Fashion Recap: 2011 Academy Awards Red Carpet

The year’s best films were honored at last night’s 83rd Annual Academy Awards, so, of course, we have tons of amazing fashion discuss. Read on to find out my choices for best-dressed and other notable red carpet looks.

Top 5 Best-Dressed

Here are my picks for best-dressed at the 2011 Academy Awards, in no particular order:

Jennifer Lawrence in Calvin Klein

Best Actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence showed up on the red carpet early in this sleek, sexy red number, and immediately got everyone’s attention. The Calvin Klein dress was the epitome of simple and chic and showed off her amazing figure. Jennifer continued her laid-back, yet glam look with low-key makeup and accessorized with a classic gold bangle and sparkling clutch.

Hailee Steinfeld in Marchesa

Sparkling, neutral-colored dresses were big at this year’s Oscars and 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld wore my favorite one of the night. She looked adorable and age-appropriate in a tea-length pale pink dress. This one-of-a-kind Marchesa gown was actually designed in part by Hailee. Who knows? Maybe she’ll be a designer one day!

Mila Kunis in Elie Saab

I love me some Mila Kunis, and she definitely didn’t disappoint with this trendy lace dress in one of spring’s hottest colors: lavender. The gorgeous Elie Saab gown had plenty of sex appeal, but the lavender shade kept it looking fresh and fun, rather than overly sexy.

Reese Witherspoon in Armani Privé

Reese Witherspoon chose a very classic, Audrey Hepburn-like Armani Privé gown for last night’s ceremony. The fitted black gown looked great with her fabulous emerald earrings. My favorite part of her look, however was her unique updo (only Reese could make a ponytail work for the red carpet) and winged eyeliner. The overall look was very ’60s chic!

Natalie Portman in Rodarte

I was so happy for Natalie Portman last night! Not only for her Oscar win, but for her amazing Rodarte gown. (Although sources say Natalie was supposed to wear Dior last night – she’s the face of Dior perfumes – she changed to Rodarte last minute, amidst the John Galliano controversy. Scandalous!) At the SAGs and Golden Globes, I was less than impressed with Natalie’s choices, but this time she nailed it in the fashion department. She looked effortlessly chic and relaxed in this gorgeous purple gown. What did you think of her dress?

Other Notable Ensembles

As much as we would love to name more than five looks Best-Dressed, we have to draw the line somewhere. However, here are some other gowns that made a stir on the red carpet last night.

Cate Blanchett in Givenchy

Always boundary-pushing, the gorgeous Cate Blanchett caused a stir on the red carpet in Givenchy Haute Couture. This was definitely a love-it-or-hate-it look – while many were loving her risk-taking style, others hated the gown and its embellished bib style.

Editor’s note: Although I know lots of people hated her dress, Cate was actually my best-dressed pick! It takes guts to wear something like this on the red carpet, and I thought she pulled it off flawlessly.

Halle Berry in Marchesa

Halle Berry brought the glam to the red carpet in this nude, sparkly Marchesa gown. Although the dress wasn’t something you’d normally expect to see Halle in, she totally worked it, letting her fierce confidence shine through.

Scarlett Johansson in Dolce & Gabbana

Presenter Scarlett Johansson was on-trend last night in this lace-embellished cranberry gown by Dolce & Gabbana, finishing off her look with slightly disheveled hair and flawless makeup.

Hilary Swank in Gucci

Hilary Swank rocked another love-it-or-hate-it look last night, in this sequin and feather-embellished Gucci number. While some thought she looked glamorous, others thought the feathers were just too much, especially because the dress was already covered in over-the-top sequins. What do you think?

Least Favorite Look

As much as we wish they could, not all celebs can make the best-dressed list. Here’s one look I didn’t like at last night’s ceremony:

Melissa Leo in Marc Bouwer

I really wasn’t a fan of Melissa Leo‘s gown last night. The Marc Bouwer dress was definitely unique, but unfortunately it just reminded me of a sparkle-covered doily with a weird collar. It also wasn’t the most flattering. What did you think of her outfit choice?

Now that you know what we think, tell us your opinion. Did you watch the Academy Awards last night? Who wins your choice for best-dressed? Any looks you didn’t like? Be sure to leave a comment and let us know your thoughts!

I completely agree with your choices of Jennifer Lawrence and Mila Kunis for best dressed! They both looked amazing last night. I didn’t love Reese’s look as much – my sister commented that her gown looked like a bridesmaid’s dress and I have to agree. Her hair did look great though. And I’m surprised Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t here because I thought she looked stunning last night!

I also agree with Melissa Leo as the worst-dressed. What was she thinking? Another worst-dressed pick for me was Marisa Tomei.

    Great post!

Melissa Leo’s gown looked like those paper snowflakes you would make in the third grade but what was also a miss for me was probably natalie portman and her earrings. Those purple tassles were so annoying that when she was being interviewed by Robin all I could think about was, “You know? That looks like something my cat would play with *searches around* that’s right I don’t have a cat”

    Halle Berry rocked that dress!

The tulle ruffles are fantastic, and the creamy color really made her skin glow.

    Awesome post :)

I have to say that my absolute favorite was Mila Kunis. I remember texting all my friends just to tell them how I thought Mila looked gorgeous. Everything from the dress to the hair and make up was completely amazing. I just loved her look last night! Btw I just loveee this website :)

I have to disagree pretty heartily – Reese Witherspoon, though I adore her, chose a gown that peaked in 2003, when it was the prom dress of 50% of high school seniors & the bridesmaids’ dress at 60% of suburban weddings. I have seen this dress EVERYWHERE, including on myself seven years ago, & don’t think it needs a revival, particularly by one of the prettiest stars in Hollywood. And Mila Kunis’s gown? Made her look like a hooker. Period. I’d have swapped their spots on this list for Halle Berry & Cate Blanchett, no question.

My choices for best dressed are Mila Kunis, Hailee Steinfeld, and Anne Hathaway. I’m shocked you don’t have the red Valentino dress she wore on the red carpet on this list! I thought it was gorgeous and I was so disappointed that she changed before the start of the show.

Even after reading the editor’s note, I have to disagree…I know it took guts to wear that dress, but I thought Cate Blanchett’s dress was pretty bad. Ergo Reese Witherspoon, and Jennifer Laurence’s dress is a snooze. Melissa Leo…yeah…the best thing was probably her f-bomb…

I love Mila Kunis’s gown! The color and lace are gorgeous.

I don’t think I would’ve liked Mila’s dress if it was in any color other than lavender; it had the potential to end up looking far more skanky, but it was elegant and beautiful.

    February 28th, 2011 at 12:13 pm

I adored Mila Kunis, Halle Berry, and Amy Adams. Other than that I was not very impressed by the gowns this time! Although Natalie Portman is still obviously looking great for a pregnant lady!

    February 28th, 2011 at 12:46 pm

Natalie Portman’s dress was boring, she can do much better. Scarlett Johansson looked somewhat like a carpet. In general, not many cool dresses at this year’s award ceremony. I know Jennifer Lawrence is supposed to have this minimalistic awesome dress, but she just looks kinda plain for such a big ceremony.
I really liked the dress that Matthew McConaughey’s gf (wife? not sure) was wearing, and I thought Halle Berry and Sandra Bullock had awesome dresses too..but just my opinion

  12. 12
    February 28th, 2011 at 12:47 pm

I don’t like the first dress. It seems way too boring for the oscars. Why wear that when you could wear something as glamorous as the other looks? I also haaaate scarlett’s dress. That pattern looks so much like the elastic flower pattern that victoria’s secret uses on 3/$25 panties just stretched across her whole body.

Love everyone else though. Especially Hailee! That dress is soooo adorable and appropriate for her with the tea length and poofy-ness! I don’t think it would look as good on an older actress.

  13. 13
    February 28th, 2011 at 12:48 pm

Reese’s dress looks like a dress that Julia Roberts wore years ago (to the Oscars, I believe) and Jennifer Lawrences’s dress looks like one that Scarlett Johansson has worn. They both looked great, but the dresses are way too familiar looking.

  14. 14
    February 28th, 2011 at 1:08 pm

Melissa Leo’s dress reminded me of some wedding dresses I’ve been seeing lately. I didn’t hate it, though she’s not on the top of my favourites list.

  15. 15
    February 28th, 2011 at 1:34 pm

I loved Reese’s dress, and I love that she can pull off some unusual things, but the height and volume of her ponytail made her look like Barbie. It was a beautiful look overall, but I couldn’t but help think about the doll every time I saw her.

  16. 16
    February 28th, 2011 at 1:50 pm

I loved Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank, and Halle Berry. They stood out so much with really beautiful, unconventional dresses. I actually didn’t like Reese Witherspoon’s dress very much. It was just a little too plain and boring.

    February 28th, 2011 at 2:21 pm

I think everyone played it really safe at this year’s Oscars! My best dressed would probably be Natalie. Mila’s dress is gorgeous, but it isn’t as pretty as I remembered it last night. Swank looked great, which I almost never say about her. I think since her dress was in neutrals, it worked. Jennifer Lawrence looked stunning, even though I’m not a fan of the minimalist trend, she looked like a bombshell. Hailee looked adorable. I really love Reese’s retro-inspired look, but it reminded me of something to wear to the Globes, not the Oscars.

ScarJo’s hair was just a mess. Not cute. And Melissa Leo, I feel like I’ve already seen her in that. Halle Berry wore a similar dress to the Oscars years ago ( Obviously it’s different, but that was the first image that popped into my head.

You should break down all of Anne Hathaway’s looks! She wore so many different gowns I couldn’t keep up!

  18. 18
    February 28th, 2011 at 2:26 pm

I hated scarlet’s look over all! She looked like a mess! The red just didn’t go with her skin tone, her hair was disheveled, and her makeup looks dirty and high in some pictures. I also thought her dress looked a little on the trash side.

I thought mila kunis was for sure a best dressed contender. And I was surprised you didn’t include gweneth paltrow’s Calvin Klein or nicole kidman’s dress. They both looked absolutely stunning

  19. 19
    February 28th, 2011 at 2:41 pm

I have to say, Reese Witherspoon looked like evening gown Barbie from the 60’s as soon as she came out, I couldn’t get that image out of my head.

I also thought Cate Blanchett looked like she was wearing a chair cover. Over all I was underwhelmed

  20. 20
    February 28th, 2011 at 3:29 pm

I didnt like ScarJo’s look at all, but I really liked Natalie Portman’s and Anne Hathaway’s white dress she wore later on.

  21. 21
    February 28th, 2011 at 3:51 pm

I have to disagree. I didn’t like Mila Kunis’ dress, I thought it was too reveling. I think if the sides were covered I would have liked the dress a whole lot more but I think she looked underdressed (I mean, it’s the Oscars, come on!)
And Marisa Tomei’s gown was beautiful and classic, I loved hers

  22. 22
    February 28th, 2011 at 4:29 pm

    Natalie Portman’s dress was boring.

  23. 23
    February 28th, 2011 at 4:53 pm

hailee steinfeld pretty much blew everyone out of the water (and she’s 14!). i agree with what some of the other people said…. everyone was pretty safe/boring this year. i also have to say that i hate reese witherspoon’s dress…. BARF (and her hair was super 90s).

  24. 24
    February 28th, 2011 at 4:54 pm

i have to disagree with melissa leo being worst dressed. she actually looked great on stage and the dress really complimented her golden skin tone, i hated jennifer lawrence`s dress though, it looks like some maxi dress from forever 21!

  25. 25
    February 28th, 2011 at 5:12 pm

Cate’s dress was by far the best. She pulled off Givenchy extremely well

    everyone else was boring

  26. 26
    February 28th, 2011 at 5:33 pm

Hailee Steinfeld looked absolutely gorgeous. My new idol. <3 <3 <3

  27. 27
    February 28th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

I don’t like Jennifer Lawrence’s dress at all. It looks like a tank top/maxidress. Sandra Bullock killed it in red at the Oscars. I really liked Scarlett Johannson’s though – very unique.

  28. 28
    February 28th, 2011 at 6:44 pm

i loved mandy moores dresses! cant belive no one mentioned them, the sparkley one was my favorite but the blue one she wore on stage was gorgeous too.
    lovee mila’s, natalie’s and hailee berry’s dresses
and hailee stienfeld is too cutee, her dress was stunning and completely age appropriate.
buttttt i have to say that i hate cate blanchett’s dress.

  29. 29
    February 28th, 2011 at 8:28 pm

Jennifer Lawrence was my absolute favorite look of the evening! Her dress reminded me a lot of Scarlett Johanssons a few years back-or am I the only one who thinks so? lol:p

    February 28th, 2011 at 8:36 pm

I definitely had a prom dress similar to Reese Witherspoon’s dress in 2005!

Both Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis looked amazing.

  31. 31
    February 28th, 2011 at 10:31 pm

How is Amy Adams not on here?

  32. 32
    February 28th, 2011 at 10:56 pm

i loved mila’s dress, totally. Everything was great from texture to colour, her hair, make over….wow Perfection..!!
I also liked hailee, natalie, nicole kidman’ s gown. I can’t believe kidman is not mentioned here.
And please do another post for anne hathaway’s gowns…they were are stunning..

  33. 33
    February 28th, 2011 at 11:34 pm

Mila’s dress is simply gorgeous–definitely my favorite of the night!

    February 28th, 2011 at 11:44 pm

I agree with basically everything you said here, you have a good eye here. My only suggestion is that next time you write posts like this use “Most fave” and “Least fave” like Stacy London since it’s your personal opinion and doesn’t sound as harsh.

No waaaay…LOVED melissa leo….so classy and unique, and the lace wasn’t overdone. reese witherspoon though? UGH love her but hated her look. BORING. and props to mah girls from black swan!

I *loved* Jennifer Lawrence’s dress – I thought that the simplicity was beautiful, and it was very flattering as well. I also loved Hailee Steinfield’s dress – she looked adorable and age appropriate.

I agree, I also liked Amy Adams’ dress (which was sadly not mentioned). :/

Halle Berry wore the Elie Saab dress two weeks ago in a better colour, and it looked less hookerish on her than it did on Mila:

  38. 38
    March 1st, 2011 at 12:26 pm

I am surprised that no one mentioned that beautiful vintage dress that Marissa Tomei wore! That was the best dress of the night, I dont care what anyone says!

i love mila kunis’s dress .the colour was great . evereything about it really .

Halle Berry looks fierce! I like the dress, but I LOVE her attitude!

I disagree about Jennifer Lawrence’s dress (I don’t even know who she is). It is WAY too low-cut for a formal event and it makes her look slutty. Cate Blanchett just picked a weird dress, though I applaud her for making a bold decision. Scarlett Johansson, with the nasty makeup and cut-up dress, also looks like a hooker.

  42. 42
    March 2nd, 2011 at 6:00 pm

I agree with Kelsey. Where’s Jennifer Hudson! I normally despise orange but her dress was stunning and she looks amazing!

  43. 43
    March 4th, 2011 at 2:02 am

im sorry but the worst dressed was Kathryn Bigelow…she looked like a hippie…

  44. 44
    March 4th, 2011 at 2:03 am

and the best were michelle williams and anne hathaway” they looked gorgeuous and super classy!

  45. 45
    March 6th, 2011 at 5:32 am

Scarlet Jo may be on trend but that dress was shameful.

Hillary Swank looked UHmazing. She’s finally branching out and is doing smething other than the backless. She looks great. Mila Kunis as well, georgous.

  46. 46
    March 9th, 2011 at 7:18 am

Whoa! Halle berry really looked great.Reese and Hilary looked gorgeous too.

But what was Melissa Leo thinking when she got that gown?
That gown looked horrible…(especially for a red carpet event).Oops its way past the 60’s lady.

  47. 47
    March 23rd, 2011 at 12:30 am

Cate Blanchett’s dress was absolutely amazing! she never fails to look stunning. I loved the color and the details on her dress and her hair and makeup were so effortlessly gorgeous. She takes me breath away.
Mila kunis was a close second, loved the lavender lace :)

i wasnt really a fan of reese’s look or anne’s red dress. I just didnt like all the volume on her shoulder, I thought it was really distracting.
