Fashion Recap: 2010 Academy Awards Red Carpet

As I’m sure all of you know, the 2010 Academy Awards were last night, and, as always, we now have tons of great fashion to discuss. Here are the most notable red carpet looks of the night, as well as my picks for the best-dressed and worst-dressed celebs.

Top 5 Best-Dressed

Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab Haute Couture

Although she was just a presenter at the awards, Rachel McAdams definitely wins as my pick for best-dressed of the night. Her tie-dye printed Elie Saab gown was not only a fresh change from what everyone else at the Oscars was wearing, but was also incredibly flattering on her. It’s not always easy to pull off patterns on the red carpet, but Rachel absolutely killed it.

Sandra Bullock in Marchesa

It was truly Sandra’s night, and she took home the Best Actress award looking like one of the statues herself. Her glittering metallic Marchesa gown was so classic – the perfect choice for a night she’ll look back on forever.

Carey Mulligan in Prada

Best Actress nominee Carey Mulligan rocked this nontraditional Prada gown with bold accessories while looking flawless from head-to-toe. Look closely at the detail of the gown – it’s covered in mini knives and forks! Overall, it was a hip, fun choice for a talented young actress.

Demi Moore in Atelier Versace

Some people just do NOT seem to age, and Demi Moore is one of them. She was stunning in a peach Versace gown that fit her like a glove and made her skin glow.

Amanda Seyfried in Armani Privé

Amanda Seyfried is another example of a gorgeous young actress who knows how to dress! She looked age-appropriate and beautiful in a sparkling princess dress by Armani Privé.

Love it or Hate it?

There were a few dresses that were totally polarizing – you either loved them or hated them, there was no in-between!

Zoe Saldana in Givenchy

While you have to hand it to Zoe for taking a risk, was her Givenchy dress “too much”? Personally, I thought the color made her skin glow and I was happy to see a bold choice on the red carpet – it seemed like most stars played it safe last night. That said, I can totally see why some people hated it – the bottom definitely is a little much! What do you think?

Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel Haute Couture

Everyone was talking about SJP’s lemon Chanel gown last night – it was most definitely a “love it or hate it” look. While I have to admit that the gown embodies everything I usually dislike in a dress, I thought it somehow worked for her. SJP can pull anything off, and when you have Karl Lagerfeld on your side, you can’t go too wrong.

Other Notable Looks

There were so many fabulous looks on the carpet last night – it’s impossible to talk about them all! That said, here are a few more looks that had people talking. Which one is your favorite?

Worst-Dressed

Sadly, for every best-dressed celeb at an awards show, there is a fashion disaster to balance things out. Here are my picks for the two worst-dressed celebrities at the Academy Awards.

Charlize Theron in Christian Dior Couture

My pick for worst-dressed celeb at the Academy Awards was definitely Charlize Theron. While I normally love her style, this dress just was not working for her, and was inappropriate for the event. While the strategically placed rosettes on her chest might have worked in a tongue-in-cheek way at a fashion function, the overall “look at my boobs” effect was way too much for the Oscars.

82ND ACADEMY AWARDS, RED CARPET ARRIVALS82nd Annual Academy Awards - Arrivals

Miley Cyrus in Jenny Packham

While I like Miley, the overall look of the dress and hair was too old for her – it’s easy to forget she’s only 17! Had the dress been a different color, it might have worked, but the nude shade made the corset top look like accidentally-exposed underwear! It was not exactly the most flattering look.

i basically agree…except for your miley opinion!

while i don’t like miley cyrus, i have to admit that i loved her dress. yes, it may have been a little grown-up, but it was still gorgeous.

    March 8th, 2010 at 12:34 pm

I loved the bottom half of Miley’s dress – the top just looked awkward to me, too underwear-ish for a 17 year old at a formal event. But I do totally see what’s likeable about it! Who was your best-dressed pick?

I think I would have liked Miley’s dress a lot more if she had stood up straight and owned the look. Her posture made her look kind of uncomfortable, which definitely took away from the whole look.

As for the other looks, I have to say Cameron Diaz was my favorite. She looked the best she has ever looked on the red carpet; it was fabulous.

    March 8th, 2010 at 12:43 pm

I also loved Kristen Stewart’s dress.

Miley looks ever worse with the horrible posture she has and the top looks totally like exposed underwear.

I really dislike Zoe’s and SJP’s, can’t see the appeal at all.

I also though Kate Winslet looked amazing.

    March 8th, 2010 at 1:07 pm

I think Zoe Saldana’s dress is a bit too much. I didn’t like it on the runway either.

And btw Charlize Theron’s dress is from the Christian Dior Spring 2010 Couture collection :)

I would have to agree Rachel had a unique dress an went for something different the spalsh of watercolor was a nice touch Elle Sabb did another dress that was out of the crowd. I love love Demi dress the color an cut was fantastic

i’m afraid i completely disagree with your choices, miley looked absolutely stunning and her dress was gorgeous

NemAndrea – Thanks for letting me know! The Associated Press said it was Vera Wang, but I looked it up and you’re correct, it’s Dior!

Mariah Carey should be up there for ‘worst dressed’. Her outfit was totally inappropriate for the Oscars! Then again, I wasn’t surprised…

Zoe Saldana…..?? What was she thinking? The top is lovely! Loose the ruffles and it would be fabulous! I even like the dip-dye effect around the bottom! Just the ruffles are too much!
She glows in the colour though, credit given where its due.

Miley’s dress is so wrong for her…maybe if it were more pink than nude? But her horrible posture and shoulder structure does not help!

Queen Latifa looked amazing in that dress, hands down.

SJP looks like she’s wearing a bedazzled potato sack.

I sort of like Zoe’s dress in a strange way…maybe the ruffles at the bottom over-did it, but from the waist up I think that color and shape looks great on her.

  13. 13
    March 8th, 2010 at 1:35 pm

Oh, and may I also add Penelope Cruz for best dressed? The color red does wonders on her!

  14. 14
    March 8th, 2010 at 2:02 pm

The worst part of Miley’s outfit was her posture! Like someone else said, she could have owned that dress but she just looked uncomfortable. Although I would be uncomfortable too if I had forgotten to put a shirt on and was walking around in my undergarments. The bottom of her dress was beautiful but the top looked unfinished.

    March 8th, 2010 at 2:22 pm

I totally agree with you about Sandra Bullock. I love her and I love her dress and I love that she won for Best Actress! I loved her acceptance speech- It seemed so heartfelt and she definitely looked like an Academy Award herself!

The texture on Amanda Seyfried’s dress seemed a little strange to me. Granted the best look I got was in pictures, but still!

  16. 16
    March 8th, 2010 at 2:37 pm

NOOO! I don’t even like Miley, and I have to admit that her dress was my favorite dress by far. It was AMAZING! So was JLo’s, Queen Latifah’s and Amanda Seyfried’s. However, I did NOT like Sandra Bullock’s. Even her makeup was ugly.

  17. 17
    March 8th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

Miley doesn’t dress for her age, she has many thins to learn about Emma Watson, who is a young fashion icon!!! I love Cameron’s outfit, for me it’s the best :-D

I liked the dress Sarah Jessica Parker wore! On anyone else though… Probably not. Rachel McAdams’s dress was probably one of my top favorites too! Charlize Theron’s dress was just baffling. Who would want to look like they’re wearing an unflattering bra over the outside of their dress? Aaannnyywaayyy… Great post!! :)

  20. 20
    March 8th, 2010 at 3:10 pm

I LOVED Anna Kendrick’s dress.. people kept saying that the color was bad but I thought it was lovely on her and any other colors would’ve looked strange.

  21. 21
    March 8th, 2010 at 3:17 pm

I agree with the best dressed minus Amanda Seyfried. I really like her but I don’t think that dress showed her great figure like it could have.

Rachel McAdams, Kristen Stewart, Demi Moore and Anna Kendrick were my best dressed.

Demi looked absolutely stunning. I also like Sandra’s too, but I’m not sure about the whole look. I like the hair and the dress, but not so much the makeup.

  22. 22
    March 8th, 2010 at 3:26 pm

I think my favorite was Anna Kendrick. I really dislike Rachel McAdams’ dress, it reminds me of cheap hotel bedding.

  23. 23
    March 8th, 2010 at 3:41 pm

first of all:i loved anna kendrick’s dress, it was gorgeous, and her hair&make up… perfect
i also liked demi moore’s and i totally agree about miley&charlize…. uhhh

  24. 24
    March 8th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Rachel McAdams gown was just breathtaking, she wins my vote for best dressed! I actually liked Mileys dress, just not on her. It would have looked better on someone who was older, deffently not a seventeen year old!

  25. 25
    March 8th, 2010 at 4:27 pm

I’m not a big fan of Miley, but i thought her dress was stunning. I love the top unlike most who have commented on this, i just love the vintage 50′s feel. I also love how the top and bottom contrast. I think she looked gorgeous.

  26. 26
    March 8th, 2010 at 4:57 pm

I agree with the Rachel McAdams choice. She looked absolutely gorgeous! However I think my biggest disappointment of the night was Diane Krugers dress. She always looks so gorgeous but that puff thing in the middle was not working. I liked the bottom of Miley’s dress but hated her hair and bad posture. :)

  27. 27
    March 8th, 2010 at 5:38 pm

    The dress is fab.

  28. 28
    March 8th, 2010 at 6:09 pm

My two best dressed were 1) Penelope Cruz 2) and 3) Rachel McAdams.

For me, Sandra Bullock’s dress was a little too much like the Oscar statue. I guess you could go either way.. its too fab or too wrong! I didnt like her hair.. I think that when your dress is already embroidered or very adorned on the top, your hair should be up! So a nice and simple bun would have worked much better in my opinion.

Amanda Seyfried looked like a princess, she’d be my number 4! :)

  29. 29
    March 8th, 2010 at 6:12 pm

haha wow my post is off with the numbers.. it was my three best dressed, and i forgot about Cameron Diaz! who is my number 2

  30. 30
    March 8th, 2010 at 6:14 pm

I think you missed Kristen Stewart and Penelope Cruz. I liked them both and think they look great.

  31. 31
    March 8th, 2010 at 6:50 pm

I completely adored Miley’s dress, and loved that she didn’t go for the mini- look! It deserves an ‘A’ for sure!

  32. 32
    March 8th, 2010 at 6:54 pm

I absolutely loved the gown Carey Mulligan wore last night, and I think your best dressed list is spot on. Personally, I think SJP looked awful as a whole last night, and I normally think she looks very beautiful. The dress and the orange skin really didn’t compliment her overally appearance. I don’t think Charlize’s dress was ugly either.

  33. 33
    March 8th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Cameron Diaz’s dress was something I would kill to wear- it’s something that I think is completely Oscar appropriate.
I think Miley’s dress was nice, but I think there’ s just something really unflattering about the top of the dress. Either it’s her posture, or just the shiney-ness of the fabric, but I just don’t think the top was that flattering. The bottom half was lovely, however.
SJP’s dress was just plain awkward, however, I disagree with you about Charlize Theron’s dress. Yes, it’s slightly trashy, but in a classy way (not sure if that makes any sense, but I honestly didn’t think her dress was that bad.

  34. 34
    March 8th, 2010 at 7:39 pm

I loooooved zoe’s dress. I saw it for the first time when my roomie switched to the oscars, while she was on stage giving away awards. It was beautiful! absolutely stunning. i understand how it could be a little much but i thought it was stunning

  35. 35
    March 8th, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Anna Kendrick and Carey Mulligan <3 I love those two girls! Cameron and Amanda looked GORGEOUS too! I thought Kristen Stewart looked nice too! I do like Miley's dress … just not the top part on her, she REALLY needs to find a balance for dressing her age. If atleast she would have stood up straight for Pete's sake!

  36. 36
    March 8th, 2010 at 8:34 pm

awwww I love miley cyrus, but you’re right, that dress was funny and her posture was so distracting! I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that she wore something questionable for the publicity though…she does have a movie coming out soon :)

    rachel mcadams, ohh and j.lo….divine!

  37. 37
    March 8th, 2010 at 8:36 pm

I loved Sandra Bullock’s dress, she was dressed to win. Miley’s dress wouldn’t have been so bad if her posture was better, just shows you if you stand tall you look better.

  38. 38
    March 8th, 2010 at 8:45 pm

Nobody’s mentioned Gabby Sidibe yet? I loved the deep blue color and thought the draping and the understated yet glittery flowers on the bodice were perfect. Ditto for Vera Farmiga and her fuschia ruffled gown– amazing color, great attention to detail. Marchesa makes such beautiful goddess-y gowns. They were the two stand-outs of the night, in my opinion.

  39. 39
    March 8th, 2010 at 8:51 pm

I loved Miley’s dress! I much prefer a too grown up look to her normal way too trendy shredded jeans and fringe boots.

My favorites were Rachel McAdams, Miley, Zoe Saldana, and Christina Hendricks.

  40. 40
    March 8th, 2010 at 9:47 pm

rachel mcadams was my best dressed!
followed directly by anna kendrick – cant believe she wasnt on your list
and same goes to penelope cruz -she looked amazing.
andd sandra bullock was absolutely gorgouse last night!! it wasnt definitley her night!

  41. 41
    March 8th, 2010 at 9:53 pm

I loved Rachel’s Elie Saab! Besides, everything about her was flawless last night, from her dress to her hair and makeup. Cute earings too!
Miley looks like a girl playing with her mom’s clothes… so sad, because she’s so pretty! I don’t get why it’s so hard for her to look age-appropiate.
Personally, I’d count Maggie Gyllenhaal on the Worst-Dressed list. I didn’t like the pattern of the dress and I think it was very unflattering for her body type. Besides, her face looks so clown-ish it hides her natural beauty.
I would count Cameron Diaz on the Best-Dressed list. She looked amazing, glowing and stunning!
    That’s my opinion :)

  42. 42
    March 8th, 2010 at 10:15 pm

I agree with your top picks!!! LOVE Amanda Seyfried’s and Demi Moore’s dresses! With regards to SJP’s outfit, I think it’s one of those dresses that only her or Carrie Bradshaw can pull off. I’m bound to hate it on another person’s body but somehow I like it on her.

J Lo’s gown is pretty… for a bridal. Maybe I’ll keep it in file (when the big day comes for me)

I don’t mind Miley’s dress but I think the things that ruined it are her posture and the way it was styled. Had she worn her hair down in soft tousled curls, I think it would have worked more for her.

  43. 43
    March 8th, 2010 at 10:20 pm

I love Miley’s dress except for the top. The textures were too different. My biggest problem with her is her posture. I mean, come on, stand up straight.

  44. 44
    March 8th, 2010 at 10:50 pm

Sandra Bullock and Penelope Cruz were my favorite! i disagree with Carey Mulligan’s outfit. I like the dress a lot, I just don’t think that the shoes are right on that length of dress, they make her legs way too stumpy-looking

  45. 45
    March 8th, 2010 at 10:58 pm

Sandra Bullock and Penelope Cruz were my favorites! They truly looked like the movie stars that they are.
The only thing on the list that I disagree with is Carey Mulligan, I like the dress but I do not like the shoes with it; the length of the dress along with the ankle straps of the shoes made her legs look really short. Other than that, i loved nearly all the dresses last night!

  46. 46
    March 8th, 2010 at 11:03 pm

These dresses were all soo cute :) I appreciate the ladies who took a risk like SJP, I reallllly thought the dress worked for her. It was darling, but laidback at the same time. I’m not sure about Amanda Seyfried’s does anybody think it looks like a wedding dress? I’m bummed there were no shorter dresses, they’re always so fun.
PS Carey Mulligan looked fab, i think she’s my favourite :D so hip.

  47. 47
    March 8th, 2010 at 11:29 pm

I really disliked Demi Moore’s dress, everything from the color to the cut. As for another gown I did not like was Sarah Jessica Parker’s. Chanel is absolutely one of my favorite designers but I can admit as a loyal admirer that there are some questionable pieces. Maybe I just need to look at the dress again at another time.

On another note, I love Zoe Saldana’s dress. It was one of my favorite from Givenchy, I wish more actresses had taken a risk like her. Other favorites, Sandra Bullock’s, Maggie Gylenhaal and Miley Cyrus.
I actually think what Cyrus was wearing made her look very elegant and graceful. The look definentley wasn’t too old for her-unlike last year she really toned it down and looks phenomenal.

I’m surprised nothing was posted on Diane Kruger. She usually looks beautiful in everything and had a great eye for style-but this was not her best look.

  48. 48
    March 9th, 2010 at 1:41 am

I love miley cyrus and I think she’s incredible…. but hated that dress. The top looked funky. The dress I adored most was Maggie Gyllenhaal’s! The floral was just amazing on her!

  49. 49
    March 9th, 2010 at 3:08 am

I’m glad you covered the red carpet, I didn’t get a chance to watch the Academy Awards.

My best dressed pick is Demi Moore, she really did look like she was glowing and very beautiful in her dress. Other notables, Cameron Diaz was stunning!

Miley is always with a gorgeous dress and is always slouching… looks really bad

  51. 51

    Best Dressed:
    1. Carey Mulligan (the detailing on her dress and the earrings were absolutely gorgeous!)
    2. Anna Kendrick
    3. Rachel McAdams
    4. Demi Moore
    5. Penelopé Cruz

    Worst Dressed:
    1. Charlize Theron
    2. Zoe Saladana
    3. SJP

I think more than the dress itself, the problem is in the way miley cyrus is carrying it….. she doesn’t look comfortable or confident.. Although it was a HUGE improvement from the fail Zuhair Murad she wore last year

I agree with Rachel Mcadams her dress was beautiful but I also LOVED JLo’s dress it was spectacular and really emphasiszed her curves. I really loved Miley’s dress but she was too young to pull it off (much like the dress she wore last year) and she has horrible posture, the same goes for kristin stewart, beautiful dress, horrible posture neither of them have any sense of elegance.
I also adored Anna Kendrick’s dress, the colour and draping made it so flattering and really feminine.

  54. 54
    March 9th, 2010 at 8:32 am

best dressed for me… SAndra Bullock! it was definitly her night!
    but… c’mon Zoe Saldana…What were you thinking!
    Miley Cyrs…don’t Slouch in couture!!!!!!!
and Sarah Jessica Parker really let me down… it was such an unflattering gown…

    March 9th, 2010 at 10:47 am

    In my Opinion -
    Best Dress
    1. Anna Kendrick
(The dress fit her body perfectly && the shade went perfectly with her skin)
    2. Rachel McAdams
(The dress was absolutely beautiful I agree with you 100%)
    3. Penelope Cruz
    4. Cameron Diaz
    5.Sandra Bullock
(honestly I dont see what the big hype was about her dress..Yes it’s pretty but not the best in my opinion)

    Worst Dress -
    1.Sara Jessica Parker
    2.Maggie Gyllenhaal
(Can her dress get any brighter..it looked like she was going on vacation to Hawaii xD)
    3.Charlize Theron
(It looks like a fake barbie dress)
    4. Zoe Saldana
    5. Miley Cyrus
(At first I thought that Miley had one of the best dresses for sure..but then again I do realize how it does look like some type of underwear at the top && her slouching doesn’t make it any better. But other than that the bottom have is really pretty :) But I still ? u Miley

  56. 56
    March 9th, 2010 at 11:43 am

I’m so happy you included Sandra Bullock in your top 5…a lot of other sites have her as a worst dressed listee! I absolutely loved her dress!

Also- To me, Miley Cyrus looked like she was going to the prom. She also needs to learn how to pose and carry herself on the red carpet. She looks like an awkward teenager. I know she is only 17, but there are other actors and actresses in Hollywood her age who know how to present themselves.

  57. 57
    March 9th, 2010 at 1:05 pm

I loved Cameron Diaz’s dress, I think she looked great! I personally thought J.Lo’s dress was better than Amanda Seyfried’s (since they were from the same collection). I also was not a fan of Carey Mulligan’s dress, I dislike how it was shorter in the front than in the back. I really liked Miley’s dress, but like many other CF readers, I agree that her posture ruined it.

  58. 58
    March 9th, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Finally ! Someone actually noticed that Rachel McAdams was the best dressed at the Academy Awards. I thought she was gorgeous !
But I’d have put Cameron Diaz on the best dressed list too.

  59. 59
    March 9th, 2010 at 3:16 pm

I definitely agree that Rachel McAdams was the best dressed of the night! I haven’t seen anyone else mention this, but I also loved Vera Farmiga’s dress… however, that could be due to my deep love and obsession with ruffles haha

  60. 60
    March 9th, 2010 at 5:24 pm

I would not choose Carey Mulligan as one of the best dressed at all instead I would pick Cameron Diaz, she looks stunning!

I like Miley Cyrus’ dress but her hairstyle doesn’t fit. Besides I agree with Taryn her posture was terrible.

  61. 61
    March 10th, 2010 at 1:39 am

i think Sandra Bullock, Cameron Diaz, Rachelle McAdams, Queen Latifa and Miley Cyrus looked beautiful at the oscars. and stunning. I like Mileys outfit is has a glamorous rock feeling I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My favourites were Demi Moore, Cameron Diaz and Carrie Mulligan (:
the mini knives and forks thing was so awesome!
i was starting to think nude tones were overworked as a trend, but Demi looks fresh and classic
i’m not really the one for wild fashion, but carrie’s dress was beautiful
i think that amanda seyfried should have worn a dress similar to demi moores but shorter and in a rose tone.. i would die for her skin tone !

After a while this whole phenomenon of scrutinizing celebrities’ sartorial choices seems very fake. It distracts us from the what’s really important. The films. Regardless, I thought Carey Mulligan looked lovely (I don’t care what Joan Rivers says). And Zoe Saldana shouldn’t be on the worst dressed list. Her dress redefined red carpet dresses. It was incredible. Meryl Streep also looked phenomenal. I want to be her when I’m however old she is. And Charlize’s dress would have worked with a different hairstyle, different makeup and different accessories. The dress itself was lovely.

I agree that Miley Cyrus’s appearance on Oscars Night was grotesque. She looked like she might popped out of the dress anytime.

As for the best dress, Amanda Seyfriend gives every girl’s Cinderella dream comes true

SJP’s dress is the most horrendous looking in terms of silhouette. So is Zoe Saldana’s duster bottom.

JLo deserves to be in the top 5. And my personal favorite is Cameron Diaz – who doesn’t love some spark?
