What first grabbed my attention about Mari’s outfit was her footwear. Then slowly, I began noticing other great details about her outfit. I knew I had to talk to her after I spent the entire class wondering how she pieced together her look. Fashion is all about making your outfit choices unique to you and Mari certainly accomplishes this.

First and foremost, where did you get your shoes? “I love Rachel Comey boots, but I wanted to find something cheaper. I used Zappos to find these Dolce Vita boots.”

Where are your favorite places to shop? “I am obsessed with the website Need Supply. I love everything on it. I also like H&M, Urban Outfitters, and Forever 21.”

What inspires your style? “I really love street fashion. I use Google Reader to keep up with fashion blogs. My favorite one is Blushing Ambition.”

Elements of Mari’s Outfit

1. Grey Suede Boots

I love the small heel on these Dole Vita boots. Because we go to school in Iowa, you practically have to be a daredevil to wear heels to class with the extreme amount of ice around, so she gets even more fashion credit. Not to mention how Mari made her outfit unique by doing a small cuff instead of the standard large cuff with her jeans.

2. Layering

Iowa is not only cold, but the weather tends to change quickly. So layering is the perfect way to keep up with the crazy Iowan climate. I love how Mari not only used layering to stay warm, but also to add major style to her look: By mixing a burnt orange button-down with a classic striped sweater and a strand of pearls, she creates a preppy yet fashion-forward aesthetic; very J.Crew.

3. Mix Your Metals

Mari’s rings are perhaps my favorite element of her look. Rings are my favorite type of jewelry and Mari has combined all sorts of rings to really personalize her look.

Take a cue from her and don’t be afraid to mix gold and silver. (The “no mixed metals” fashion rule is so 1950s!) Also, why not try doubling up on rings, like Mari did? As you can see, she also made the creative choice to place a pinky ring above another on her middle finger. We love it!

I had seen Jamie in class every now and then, since we are the same major, and had often noticed her impeccable sense of style. But on this particularly dreary day, she walked into lecture with an outfit so sweet and happy you would have expected it to be 65 and sunny outside. Her lace-up boots, adorable printed dress and pink bow caught my eye the minute she took off her scarf and raincoat – a stylish one, at that. Read on to learn more about Jamie’s unique style!

Who or what inspires your style?  “Street style blogs, Alexa Chung. Anything cool that I find online.”

Where do you like to shop? “H&M is always good, Forever 21, Saver’s – a thrift store from my hometown, and secondhand shops in general.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “Well it really changes with the day… clean, I guess? Very put-together. I like to look nice.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “The jacket because of all the rain, and then this is my new favorite dress, it’s only the second time I’ve worn it! It has a really cool back cut-out.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “No sweats! Haha. What you wear doesn’t necessarily have to be trendy, but stuff that you’re comfortable in, and don’t look like you just woke up. Be yourself.”

What are you favorite trends right now? “Collared shirts, buttoned up – they’re everywhere. Especially the Peter Pan collar, like the one on my dress! I also really like the high-low hemline of dresses or skirts where they are longer in the back than the front. That’s gonna be all over my spring wardrobe!”

Who are your favorite designers? “Betsey Johnson, Vivienne Westwood, and Anna Sui.”

What do you like to do for fun? “Well, if I have time, reading. And, of course, listening to music, hanging out with friends… We tend to play a lot of board games.  This is only if I have all my homework done! I also like to sew to get my mind off things and relax.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “Anyone?! Hmm… Alexa Chung!”

Elements of Jamie’s Outfit

1. Large Frames and Pink Bow

Jamie pulls off the large-framed look of her glasses with shiny, sleek hair and an eye-catching bow. When wearing large frames, it’s a good idea to keep the rest of your look minimal to avoid overpowering them. Also seen here is the front view of her dress and its lovely Peter Pan collar – a huge trend popping up all over the runways.

2. Navy Print Dress

This lightweight dress is really unexpected for a winter outfit, which makes it that much more exciting! The white all-over horse print is really cute, and the interesting back cut out is so unique – have you ever seen a dress like that? This dress is perfect for layering in winter, as Jamie did here (though she took off the layers for our detail shots), and wearing by itself into summer.

3. Black Lace-Up Boots

Basic black lace-up boots can add an edge to any outfit. Here, Jamie pairs hers with black tights and knee-length socks to keep her legs warm while staying stylish. I have a similar pair that I love to wear with cozy black leg warmers over skinny jeans. It’s very fun to wear them with something feminine like Jamie’s dress or anything with ruffles and lace.

As I was taking a break in between classes, I noticed a girl who rocked mixed prints without looking over-the-top. Rachel proves that fashion is about taking risks, feeling young, and looking good. Who or what inspires you? “I’m inspired by music. Right now, I’m really into We are Scientists, Florence and the Machine, Kings of Leon and Lana del Rey. I like to take the styles of music and interpret them into my fashion choices. The past inspires me — there are times when I try to channel a certain era in my clothing choices. I’m also inspired by young Hollywood and trends that are popular at the moment — I try to put my own twist on them.”

Where do you like to shop? “Mainly, I love to shop at consignment shops, thrift stores, and vintage boutiques. I’m really into Urban Outfitters and H&M. I also love Modcloth, Topshop and sometimes American Apparel.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “My sense of style is totally eclectic. Sometimes I’m clad in J.Crew and preppy/nautical pieces, other times I’m decked out in H&M and grunge/hipster pieces. It depends on my mood! Mostly I mix and match a lot of different styles — 80 percent of my wardrobe is consignment/thrift. Lately I’ve been channeling the ’90s and/or old ladies, but in a good way.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I put this outfit together today because I was feeling a change of pace. It’s been pretty dark and cold lately so I thought I would brighten up my wardrobe with some bold colors, mixed florals and cowgirl accents! I’m kinda all over the place, but I enjoy it.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “I would tell other students to check out Boom Babies in Westcott for some awesome stuff. You’d be surprised at what you can find at low prices! Also, Target is a good place to go for inexpensive fashion. I would also tell people to dress how they want to be perceived –putting in just a little bit of effort can make a really good impression on those around you.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “Right now, for the winter months, I’m really into big knit scarves and high riding boots, as well as fur, high socks, and tights – but done with just the right amount of accessories. I’m also in love with the long skirt and boots look, although I don’t own any… yet.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “If I could raid anyone’s closet, it would probably have to be Lady Gaga’s because I’m obsessed with her and who wouldn’t want the opportunity to try on all her crazy looks?!”

Elements of Rachel’s Outfit

1. The Trendy Aesthetic: Mixed Prints

Rachel’s sexy red striped top combined with her sweet blue floral cardigan makes her look very versatile and fun. When I first saw her, I immediately thought about the American flag. This outfit could be worn during the summer or could also be paired with a coat or jacket – as Rachel did here, though she took it off for our photoshoot – during the frosty winter days.

2. The Feminine Vibe: Belted Skirt

The black printed floral skirt gives off a feminine but edgy kind of look. It’s the perfect skirt that can be worn anywhere – from school to parties to movie dates! Wearing a cute belt like Rachel’s is a great way to emphasize your curves that might get hidden by a flowy skirt.

3. The Essentials: Solid Footwear

Boots are the best way to keep warm and stay standing during the winter months, especially when snow and ice are involved. You can never go wrong with a plain pair of solid colored boots like Rachel’s – they literally go with everything! Also, leggings and stockings are good ways to keep your skin protected from the chilly weather. Remember to stock up on black legwear since it’s basic and versatile.

How would you describe your style? “I don’t want to say the word hipster, but I don’t want to say trendy either…but it is kind of trendy. Haha, I don’t know – I like to make a statement, I guess. I am not much of a risk-taker, but I see myself as a person who likes to stand out in a more subtle way, if that makes sense.”

What inspires your style? ”Well, I went to LaGuardia High School where all the girls were cool in terms of fashion, so I was constantly surrounded by that, which definitely affected me. While working at American Apparel over the summer, everybody has to wear American Apparel while working in the store, and it was the first time I had to put together outfits before the morning of. Working at American Apparel was what got me started on wearing things that were weird, yet cool. Going to school in Montreal doesn’t really inspire me much because I’m always studying, and I’m not exposed to fashion as much there.”

What websites or blogs do you usually check out? ”Lookbook, a French one I can’t exactly pronounce…and uh, there’s one called Wolf Club, which is really cool. A lot of these sites are more photography than fashion tips, so a lot of the photos are of crazy outfits that I’d never wear. But Lookbook is definitely the more wearable one.”

What is your favorite accessory or article of clothing? “I recently got these studded earrings from Topshop, and I love them. My favorite thing is pretty much whatever I’ve bought recently. But something that I have had for a while is a grey shirt from Urban Outfitters which is cut in this really cool asymmetrical way. I can wear that shirt with pretty much anything to make my outfit instantly more stylish.”

What stores do you usually shop at? “I shop at American Apparel, Urban Outfitters, Brandy and Melville, Metropolis, and Trash and Vaudeville for Jeans. There’s also this vintage store called Monk that has awesome clothes. I recently got a blazer from there that’s a vintage Club Monaco for $20. But lately, my go-to store has been Metropolis.”

If you could raid anybody’s closet, who’s would it be and why? ”Hmm…I really like Alexa Chung‘s style, and Rumi from Fashiontoast.com.  I love how chic Rumi’s clothing is, but my only problem is that she rarely seems to wear colors these days, and I just recently got into color. But her style is exquisite. I like her leather jackets, heels and studded things. Rumi’s outfits are easy-to-wear, simple, and beautiful. I think they’re the safest out there if you want to look fashionable, but not too over-the-top.”

What advice would you give to others looking to improve their style? “Be exposed. I feel like usually the biggest problem is not being comfortable wearing things you’re not used to, so just go through blogs and try to find a variety of different fashions. There is no style that is the ‘correct fashion’ because it depends on the person.”

Elements of Hika’s Outfit

1. Chiffon Shirt

Hika’s chiffon shirts are her latest obsession, and they are very easy to wear if you don’t feel like dressing up, but still want to look polished. Here, she layers one with a tank top to keep from looking over-exposed.

2. Versatile Boots

These pair of boots are great to wear with any outfit without looking too extravagant. The wooden heel helps tone down the shoe to a more casual level.

3. Interesting Jewelry

Hika doesn’t have much jewelry on, but the earrings and necklace (wrapped around her wrist to be a layered bracelet) are interesting enough to keep from simply blending into the rest of her outfit. One or two favorite pieces of jewelry work well if you’re going for a simple look that isn’t too minimal.

Elements of Vanessa’s Outfit

1. High-Low Maxi Skirt

I love this new trend for spring. While some may be hesitant to wear a maxi skirt, the high-low skirt is asymmetrical and perfect for those who fear being swallowed by fabric. I have seen adorable high-low skirts in a variety of tribal prints and bright hues for spring. I also love the idea of wearing one of these to the beach for Spring Break!

2. Bright, Sheer Tank Over Bikini Top

I love the pop of color this sheer, turquoise-hued tank adds to Vanessa’s outfit – it’s the perfect sophisticated way to cover up a bikini top! Pastels and brights dominated the runways for spring and are a perfect way to add an edge to any outfit when paired with neutral pieces.

3. Shell Necklace

I like the earthy, bohemian feel of this unique shell necklace. Vanessa says it is her go-to piece and she wears it almost every day. She found the shell while diving and had it made into a necklace. How cool is that?

Susie’s thigh-high riding boots are on trend and perfect for the season. The high-rise style helps elongate her legs and create a casual yet fashionable look. Not only are they “in”, they are comfortable and perfect for an all day shopping spree.

2. A Simple Yet Bold Pattern

The pattern of Susie’s shirt really completed her look. The print is simple with an animal print flare and acts as the bold statement piece in her outfit.

3. Purse

This purse has many compartments, yet is still small and worn close to the body – the perfect mix of style and function. A small purse like this is great for a shopping day, especially in a crowded place. Not only is it safer and easier to keep an eye on, it takes up less room and provides more arm space for tons of shopping bags!

Who or what inspires your style? “I love everything about the 1950s – the music, the makeup, and especially the fashion. You’ll find me throwing on a vintage floral dress with a Greaser-esque leather jacket and antique, often cameo jewelry.”

Where do you like to shop? “I usually mix vintage clothes with bigger brands like H&M and Urban Outfitters, but lately I’ve been surfing eBay like crazy.”

How would you describe your sense of style? “A combination of a million eras – ’90s grunge combat boots play just as well with a modern blazer as they do with hippie garb.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “It’s a testament to two sides of my personality. The button-up and pearls are classic and feminine, while the leather jacket and combat boots give me a tough, masculine edge.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “Start with fit – nothing makes fashion potential crash harder than a bad fit. Make sure your jeans are hemmed right and fitted correctly (not too loose or too tight), and remember that belting a top can give you instant hourglass appeal. From there, accessorize!”

What are your favorite trends right now? “Houndstooth, lace-up boots, color-blocking, and every kind of blazer imaginable.”

Do you have any favorite fashion designers? If so, who? “Alexander McQueen, of course, and Karl Lagerfeld, no matter which design house he’s working for. I bow down to him, the man’s a fashion god!”

What do you do for fun – do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I write everything from articles to short stories. I also love ceramics and sculpture. I haven’t gotten a chance to do it since I’ve come to college, but I’m looking forward to starting a class in downtown Athens next semester!”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “All of the Sex and the City girls toward the end of the series. I’ll never understand how Carrie afforded all of her shoes on a writer’s salary, but they were absolute perfection.”

Elements of Kate’s Outfit

1. Black Lace Up Boots

Lace-up boots have been popping up everywhere lately, and I just can’t help falling in love with them. They are edgy while remaining practical, and most importantly, are very comfortable. Kate’s cuffed jeans give her an excellent opportunity to show off her H&M purchase.

2. Houndstooth Mini Bag and Pearl Ring

Kate’s houndstooth bag is the perfect sidekick to hold all her essentials – the silky ribbon bow complements it nicely, adding a dainty feel, which looks great next to her elegant pearl ring.

3. Black Leather Jacket and Pink Blouse

Kate’s tough leather jacket, worn over a girly pink blouse, creates a balanced, well-thought-out look. The structured blouse (another H&M find) peeks out from underneath her jacket and gives her outfit a pop of color. It’s a simple combination with a great effect that Kate pulls off beautifully.

4. Flower Hair Piece and Earrings

The large white flower Kate placed in her hair stands out as her most feminine accessory. Although it’s an unexpected pairing with a leather jacket, I appreciate the bold choice. My favorite items, however, are her intricate and vintage-looking flower earrings. The studs provide a hint of glam without overdoing it.

5. Layered Necklaces

Layering necklaces has long been one of my go-to tricks for spicing up any look. A few simple pieces can completely transform a plain outfit. Here, Kate did just that by pairing ladylike pearl strands with masculine-looking chains. The combination is simply elegant and adds a touch of shine while softening the boyish aspects.

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “Don’t buy expensive brands just to have the brand. Look for pieces that you can use from season to season – take your time and find pieces that you really like.”

Demi’s heeled oxfords are a perfect example of shoes that are comfortable but still stylish. These shoes are the perfect compromise, with the comfort of flats and the elegance of heels.

Demi’s skirt has a simple design with an amazing pattern. What I love about patterned skirts like Demi’s is that you can pair them with solid colors for a pretty look, or with other patterns for a hint of the mix and match trend that’s so hot this season.

3. Red Bag

A bright bag like Demi’s can help you to add that pop of color to any outfit. In this outfit, Demi used it to complement her red top and camel-colored oxfords, however, it could also be used as the standout piece in another ensemble.

How would you describe your sense of style? “I’d describe my style as Brittneytastic. My style is really me, it changes, it’s not consistent, and I don’t stick with one style. I’m always changing and my style is too, so my style is very me!”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “I love the colors of this outfit, they fit in with fall, but I also have a little pop in the blazer. Also, I find the outfit to be very comfortable which is always important.”

What are your favorite trends right now? “I’m currently obsessed with blazers. There are so many styles, colors, shapes, and lengths! I can’t get enough. I think I’ve bought a new blazer once every weekend for the last three weeks.”

Do you have any favorite fashion designers? If so, who? “A favorite designer… that’s tough, there are so many! I love Tory Burch, Jason Wu, and I’m LOVING Rachel Zoe’s new line.”

What do you do for fun – do you have any unique hobbies or interests? “I actually like to act on the side. I’ve been on a few TV shows but I haven’t done much since I’ve been in college because of my busy schedule. However, I have been on two auditions since I’ve been at UGA.”

If you could raid anyone?s closet, who would it be and why? “Kourtney Kardashian! I love her style. I don’t think she gets enough credit for her tastefully stylish apparel. She is always looking great in my opinion!”

Elements of Brittney’s Outfit

1. Plum Blazer and Paisley Shirt

I fell in love with this richly colored blazer as soon as I saw it; the angular construction is simple and chic, while the matching buttons add an elegant touch. Paired with the orange and brown tones on the paisley print blouse, the jacket stands out even more. Both items were Forever 21 purchases that work very well together and are perfect for fall.

2. Beaded Feather Necklace

This beaded necklace, another Forever 21 find, adds a fun flair to Brittney’s classy attire and acts as a focal point for her ensemble. The necklace is also an interesting interpretation of the growing feather trend that has become popular this season.

 3. Tan Riding Leggings and Tall Brown Boots

Although very simple, Brittney’s equestrian-inspired leggings are my favorite part of her outfit. I love the brown insets on the inner thighs because they add detail without being overwhelming. I also love her flat boots – they are stylish for fall and perfect for walking around campus.
