With spring fashion right around the corner, it’s more than tempting to throw on a floral sundress and forget that the weather isn’t exactly there yet. Luckily, we can still cure our spring fever with brightly colored outerwear and accessories, even if the thermostat hasn’t actually climbed above freezing. Try choosing a classic outerwear staple – the blazer –  in a bold color to melt your winter blues away and get you ready for your spring wardrobe shopping spree.

This week, I’ll show you how to make the transition from day to night (and from winter to spring!) with a candy colored blazer that will have you dreaming of spring break long before midterms.

Bright Blazer: Class

For class, layer a neutral colored chunky sweater under your blazer to maximize cuteness and provide all the necessary warmth and coverage for those drafty classrooms. Dress the blazer down with some distressed denim for a laid-back, yet stylish look and choose a brightly colored bag in a contrasting color to make the blazer really pop. Finish off this classic look with glittery heart-shaped stud earrings and casual tan boots to combat any remaining snow.

Bright Blazer: Night Out

Peel off your layers for a fun night out by pairing your blazer with a sequined dress in a fun print. Choosing a dress in a simple black or white will really emphasize the brightness of the blazer. I’m currently obsessed with this sparkly dress from Forever 21 because of its awesome abstract animal print that’s super fun without being distracting. Pair this fierce combination with black knee-high boots and a polka dot cross-body bag for some extra dramatic touches. Bold jewelry in contrasting colors give this outfit a cool new wave vibe that will make you the life of the party.

Dear Short-y,

Thank you for your question! Wearing shorts and tights in the winter is a great way to expand your winter wardrobe as well as stand out from the crowd. However, like any new style, this look can be a little intimidating at first.

There are many different ways you can wear tights and shorts together. A popular way to wear this look is to try a denim pair. I especially like the ones with a cuff at the bottom (see example below). Black tights are a common and classic pick, but don’t be afraid to get more creative with a print or unexpected color. I also recommend trying shorts that are made of more durable fabrics, like tweed or leather, since they already have that wintery feel to them.

Another thing that may sway some from trying out this trend is the cold. A way to combat this issue is to layer up with two pairs of tights or even wear a pair of leggings (or 2!) underneath. Another option is to add on a longer coat that gives your legs a little more coverage.

But overall I think the main challenge of wearing shorts and tights is having the confidence to try out this trend. So if you’re hesitant, my advice is to take the plunge, rock with confidence, and see how it goes — they’re only clothes, right? If you don’t love something you don’t have to wear it again — that’s what’s so great about fashion!

Outfit #1

For this outfit I chose a pair of simple black shorts that act as a backdrop to the more standout pieces like this dramatic cape and suspender tights. If you aren’t a fan of these tights, any other black pair (either opaque, sheer, or patterned) would work just as well. As the saying goes, fashion rules are made to be broken, so forget the outdated “rule” that navy can’t be worn with black and try out a navy sweater. Accessorize with some bracelets and a statement necklace. Finally, ankle strap ballet flats complete the look.

Outfit #2

Product Information: Jacket, Tights, Top, Sweater, Shorts, Shoes, Earrings, Scarf

Colored pants are so hot right now — so carrying this trend over to shorts makes sense. Here I’ve paired these green shorts with a polka-dotted tank and black cardigan. Again, this look can be worn with black tights, but it would look even cooler with a pair of grey cable-knit tights like the ones above. One of the best ways to keep warm is to layer, layer, layer. To do this, add on a parka jacket and chunky knit scarf. Finish the look off with simple heart studs and black penny-loafers.

Outfit #3

For this last look, I knew I had to use cuffed denim shorts, since they’re something most girls already have in their closets. To make them winter appropriate, pair them with a knit sweater and a long black coat. (I’d probably wear it open so you could see the shorts beneath, but it works buttoned-up, too.) For a unique look, try a pair of maroon tights underneath. Simple blue studs add a touch of glam to the look while this spike ring and these studded boots channel a more edgy look.

No longer just for A-Listers, the little red dress has been popping up on the party scene a lot lately, probably because of its dramatic but fun nature. But what about those of us who want to bring a little glamour to our daily looks? Are red dresses totally forbidden? Fortunately for the drama queen in all of us, with the right accessories, a little red dress can be worn day or night.

Little Red Dress: Class

Choosing a cotton dress in a darker shade of red will help make your look more appropriate for day, even before you add your key layering pieces. For a class-appropriate outfit with a funky ’70s vibe, layer a tan blazer over the dress and add a houndstooth print scarf. Choose an emerald bag to contrast (and complement!) the dark red of the dress, and add polka dot tights for some extra feminine detail. Finish off the look with black military-inspired boots to give yourself a little more edge.

A great tunic top can take a girl far. Not only are tunics perfect layering pieces, they’re also appropriate in nearly every situation you can find yourself in. From lounging around the dorm to making leggings a little more class-appropriate, tunics are undeniably a college girl’s closet’s best (and most versatile) friend. Best of all, you can wear them day or night.

This week, I’ll be showing you how to take a basic, long-sleeved gray tunic and wear it from Chem lab on to a wild night out with friends – all you need is a quick styling change.

A fun graphic tote keeps you looking casual and helps you lug around your heavy books in style!

For a night out look, either keep your basic leggings from class or switch to a (faux) leather pair to take the look to the next level. Liquid leggings might seem like a risky choice, but the tunic provides all the coverage necessary for you to look like a total rockstar and avoid any embarrassing fashion moments. Cinch in this killer look with a leopard print belt and add some cool stud earrings for an even wilder vibe. Rocker-style ankle booties amp up the rock & roll factor, and a vibrant cross-body bag provides a much-needed pop of color to complete the look.

Personal style on a college budget can be a challenge. Especially when the latest trends change with the seasons… literally. But with a little DIY magic, you can perk up your wardrobe without breaking the bank. That’s just what I aim to prove here – DIY Chic is dedicated to bringing you budget-friendly and super easy do-it-yourself projects.

For our first project, these adorable button stud earrings are about as simple as you can get. I love how they add a youthful and feminine touch to any look and it’s so easy to make them entirely your own. (For more on making jewelry, see our past tutorials on DIY beaded earrings and DIY decoupage earrings.)

Even better, this tutorial is a great way to re-purpose an old item. You know that old button-down shirt or cardigan in your closet – the one you never wear, the one that’s too big or has that unrepairable rip? Before you throw it out, salvage the buttons and take a look at this far-too-easy idea for a new pair of earrings!

What you’ll need:

• Buttons
• Earring posts and backs (available at craft stores)
• Scissors
• Hot glue gun
• Felt (optional)

The step-by-step process:

1. Before you get started, be sure to plug in your hot glue gun and let it heat up. Also be sure to read through the manufacturer’s instructions before use.

2. Pick out your pair of buttons. Experiment with sizes and colors, or get creative with novelty or vintage buttons. Then, grab your earring posts and backs. I found the posts and backs at a craft store for less than $2 for a small bag.

3. The next step is entirely optional, but does make it easier to fasten the buttons to the earring posts. Cut two small squares of felt, in a color that either matches or contrasts with your buttons. Add a small dab of glue and press the button onto the felt until dry. Then, trim away the extra felt.

4. Finally, add another dab of glue and secure the earring post to the back of the button. Of course, you’ll want to let the earrings dry and cool completely.

And there you go! A simple, quick, and inexpensive way to add a new pair of adorable earrings to your jewelry collection. I think this project would also make a great gift for a best friend, sister, or roommate.

Dresses are the staples of every college girl’s night-out wardrobe. Sometimes it feels like wearing anything else is cheating, especially if the dress isn’t little and black. But LBDs aren’t exactly class-appropriate, and let’s face it, they can get so boring! That doesn’t mean you can’t dress a little fancier for class, or for an evening out. This week, I’ll be showing you how a simple colorblock dress can easily make the switch from day to night.

Colorblocked clothing became a hot trend this spring, but pulling off a mix of colors can be difficult – especially in the winter. Since you’re probably not going to an ’80s-themed party, stick with a dress with only two or three colors, and make sure at least one is a neutral. This lets you test the waters of the trend while still matching most of your other clothes and accessories.

Create a comfortable (and warm!) look for class by layering a cozy cardigan over the dress. This tones down the drama of the colorblocking and gives you a cool, slightly undone vibe. Transitioning this dress from day to night is all about amping up the style and adding sparkle, without going over-the-top. Colorblocking can be really dramatic, especially when black is involved, so there’s no need to go crazy with accessories. A clutch in a contrasting color accents the dress perfectly, while basic black ankle strap wedges are a trendy way to give yourself some height. And make sure to keep the tights if it’s going to be freezing outside!

For the finishing touches, put on some pretty jewelry, add some sparkle to your nails for a touch of wintery glamor, and you’re all set. For bonus classy points, put up your hair in a simple bun, or leave it in loose, natural waves for a wilder look.

One of the worst things about dorm living is the limited closet space, especially when you don’t have room for your two separate wardrobes – one for class, and one for going out. It can be frustrating to decide what gets hung up and what gets shoved under the bed in storage, not to mention the pain of having to completely change outfits just to go out for a few hours at night.

Luckily, it doesn’t have to be like this. So many basic pieces can be worn for day or night – saving you your closet space, and your sanity. With just a few changes, you can wear the same thing you wore to class to any evening event, from out with the girls to a dinner date with the BF.

This week, I’ll be covering a wardrobe staple every college girl can dig out of her closet – the basic black tank top.

Basic Black Tank: Class

Dressing for class doesn’t have to be boring, even with such a simple basic. The best part about a black tank is that it goes with absolutely everything, so feel free to have fun with it! Here, you have room to get really creative with accessories and set yourself apart from everyone else.

For class, you can pair your black tank with a cozy cardigan and skinny jeans or leggings for a look that’s both stylish and comfortable. Shoes should also be functional enough to trek across campus, but cute enough to snag some compliments. (If you live somewhere icy, you’ll probably want to swap the Sperry’s for winter boots right now!) Finish off the look with a satchel for your books and a fun necklace.

Basic Black Tank: Night Out

Night is the perfect time to make a statement with your shoes, so try out some cool heeled boots. Pretty earrings and a metallic clutch are fun, but simple accessories.

I am in desperate need of shoe advice! I can no longer wear high heels for long periods after breaking my ankle last year. I’m about to graduate and move to a really large city — one with a nightlife that definitely requires dressing up on a regular basis. I’ve looked at other girls for inspiration, but they all wear heels! Do you have any suggestions for stylish flat shoes that would be appropriate for swanky nightclubs? What about cocktail parties and weddings?

I am sorry to hear about your broken ankle. But even though you can’t wear heels for long periods of time, you can still get dressed up for more formal events without having to sacrifice style.

Since you will now be wearing flats often, I would suggest investing in some dressier flats if you don’t have some already. Little details like rhinestones, sequins, bows, or even just high quality materials and craftsmanship will provide that formal feel.

You might have to get a little creative with your outfits, and it might be challenging to transition at first (especially if you are used to wearing heels to formal events), but with a little experimentation and imagination you can surely find a look that is sure to make others envious of your style and pain-free soles. Here are a few ideas to get you started. Enjoy!

Outfit #1: Nightclub

One way to wear flats to a nightclub is to try a pair of boots. Pairing them with a velvet, peplum mini-dress will ensure that your look is right on trend. Accessorize the look with some dangly earrings, a statement cocktail ring, and an envelope clutch. Finally, swipe on your favorite eye-catching lip color and you’ll be ready to hit the town! And if boots aren’t your style, you can easily swap them out for a nice pair of sandals or ballet flats.

Outfit #2: Cocktail Party

For a unique look at your next cocktail party, try wearing this red blazer over a cream-colored, pleated dress. Add on a statement necklace for another eye-catching touch. Finally, accessorize the look with some gold bangle bracelets, pretty drop earrings, and a whimsical ruffled bag.

Happy New Year, CF readers! To start 2012 off right, I’ve come up with four fabulous fashion and style-related resolutions for the new year. Scroll on down to check ‘em out:

1. Purge and organize your wardrobe.

This is always a popular resolution, but for a good reason: having a clutter-free closet not only looks good, but makes getting dressed in the mornings a lot less stressful.

Start by getting rid everything that you don’t need or haven’t worn in over a year. This means parting with outdated trends, worn out items or pieces that no longer fit. Donate or sell the gently-used pieces and toss anything that’s beyond repair.

Once your closet is organized, keep it that way. Hang clothes back up, fold items neatly and always put your shoes back where they belong. If you take a few minutes every day to maintain it,  your closet shouldn’t get disorganized again.

2. Discover your signature style.

This one’s a little bit tougher, but this year, try to develop your signature style. A signature style could be defined by a piece of jewelry, a style of clothing or a specific kind item you always wear, like T. Swift’s sequined dresses.

To find your signature style, think about what you like to wear or what kind of pieces your drawn to. Do you always wear dresses? Love your Converse? Like to pile on costume jewelry? Once you have an idea of what you’re attracted to, try making a style pinboard or binder for more inspiration and to further define your aesthetic.

3. Challenge yourself, style-wise.

Depending on your lifestyle, this resolution is open to interpretation, but the basic premise is to go outside your comfort zone when it comes to fashion. Check out these ideas below, or make up your own!

• If you wear jeans 24/7,  try swapping out your beloved denim 2 or 3 days a week for skirts or dresses.
• You can banish certain items from your wardrobe, like rubber flip flops or hoodies.
• Brush aside those silly rules about what you “can and can’t” wear and wear what you want, however you want to.
• Have you been wanting to start a fashion blog but never got around to it? Go to WordPress, Blogger or Tumblr and make one. Now!
• Tackle a style challenge, like the 30 for 30 Remix (pictured above) or one of our other favorites.

4. Don’t be afraid to splurge every now and then!

I used to be quite the tightwad when it came to frivolous purchases, but lately I’ve realized that it’s absolutely okay to splurge once in a while. As Tom Haverford from Parks and Recreation would say, treat yo’ self.

This year, celebrate acing your finals, scoring your dream internship or another special occasion by splurging on an item (or two!) that you’ve been coveting. Depending on your financial situation, a splurge could be $20 or $500, but whatever the budget, just remember to buy something that you’ll actually wear!
