Trust me on this one...if your college allows it, get a new mattress!!! You don't want to know how many people have slept on the matts provide by the college or what they may have done on it. Plus, they are as old as the hills. I actually developed back problems from sleeping on the bed in my freshman dorm. Do yourself a favor, call 1-800-Mattress. I bought 2 mattresses from them - once to replace my dorm matt and once when I moved off campus. Their prices were great and they delivered the SAME DAY!

As a former RA, I must say that these are good suggestions but people should make sure that the things they buy aren't against the rules. For example, the bed lifters and halogen lamps were not allowed in my dorms. Good post!

I agree about getting a rug. Although most, if not all, of the dorms at my college had carpeted floors, getting a rug was still nice to add a bit of personality to your floor and cover up stains. I would recommend getting a colorful rug, however, because dorm rooms in general tend to be drab.
