Checking ahead is huge. Checking what you can and can't bring. Checking what your dorm will be like (go see it if you can!). And check ahead with your roommate. It's easy if it's your best friend, but checking ahead with a roommate you don't know can prevent you two both showing up with a couch but no minifridge.Speaking of couches (definetly check there will be room for one!)....think of something lightweight, not too expensive (or you will be way too upset when someone spills dip on it), and that can convert into a bed (taking into account the first two things as well, probably a futon). It's nice to have a place where your friends can sleep when they come visit from another school.

In all three of the dorms I lived in all were carpeted, but I know of ones that weren’t…and I defnitly would want a rug if one wasn’t! You don't want to know how many people have slept on the matts provide by the college or what they may have done on it. Plus, they are as old as the hills. I actually developed back problems from sleeping on the bed in my freshman dorm. Do yourself a favor, call 1-800-Mattress. I bought 2 mattresses from them - once to replace my dorm matt and once when I moved off campus. Their prices were great and they delivered the SAME DAY!

Trust me on this one…if your college allows it, get a new mattress!!! For example, the bed lifters and halogen lamps were not allowed in my dorms. Good post!

As a former RA, I must say that these are good suggestions but people should make sure that the things they buy aren’t against the rules. Although most, if not all, of the dorms at my college had carpeted floors, getting a rug was still nice to add a bit of personality to your floor and cover up stains. I would recommend getting a colorful rug, however, because dorm rooms in general tend to be drab.

I agree about getting a rug.
