Girl’s Night! 8 Fun Suggestions for Spending Time with Friends

After a frenzied week of tests, assignments, and 20-page papers due (ha, we wish we were kidding … ) sometimes you just need to unwind and kick it back with the girls… it’s time for a Girl’s Night!

Whether you want to keep it low key and spend the night in or dust off that hot dress you’ve been dying to wear, every college girl can benefit from some quality friend time. Here are 8 fun things to do for girl’s night in – because who said sleepovers were only for 7th graders? So passe!

If you’re staying in …

1. Throw a Mini Cooking Party

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to try out a new recipe, why not share the love in the process? Rustle up some dishes together, making the menu as extensive or simple as you want. Reserve your dorm kitchen (if needed) and look up some tasty dishes ahead of time, make a grocery run to grab ingredients, and then split the costs. Cooking and baking is a great way to bond, and the memories made during the process could last a lifetime!

Top Chef Host Padma Lakshmi said it best herself in Food & Wine magazine:

I can think of nothing more lovely than cooking for friends with music blaring, everyone talking over one another, copious drinking, staying up until 2 a.m., getting hungry again and eating out of the pot with a fork.

2. Indulge in Wine & Cheese

For those of you 21-plus (or studying abroad), a wine and cheese night is a great thing to do for girl’s night in if you and your friends have a lot of catching up to do. The best part is, you don’t have to be a connoisseur to enjoy this classy combination. And it’s easy as pie to gather up what you need, as everything can be purchased at your local supermarket. If you’re itching for a guide, however, check out these pairing recommendations and instructions on how to construct a basic cheese plate.

Once you all have decided on a combo, consider adding on these complementing munchies to your plate for some variety:

  • Seedless Grapes
  • Almonds
  • An assortment of crackers
  • Toasted garlic bread

3. Pop in a TV Show or Movie (or two!)

Movies and TV shows are classic staples for girls’ nights in – even if they’re just playing in the background while you talk or set up an at-home spa.

In addition to watching the Academy Awards tonight (follow CF’s live Twitter stream starting at 5:30 PM Eastern to comment on the red carpet arrivals with us!), you could also check out some of our top 10 favorite fashion films (and ten more movies for fashion inspiration), which are sure to be instant faves!

Need more? Here are a few girly movie suggestions ranging from nostalgic to recent; of course there are tons of other options too, depending on your and your pals’ preferences!

  • Breakfast at Tiffany’s
  • When Harry Met Sally
  • Sex and the City (series and the movies)
  • Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (1 & 2)
  • Miss Congeniality
  • Clueless
  • Bridesmaids
  • Bridget Jones’ Diary

4. Craft

When you hear the word “crafting”, don’t let the image of grandmas forming a knitting circle or kindergarten antics pop into your head … DIYing can be a fantastic stress reliever; not to mention, the sense of accomplishment you get when seeing the finished result is pretty awesome. The best part is inspiration can be found anywhere!

Check out the DIY section on Pinterest, browse through our DIY project archive, go to a craft fair, or browse through your favorite fashion magazines and create items inspired by the high-end runway looks. Here are some more ideas on cool DIY activities:

  • Sewing. Add on trims or studs to old jeans, patch together trinkets, skinny-fy your bootcut jeans, or even try making an original garment.
  • Jewelry or Home Accessories. From bejeweled headbands to old pillowcase lamp shades, theDIY ideas are endless.
  • Friendship Bracelets. We’re not talking middle-summer-camp string wrap arounds – try making a cool charm bracelet or stylish necklace for kicks! Theme them around your favorite colors or school colors, and attach feathers, beads, or other add-ons for even more customization.

If you’re going out …

1. Treat Yourselves to Retail Therapy

Just for one day, take shopping to a whole new level: Book appointments at your favorite department store counters for all of you to get your makeup done, then pull out all the stops and pick out a few prom or special event dresses for each other to model! Why? Simply because getting glammed up and dressing to the 9’s is always fun.

Here’s a bonus: if you plan to go downtown later that night, all you have to do is change, since you’ll already be rocking dewy skin and a stellar smokey eye. (Just make sure you each buy something, even if it’s small, from the makeup counter to thank the artist for his or her time!)

There’s also no harm in just perusing the stores (or going thrifting!), even if you don’t plan on buying anything. Try on all the shoes you want to your heart’s content, treat yourself to a new bag, check out sales, the works. Make the mall your oyster.

2. Go Dancing

Sometimes a girl’s gotta blow off some steam, and dancing the night away is the perfect way to do it! Throw on a pair of (relatively) comfy heels and the dress you’ve been saving for that occasion, then hit the dance clubs with your crew. Hip hop, salsa, two step, you name it – just be sure to stay safe if you plan on partying til the sun rises!

3. Eat Dinner at a Swanky New Place

There are few things better than having a long conversation over a delicious meal with your favorite people (it’s the simple things in life …) But instead of sticking to that bistro you frequent a few times a week, why not try a whole new place all together?

Pinpoint what you all are craving, read up on Yelp reviews, and explore a side of town you haven’t seen before. Plus, it’s always fun to eat out potluck style, with each of you sharing everything, and splitting appetizers, main courses, and desserts will give you more bang for your buck.

4. Try Evening Yoga

If you’ve all had a manically stressful week and aren’t in the mood for anything too high-strung, look up an evening yoga class to relieve tension of body and mind.

Sometimes closing your eyes, breathing deeply, and realigning your thoughts can do wonders for rejuvenation. Try snagging a Groupon or checking around your area to see what studios offer affordable walk ins – some may even offer group discounts! Quick tip, though: If you’re completely zapped of energy, opt for low-intensity Satyanada or hatha yoga, and save the the Ashtanga and Bikhram classes for another day.

Along with the cooking party, I love the idea of having truffle – making parties, especially on Valentine’s (Singles Awareness Day) It’s so fun and simple and your friends can take little boxes of chocolates home with them and decide which ones they want.

Sometimes it’s nice to just spend a quiet night with friends. Some friends and I cooked dinner and then watched a Downton Abbey mini marathon one Saturday night. Going out is fun, but it’s not for everybody and it’s not for every weekend.

Reading this made me miss my best girl friends. Some of the many things we did together are on this list. If we weren’t studying in different universities and cities right now, I bet we’d still be doing these things and more.

I just came from a Stella and Dot jewelry party and it was super fun. I think hosting a jewelry exchange or something fashion oriented is always fun with girls.

Thanks Amanda~ I love all these ideas and hope to be able to do a few of these with my two best girl friends (wink*) I feel that creating memories with your close friends is so important, especially when we all are in some serious need of TLC~ haha I think another necessary item to have with you when going out is a good camera to immortalize those fun times with the people you love, don’t you agree?

My friends and I like to dress each other up and have impromptu photo shoots because you’re only young once and you might as well capture it on film! We take turns being the photographer and let the silliness take over eg. “You are a pouty tiger, somebody ate your lunch…go!” Surprisingly sometimes those turn out to be the best pictures. Pinup girls are our current obsession.
