Dormspiration: H&M Home

When clothing retailers branch out into the home and lifestyle markets, it’s always fun to compare how the separate collections are similar. H&M’s home collection is every bit as functional and cost-effective as its clothing counterpart, though refreshingly without the über-trendy feeling that some of their clothes exude.

While Target’s Threshold line is on the kitschy and quirky side, H&M’s home products are a little more muted and simple. These items are perfect for graduating from a college dorm room to a real-world apartment (eep!) if you prefer minimalist decor and unobtrusive fabrics.

Another bonus? H&M Home has a wide range of fabrics available, and lets you shop based on whether you’d like cotton, velvet, linen, or shimmery fabrics decorating your space.

Full of neutrals and screen-printed, industrial-inspired artwork, H&M Home is an excellent option for the minimalist collegiate fashionista who wants an effortless, uncomplicated room for cheap. Read on for some H&M Home dormspiration:

Living Room

While H&M hasn’t yet broken into the furniture industry, their living room accessories are easy to mix-and-match with any style of furniture you have on hand. This minimalist gray loveseat from IKEA (only $99!) is a great backdrop for H&M’s bolder pieces.

A library-printed curtain sets the stage for a cozy, mellow living room, while bronze metal storage baskets keep remotes and coffee table magazines corralled without taking up too much visible space. To ensure that this space isn’t taken over by too many dark neutrals, inject a pop of color with this bold printed throw pillow.

In my opinion, H&M Home shines brightest in the bedroom department. Their soft chambrays and homespun textures make for a gorgeously uncomplicated setup that can be easily dressed up or down.

Start with a pale blue chambray duvet cover, which we paired with a beige striped throw that’s perfect for summertime. A bed skirt (this one is a lovely white linen) is a must-have for post-grads – it makes any bed look infinitely more put-together. Finish this room off with a jacquard weave rug in a geometric print.
