Ever heard the phrase “Go big or go home?” As far as I’m concerned, that phrase is talking about handbags. Don’t get me wrong, a clutch can sometimes be the ultimate in style and function, but for the day to day, especially if you want the perfect mix of form and function, an oversized bag is the way to go!

Why buy?

Oversized bags are not only adorable, but also totally versatile. They’ll carry all of your stuff in a variety of situations, from campus to coffee house and work to dates. If you invest in a quality bag, it will last years! Big bags are also a great way to play with proportions and spice up an outfit. They definitely make an impression!

Still not sold? Use the size to your advantage. Another perk of a big bag is that they can make their wearer seem noticeably dainty in comparison.

Tips for Carrying and Buying an Oversized Bag

• Consider your height. The taller you are, the bigger the bag you’re going to be able to rock. Yes, it’s unfair if you’re shorter, but you don’t want a gigantic bag to dwarf you! No matter your height, for the most flattering look, your big bag should hit right in the middle of your waist. Higher and it will annoy you, lower and it can make your hips look bigger. Aim for the sweet spot–elbow length!

• Utilize your new-found space. The oversized bag’s number one advantage is its space! Use it, girls! Feel free to bring along your MP3 player, magazine, and gigantic sunglasses that don’t fit in any of your other purses–your big bag’s got you covered! You can also use it as an eco-friendly shopping bag. Another perk of oversized bags is that they often have many pockets and compartments for easy storage and access to your most needed possessions. Make sure not to over-stuff, though; carrying a heavy bag can lead to back and shoulder pain.

• Splurge on classics and neutrals, save on trends and flash. As always, if you’re looking for an investment piece, go for something classic. Leather (or faux leather if you’re an animal lover!) is always in style and looks great. If you can afford to splurge, there are designer bags with well-known silhouettes (think YSL’s Muse, Louis Vuitton’s Alma or Speedy, Hermés’ Birkin, or Balenciaga’s Motorcyle, ) and/or logos are always classic. Of course, if you’re looking for something trendy or flashy, there are tons of stores that sell great oversized bags in animal prints, with stud detailing, or in wild colors–whatever the trend of the moment is–on the cheap.

Therefore, in this bi-weekly column I’ll let you know about some products that I think are really worth spending your money on. I’ll be looking at pieces that are essential for college students, great bargain finds, and things that I just love!

There’s nothing like the feeling of picking out the perfect outfit on a Monday morning…only to have a button pop off your shirt during your first class. Or to spill coffee all over it. Or to realize you forgot to put on deodorant in your rush to leave that morning! Or… well, you know, the list goes on.

Unfortunately, we have all had and will continue to have “those days” when nothing seems to go right. That’s why my fabulous finds for this week are the products from Urban Aid, a completely genius brand that will help you out on those disastrous days.

Why I Love Urban Aid Kits

• Urban Aid is a company developed by women around our ages who realized how helpful it would be to have some aid in dealing with the trials of our day-to-day lives. They have kits for many of the “oops” situations we college girls may find ourselves in, such as clothing malfunctions, unexpected sleepovers, and even period problems!
• These kits include a variety of little items that you’ve probably thought of buying or bringing before, but somehow never seem to have on hand when you need them! Throughout my years in California, I was able to evade the prospect of buying a pair of rain boots. Sure, it rained in December, but I wasn’t ready to slip on a pair of rubber galoshes. However, I knew I would need a pair of rain boots once I moved to New York City — and now that I’m here, I’m so glad I have my pair of Burberry checkered rain boots to keep me dry in the wet and freezing cold (okay, I know it’s only November, but it’s freezing enough for me!).

Interestingly enough, many of my friends found the need to buy rain boots once they arrived on their college campuses — from my fellow friends here at Columbia University to my friends at University of California Berkeley. While shopping for my rain boots this past summer, I learned to buy rain boots a half-size to one full size bigger in order to allow for room when wearing warm wool socks in the winter. I guess I’m still getting used to wearing rain boots — but it’s comforting to know that there are so many stylish options out there!

Keep it classy. Though there are times when a completely buttoned trench and a pair of sassy stilettos would totally work, for every day, it’s usually best to pair your trench with a longer dress, pants, or tights to avoid being mistaken for a flasher!

Try fitted styles. Since trench coats have so much fabric, they can easily make you look bulky if you pick the wrong size. Go for fitted, narrow silhouettes, and use the attached belt to define your waist.

Layer for warmth. Though most trenches will protect you from even the rainiest of days, these coats are best for warmer temperatures. If you want to dress up a fall or winter outfit with a trench, be sure to layer so you don’t freeze! Some trench coats come with a winter-weight liner for wear in colder climates.

With temperatures continuing to drop and snow already on the ground Monday morning in Minnesota, I thought I would write a little something up about cold-weather gear that is absolutely essential for really cold days.

When I say really cold days, I’m not talking about your typical 40 degree temperatures. I’m talking 20° and under. With snow and ice.

I hate to break it to you angels, but unless you live in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s only going to get colder. Not to worry, though: these five must-have items will keep you toasty all through our Northern winter! As always, expect to invest a bit more in quality pieces–I promise they’re worth it!

Thermal Shirts:

Thermals are great pieces for layering in winter months. Their long-sleeve, insulating waffle knits lock in warmth! Wear them over tank tops, under vests or hoodies, or under your favorite tees for added heat.

Don’t want to look like a little boy in long underwear? You don’t have to! Brands like Primp, Juicy Couture, and even American Eagle and Target carry adorable thermals. Comfy enough to wear to bed, but cute enough to wear to class, thermals provide the best of both worlds in cold winter weather!

Pick up a few solid thermals, one with embellishments, and one with a girly print and you’re all set for the season. Make sure to add cute accessories to keep your outfit from looking too utilitarian!

Leggings:

So I know you’re probably thinking, “Um, what? Leggings are NOT warm!” And you’d be right: they’re not. At least, not on their own.

However, on a really cold day, leggings function as totally cute long underwear that you can wear under your favorite jeans or pants. They work especially well under baggier/boyfriend-fit styles, and will help keep you toasty even if you’re wearing a destroyed pair.

When buying leggings to wear under pants, it’s a good idea to purchase the longest styles available in order to eliminate any annoying gaps of uncovered skin! Stirrup and ankle-length leggings are great choices for colder months!

Warm Boots:

Warm boots are always nice to have for colder weather, but when snow is involved, they are a downright must. Who wants to slush through their walk to class? Not me! Personally, I prefer my toes to be warm and dry.

The obvious choice for many college girls is a pair of Ugg boots–their fur-lined boots keep toes cozy, warm, and protected from the elements. They can be a little clunky, but I’m personally a fan. Promise not to wear them with skirts or dresses in any other season and you’ll be fine.

If Uggs aren’t your style or you need something more heavy-duty, the company Sorel makes great boots with waterproof uppers, removable lining, and rubber traction-enhancing soles for the coldest and snowiest of winter days!

Finally, Wellington rain boots can be another great option in slushy weather–just make sure to size up so you can wear an extra pair of socks or add a boot-liner for warmth!

Down (or Synthetic Down):

Down jackets and vests provide great insulation and protection from the elements. Editor’s Note: If you’re an animal lover, synthetic down is a cruelty-free option that’s just as functional, too!

Down jackets can look bit puffy, but that extra insulation is just what will keep you warm! Down is a definite don’t in wet weather, however, as it gets soggy and loses all of its insulating power – that’s where synthetic is preferable. Look for pieces with water-resitent outer layers to stay dry!

If you find down jackets too unwieldy, try a down vest! Vests are great for layering with long shirts, or even over other jackets for particularly freezing days.

Wool:

If you’re looking to stay really warm this winter, wool clothing is a great option. From jackets to skirts to socks to scarves, wool picks are easy to find and provide great insulation. Unlike cotton or down, breathable wool has the ability to keep you warm when wet.

Worried about the itchiness? Try Merino wool–a finer-fiber variety made from the Merino Sheep–to get wool’s warming benefits without the scratchiness. Wool is incredibly durable and will keep you warm in the coldest weather due to its thick knits. If you don’t want to splurge on a 100% wool jacket, try wool socks, scarves, and hats for a similar effect. Wool’s great texture will look fabulous against any outfit!

Editor’s Note: Again, if you’re an animal lover, there are great cruelty-free wool alternatives out there, too. A few examples include cotton flannel, polyester fleece, synthetic shearling, and Tencel— a breathable, durable, and biodegradable wool substitute. There are tons of options out there, so shop around!

Therefore, in this bi-weekly column I’ll let you know about some products that I think are really worth spending your money on. I’ll be looking at pieces that I think are essential for college students, great bargain finds, and things that I just love!

To begin, this week I’ll be looking at an important and functional accessory that is often overlooked: the umbrella.

As college students, we are forced to endure rainy weather in order to get around, which makes durable raingear essential. And I would have been significantly less fashionable—and wetter!—braving those rainy days without the help of the trusty Marc by Marc Jacobs umbrella I was lucky enough to discover at the Marc Jacobs Accessory Store last year!

Why I Love It:

While I know a designer umbrella may sound ridiculous to suggest as a budget-friendly buy, I swear it’s not as crazy as it sounds:

First, the umbrella costs under $20, which is a pretty fair price for an umbrella. Most reliable umbrellas retail for around $20 now, so it’s just about what you would pay for any department store umbrella.

Second, you can buy it in a bunch of cute patterns and colors. The one in the picture above—modeled by my lovely roommate—is decorated with adorable hearts, but they also sell them in leopard print, paisley, and many other prints.

Having an umbrella with a fun print is a great way to add excitement to your typical rain boots-and-jeans rainy-day look. It also cheers me up a little to be a bright spot on the street amongst a see of big, bulky black umbrellas!

Third, and most importantly, this umbrella really works! And when I say works, I mean it is the perfect size (just big enough for you and maybe one other person to squeeze under), will not flip inside out (because that is the ultimate problem I have had in the past with other umbrellas), and absolutely will not break no matter how bad the weather gets (it has held its own battling New York City winds!).

In my experience, this umbrella has held up better than any other my friends have had. Besides that, it is also so much cuter than your average umbrella! From the pattern down to the easy-to-grasp plastic handle, it is the perfect addition to any bad-weather outfit.

Rainy days are tough enough, from devising a splash-friendly ensemble to smoothing down your frizzing hair while trying to navigate campus with a floppy hood hanging over your eyes. This umbrella will ensure you look fashionable, put-together, and all around fabulous while you brave the weather throughout your day!

I was overwhelmed with all of the feedback about the tough/edgy girl in the comments section of Announcing: The Closet Makeovers Series. I was so interested to see all of the different styles, but this one really stands out to me a lot.

So here are the basic pieces you need if you want to create an edgy style in your wardrobe. Recall that these are the basics to build on. I want you to think of them more abstractly and less literally. Fashion is supposed to inspire, there are no rules!

Closet Essentials for the Edgy Style

Jeans:

I once again wanted to talk about the skinny jean because I think they are most widely associated with the edgy vibe. The jeans below are a bit different from the ones that I talked about in the feminine basics article because I wanted to find some that were a bit more interesting for those of you that like to make a statement with jeans.

The Perfect Little Black Dress:

I thought of this ever-so-classy essential for the edgy girls because many of you expressed your love for the color black. I wanted to show you some dresses that would be great from day to day, as well as some that would really make a statement for a night out.

Product Information: The first and second dresses are from Forever 21 and I chose them for more of a day to day feel. They’re super flattering because they nip you in at the waist to accentuate curves! Throw these on with a great pair of tights and some studded heels to take them to evening.

Leggings and tights:

Leggings are also something I think that every college girl should consider. Personally, I’m a fan of them for game days worn with a jersey, but there are tons of other ways to wear them. Liza wrote an entire article on how to wear leggings that is definitely worth checking out!

The leggings below are a step up from you basic black, and they have some fun tough-girl touches to them.

The tights are also a step away from your basic black. The world of tights is vast and it can keep your legs warm on a cold fall day.

I love brooches! Inspired by girls I’ve seen around campus, I can’t wait to find the perfect brooch and pin it to my scarf in the winter – how chic is that!? Brooches are easy to find in vintage stores and a lot of fun to sort through! Always pick ones that don’t appear to be missing pieces (jewels, etc.) and that don’t have broken pins – and when you get them home, give them a gentle cleaning just in case!

Confession: I love owl necklaces!

I own three already and I just could not resist showing you guys this owl necklace from Modcloth. Perhaps a little impractical, but I think it would look great with a plain white tee shirt, some fabulous skinny jeans, and your best boyfriend blazer! All three of these necklaces definitely make a statement, but I love how vintage and fun they are. You can find tons of owl necklaces in vintage stores, as well as a lot of costume jewelry similar to the green necklace!

Rings can be such a great addition to an outfit – they can be subtle in the big picture of the outfit, but are one of the beautiful little details that give you true style!

These three rings are just a selection of my favorites I found while searching – there are a lot of cool vintage-inspired rings out there now, but you can find very similar pieces in vintage stores for dead cheap. As with anything vintage, you just have be willing to sort through a lot of other stuff!

There are a few classic jewelry items that every girl should own. These accessories work with any outfit, dressy or casual, and because of their classic design and appeal, you’ll be able to wear them for the rest of your life!

The following pieces are great to splurge on so you can invest in heirloom quality stuff, but there’s always some wiggle room to fake it and save! I’ll show you how to do it!

Chic Stud Earrings:

If you have pierced ears, you probably own a pair or two of stud earrings. I love studs because they’re super easy to wear and they go with everything. For something so simple and timeless, stud earrings come in many varieties – from all-metal styles to tiny cuts of your birth stone. Arguably the most chic, however, are pearl and diamond studs.

Today, pearl studs are totally budget friendly–freshwater cultured pearls, even with larger studs, run under $75. Want to save? Claire’s, Forever 21, and Target always have adorable 3-packs of pearl studs for under $10! When it comes to diamonds, Target and Overstock.com sell deeply discounted stud earrings. If you’re lucky, you’ll find natural quarter-carat studs on “The O” for under $100!

Another money-saving tactic when it comes to diamonds is to choose lab-created varieties (simulated diamonds grown in a lab) or CZ’s. No one will be able to tell the difference, and you’ll save a ton!

Classic Pearl Necklace:

When you think of elegant, timeless jewelry, pearls are probably the first thing that come to mind!

A truly versatile style, pearls come in plenty of varieties. Pick your color, length, size, closure, even type of pearl! Each of these variables can create a different look.

As far as pricing goes, Freshwater pearls will run you the least, Akoya pearls fall in the middle, and South Sea pearls will be the most expensive. Between these varieties, prices can run anywhere from $100 to tens of thousands. Choose wisely!

Of course, there is no reason to spend this much if you don’t want to! There are plenty of inexpensive cultured, glass, and even plastic pearls available at plenty of your favorite retailers. If you choose to go this route, you’ll get the most mileage out of a long (18”+) strand of glass pearls. You’ll capture the look and feel of real pearls, and the long length will allow you to wear your necklace in multiple ways.

Whatever style you choose, a pearl necklace is a great way to dress up an outfit with a touch of classic elegance!

Sophisticated watch:

These days, I know most of us only check the time on our ever-present cell phones, but what do you do when you can’t have your phone? Or what about those special occasions where you just want to look elegant and pulled together? A sophisticated, pretty watch is the perfect solution.

A watch is a definite staple for an adult wardrobe, and it’s something you can easily incorporate into your own right now. As fun as bright colors, rhinestones, and bracelet styles can be, a classic, sophisticated watch will get you through any situation, go with anything, and help you transition seamlessly from college girl to young professional!

Of course, “classic” doesn’t have to mean boring! You’ll still have plenty of options here including choices of bands, metals, specific styles, enamel, and bezels! Go crazy, girls! But remember to keep it classy, of course!

Timeless monogrammed items:

To me, there’s nothing more classically beautiful than a monogram. A symbol made by overlapping two or more of your initials, think of a monogram as your pretty personal signature. Wearing monogrammed jewelry gives you a chance to wear something that’s all about you!

That said, I also love the idea of wearing a family member’s or best friend’s monogram, too. And there are so many options for wearing! Whether you choose a signet ring, initial pendant, or bracelet charms, monograms are simple, beautiful, and timeless! Your choice of metals and styles for monogrammed pieces will dictate whether your jewelry is a “splurge” or “save”!

Inspired by Noel’s fabulous post on her Hermes sample sale scarves, I thought I would let all of you girls in on five great stores where you can get awesome clothes way below their usual prices!

With these stores, even if you don’t live in NY, you can still get sample sale prices! The shops I picked are all national chains, but I’m sure you all know of amazing thrift/resale stores in your neighborhoods and online, too, so definitely share them in the comment section! I’m interested to know where you guys do your shopping.

If you’re looking to make a big purchase or just want to treat yourself and update your wardrobe with something special, try one of these five stores for chic clothes on the cheap!

5. Plato’s Closet:

While finding high-end, designer pieces at Plato’s can be pretty hit or miss, this is a great store to pick up cute brand-name basics from mall stores at cheap prices.

Plato’s buys and sells gently used, current in-style teen clothing at a fraction of their going prices. Expect to find items well under $40 from Bebe, Gap, American Eagle, J.Crew, the A&F brands, Express and Forever 21. Also, make sure to search for the occasional pair of designer jeans, Juicy Couture track suits, and designer once-worn dresses donated after homecoming or prom!

4. Marshall’s & TJ Maxx:

While both these stores require digging to get to their designer gold, they’re great places to go for new designer purses, sunglasses, and clothing. Case in point: I’ve gotten Coach shoes for $39, Michael Kors sunglasses for $15, J.Brand jeans for $60, and Cole Haan bags for $100 at these two stores, owned by the same company.

Shopping Marshall’s and TJ Maxx can definitely be overwhelming, so it’s a good idea to go with an idea of what you want and how much you’re willing to spend. Skip the cheesy “teen” sections of the stores that are full of unexciting pieces and go straight for the women’s, shoe, and purse sections to search for the best stuff.

TJ Maxx locations with Runway departments are the best–there you’ll find a selection of very high end pieces for hundreds, even thousands of dollars off. They’re definitely worth checking out and saving those dollars for! You never know when you’ll find a marked-down Balenciaga bag or Missoni dress The Runway!

3. Premium Outlet Malls:

For a fun girl’s day out and endless variety, premium outlet malls are the way to go!

With premium outlet malls, you’ll get to choose between typical mall brands and if you’re lucky, you’ll be treated to big-name outlet stores of BCBG, Coach, Burberry, Betsey Johnson, Kate Spade, and Versace, just to name a few. While prices will still be considerable, there is definitely something good to be said about driving for hours, having lunch at a cafe with the girls, and finding an amazing Gucci wallet or Burberry scarf for 50% off.

Premium outlet malls aren’t just for casual purchases–they’re all out shopping events! For a list of outlets near you, or to find outlet stores by brand, check out Outlet Bound.

2. Nordstrom Rack:

If you love Nordstrom but aren’t in love with their prices, Nordstrom Rack is the perfect option to get the same great style while saving some money. Stocked with everything a traditional Nordstrom store has, The Rack has everything from shoes to lingerie, plus fun seasonal favorites like summer bikinis and winter outerwear.

Though you’ll have to search for the best deals and your favorite brands, there never seems to be a shortage of 7 For All Mankind, Free People, True Religion, Juicy Couture, or Matty M, at least at my favorite Rack. My favorite departments include samples from Savvy and t.b.d., as well as the extensive shoe selection! You’ll be able to find pieces that are trendy and current and classy investment items here on a good day!

A final perk? If you’re lucky enough to have a Nordstrom gift card, it also works at The Rack, so you can buy even more great stuff than you would have at the original store. Find your locations here!

A final favorite for Chic on the Cheap is undoubtedly Saks Off 5th. It’s the best of both worlds–an upscale shopping experience coupled with bargain prices!

Off 5th outlets feature a wide variety of brands and incredible selection. You’ll find great clothing, accessories, and shoes here for at least 40% off retail, plus save additional percentages with ongoing promotions and store coupons. Off 5th stores are also known to host glitzy private shopping events for Saks cardholders and e-mail subscribers, so look out for invite-only sample sales if you’re a frequent shopper.

Saks off 5th is also a great place to look for things you loved last season marked way down. Missed purchasing Primp thermals, denim cut offs, wellington boots, or liquid leggings? Look no further than Off 5th for amazing selection!
