dove gray J. Mendel gown. The gorgeous dress fit her perfectly, while her soft updo and minimalist accessories created a low-key, yet glamorous look. Did you like the gown Emily wore last night?
Sofia Vergara in Zuhair Murad

On the other side of the spectrum, Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara went with a sequined, body-hugging Zuhair Murad gown that showed off her famous curves. Between the fish-tailed hemline and teal color, Sofia’s dress actually kind of made her look like a mermaid — in a good way! Aside from the low-cut halter-neck, the gown also featured a dramatic cut-out back for a look that had lots of sex appeal. What do you think: did Sofia show just the right amount of skin or is this look too sultry for your taste?

Chelsea
Kelly Osbourne needed a different lip color.
My favorite of the night was Jessica Pare.
Rachel
I loved January Jones, but I thought Sofia Vergera’s dress looked too much like a prom dress.
Anne
Where oh where is Edie Falco’s Stella McCartney dress on this list? It was daring and sleek and flattering without being too overtly femme.
Until this post I hadn’t stopped to notice the beautiful shape to Kelly Osbourne’s gown. I think the color was distracting me and not my personal preference.. or it was the matching hair.. and I just glanced over it. But it really is so beautiful!
Sarah
In the article about January you need to change it to zac Posen instead of J Mendel
Casey
Hayden’s dress is stunning, and definitely a good thought, but in the alternative link you guys provided the back shot looks like the chiffon is wedged up her butt. They should have gathered it elsewhere.
And holy Kelly Osbourne!! I didn’t even recognize her! She looks amazing! And I love the matchy-matchy hair/ dress combo. (purple is my favorite color)
Jackie
no Tina Fey? I thought she looked amazing!
Taylor
I thought Julianne Houghs dress was gorgeous! http://tv.yahoo.com/photos/emmys-2012-red-carpet-report-card-slideshow/julianne-hough-photo-1348445854.html
Ash
Ooh, January Jones killed it!! I missed the show but she looks phenomenal here. And I love Allison Williams – wow! Didn’t expect her to wear something so bold but it works.
Steph B
I thought Allison Williams dress overwhelmed her a bit because she is a petite person. I second the Tina Fey comment, I thought she looked amazing At the Emmy’s too her dress fit her like a glove and it was gorgeous.
Nicole
I disagree completely!!!
Ana Hernandez
Emilia Clarke got best dressed in my book. Her dress is so great!
The colors were beautiful and she looked gorgeous in it.

Emily
Loved all of these dresses (although I oringally thought Hayden had a micro-taped to her chest!) also loved Tina fey’s dress, and the Mary from downtown abbey ( I know I’m horrible, I can’t remember her name, but she looked great!)
EM
i thought tina fey, leslie mann and jessica pare should have been on the list..they looked stunning..
heidi klum looked good too but the leg reminded me of angelina jolie- which isnt a bad thing:)
Emily
Also someone in my twitter feed said that both Amy poehler and mellisa marcartnry wore toy plastic rings chosen by their children so cute!
Stephanie
Hayden looks amazing as per usual, sad I didn’t get to watch.
Lani
I think you had great choices. I loved (almost) all the ones you chose. But where were Edie Flaco, and Julie Bowen.
Edie looked gorgeous in her dress, sexy yet not over-revealing. Gorgeous!
And Julie, omg, she was my favorite look of the Emmys. Her chartreuse dress was stunning. and I think her accessory choices and hair looked great with it! Best-dressed in my opinion.
Nadja
January Jones’ dress is very beautiful on its own, but black color doesn’t fit her at all.
camille
allison williams’ dress is GORGEOUS but i love january jones’ dress too
Kim
i didn’t like sofia vergara’s dress or hayden panettiere’s, but i loved ginnifer’s and tina looked very classic and sophisticated :)
