Anna Sui for Target: No Longer Gossip Girl Themed? Or Still On?

Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl has an on-again, off-again relationship, and this time we’re not talking about Blair and Chuck. There’s been a lot of talk about what’s going on between Target and Gossip Girl concerning Anna Sui’s new line for the retail giant. Read on for all the drama…

Anna Sui for Target: No Longer Gossip Girl Themed?

You guys got a preview of the Gossip Girl-inspired Anna Sui for Target line here about a week ago, but now rumors are flying that it may not be Gossip Girl themed anymore. Apparently, people are saying Target execs have decided to cancel the collection’s affiliation with Gossip Girl. Why? Because the people at Target think Gossip Girl is too “risque” to be associated with their brand.

The New York Daily News reported yesterday: “‘One of Target’s top executives got nervous about being that closely associated with the show, given the [debauchery] its characters get into,’ says an on-the-set source. For example, Blake Lively’s character, Serena, killed a man, and most of the characters frequently get wasted, do drugs and have promiscuous sex.”

Apparently, the Gossip Girl cast was supposed to shoot a scene at Anna Sui’s SoHo store last Tuesday. Models in the background were going to be wearing the Anna Sui for Target collection, Target’s logo was going to appear, and Anna herself was even set to make a cameo! According to the NYDN, however, Target pulled out at the very last second, much to the annoyance of the Gossip Girl crew who had to scrap the entire scene and start over.

According to the NYDN’s unnamed source, the people at Gossip Girl “can’t believe Target would bail on them, especially after publicly announcing the collaboration. It’s Target’s loss, because the line would have sold better if it had played a part in the show.”

Or Still On?

However, other sources are saying the New York Daily News got it wrong:

A Target spokesperson told Hollywood Crush earlier today that the NYDN’s claims are not true. “That article is a fabrication,” the Target spokesperson said. “The collection is moving forward as always intended. We’re continuing to work with The CW and ‘Gossip Girl,’ and the four main characters will continue to serve as the muses for the Anna Sui for Target collection.” Hollywood Crush also says “Target will be sponsoring the season premiere of the show, and the official Anna Sui for Target commercial will make its debut during that same hour.”

So who knows! Maybe the collaboration is still happening, or maybe Gossip Girl is too hot for retail. Only time will tell! I’ll keep you guys updated with the latest on this collection as it unfolds.

Your Thoughts?

What do you think about all of this? I know some of you thought the collection wasn’t true to the Gossip Girl characters, so are you happy that they may be scrapping the Gossip Girl affiliation? Do you think Gossip Girl is too risque to be associated with a clothing line?

Let me know your thoughts on this in the comments section!

I’m really excited for this collection. Some of the designs didn’t make sense to me for the characters. However, overall, I think it’s a good collection. I really could see Blair Waldorf wearing all the dresses that Anna Sui designed.

Jessica Szohr was even out wearing one of the Blair designs! I just saw it over on In Style.

I’m pretty sure I’m hoping that the GG theme is still on. Although a relatively risque television program, that does seem to be the way that things are going for modern young ladies. Even if the so-called “affiliation” is scrapped, many of the designs were practical, as well as tasteful and pretty. I hope it’s still put in stores. Even though I’m a Canadian resident, I’d make the trip to the US just to visit a target store!!

I didn’t think the clothing was very Gossip Girl-esque to begin with, and definitly not as impressive as Anna Sui normally pulls off, though the clothing was nice anyway.
The article already had a mistake, Serena never killed anyone and it was proven in the show, so that immediately makes ME believe it isn’t reliable. Personally I think the clothing would be more suited for a store such as H&M
(and that way I would have access to it), but I’m not familiar with Target’s clothing to begin with.

I think it’s a great idea for Target to do a collaboration with Gossip Girl. Gossip Girl is hot right now and they should take advantage of this opportunity. I don’t find it too risque for Target since the clothing looks tasteful and well designed. The characters on the show live a rich and glamorous lifestyle with a fab since of style so who wouldn’t want to dress like the characters. I sorta agree with Jennifer about the clothing being more suited for stores like H&M. Initially I thought it was odd and was quite shocked to hear Target taking the Anna Sui line since they aren’t known to carry high-end designers; however, it’s quite genius on their part.

I agree with everyone above me!

And i really really really hope that the line is still gossip girl themed!

They may be risque, but you can’t deny they’ve got style. I agree with the GG reps – it’s Target’s loss.

Hm interesting story. Me personally – I wouldn’t buy a dress that I don’t like or doesn’t fit me well only because it is a “Gossip Girl” style. But I love the show!

I don’t think Target would be THAT unprofessional and “drop out at the last minute” after all that planning. There’s definitely a demand for the GG line, and a huge buzz about it, so it wouldn’t make sense for them not to follow through.

I definitely hope they do it though! I need to steal Blair’s clothes…it might even be worth the trip to Brooklyn (snickers).

I’m pretty sure Anna Sui toned down the outfits specifically as collaborated with Target. The “off-ness” of the wardrobe speaks for itself. The characters’ styles are so unmistakably distinct that no way a professional designer like Anna Sui can get it wrong. The line is a compromise between Sui and Target: ready-wear for real life teenagers, not scandalous cleavage baring extravagance for children of millionaires.

I really hope Target goes through with the Gossip Girl line. It would be great publicity for them and would be even better if the characters wore clothes from this line on the show. Although I do agree somewhat with Jennifer and hot beauty health. I originally thought a Gossip Girl clothing line would have been better suited for H&M as well. If Target really doesn’t want to go through with it, maybe H&M or another cheaper store will. You never know!

I read an article on a blog that said the Anna Sui for Target collection is actually based on vintage Anna Sui – and it had runway pictures to prove it! Check out your favorite search engine to see for yourself! So for those people who think that the collection isn’t very Gossip Girly, you’re very right.

If Valerie is right, then Gossip Girl should be suing Target and Anna Sui for misuse of its name!

Hmm well whichever store ends up coming out with the line, I can’t wait. Some of the outfits are so adorable!

Ummm Serena didn’t actually kill anyone, she just felt very guilty about not preventing her friend’s death. This is lame.
