I was so excited to see all of your responses on my first study abroad post! The number of comments was so great that I decided to change up my approach a little bit for the rest of the articles. While I still want to do specific posts on exact locations, I figured I would take this time first to clear up some of the questions and comments from last week’s introductory article.

And be sure to read all the way to the end of this article for a chance to be featured in one of the future “What Do I Wear There? Study Abroad…” posts!

1. Personal Style Abroad

Reader Milana commented last week, asking:

“Why not bring your personal style abroad? Especially here in Europe we appreciate the fact that people are different. Be fabulous and be yourself anywhere you go. With the Internet it is not hard to figure out the temperature of the country you’re going to, so pack your style and have an awesome stay!”

And she is absolutely correct! I did not mean to give the impression that you should sacrifice your personal style when you go abroad. What I’m really aiming to do is give you some idea of what the current trends are in these different areas, as well as the expectations you can have for the climate there. As Debbie said,

“I’m all for taking your own style with you, but it can get a little uncomfortable sometimes if it doesn’t mesh with the country you’re living in!”

However, I want to thank Milana for pointing this out and reinforce that you should definitely bring your personal style with you wherever you go! Even if you don’t have a lot of space to pack all of your favorites, you can certainly express yourself through jewelry and accessories (which I will focus more on in following articles).

2. Respect the Culture

Lianne also made an important point in last week’s comments, saying:

“Although this is a very good idea for a series of posts, I do think the most important piece of advice anyone could take with them while traveling abroad is missing and that is to consider the cultural standards of the area. I love my summer skirts, but they’re not acceptable in a number of nations by cultural practice alone and it’s important to recognize and respect that.”

This is another great point. Since I had not yet pinpointed which locales I was covering, I had not yet mentioned this, but it is definitely important to heed the standards of appropriate dressing when you go abroad. As Lalalina suggested in the comments,

“For you girls going to Muslim countries, it is really important that you see if your program can provide you with a past participant to talk to, they will let you know if you need to wear a hijab or head scarf. Morocco is less conservative, but you SHOULD NOT wear any tank tops (without something on top) or cap sleeve shirts, and nothing low cut. You should stick with pants and longer skirts. And in terms of being stylish there, I looked a lot to the local girls, they knew how to cover up and be cute.”

The idea of talking to people who had already been there is great! You’ll hear about what they found to be appropriate and what their experience has taught them about the style there. It’s invaluable knowledge.

I also wanted to note that as Katharin said, even if you are going to a place like London or Paris that has less cultural restrictions on style, it is important to bring along some more conservative clothing if you plan on visiting any churches or going sightseeing in any other places of worship.

3. Check the Weather

CF reader Tamara pointed out how crazy it would be to try to literally pack for all weather, saying,

“About the post, I think it’s good, but I also feel no one should make a suitcase for “any” weather, that’s just impossible. You should check the weather on the internet before picking up your clothes: even if you’re staying away more than one season, I live in Argentina and I know our winters might feel like Canadian springs (for example), for example, so you wouldn’t need a super warm jacket or super warm boots.”

Now, I admit that I may be a little bit biased in what I suggested for basics (considering how excited I am for London!), as I know that I am going to have to deal with colder, rainier weather. However, it is super important that you check the weather for where you are going!

Try to see if you can find the average temperatures for the month you are arriving and the month you are departing so that you can figure out the range. Also, see if you can figure out how rainy/humid/dry it is, which is good to know not just for packing clothing but also for packing beauty supplies.

Remember: just because the season is still labeled “winter” does not mean it is the winter you are used to!

4. Study Abroad Inspiration

In my last post, I suggested looking for style blogs from locals in the area you are going to. However, I understand that finding a good blog for fashion inspiration can be tough to do! Therefore, I suggest going to Lookbook.nu.

Lookbook is an amazing style site in which members submit pictures of the creative outfits they donned that day. The best part is that LookBook members are literally from all over the world, so they are perfect examples of fashion from abroad! If you click the “search” button, a list will appear along the right side of the page with search criteria, including the option to sort by country.

Here are just some of the inspiring looks I found after doing a quick search!

5. Expert Advice

Lalalina kindly requested in the comments that I get some expert opinions from seasoned study abroad-ers in these articles, noting,

“Colleen I mean you no disrespect, but all of you with specific location questions should really consult someone who has been where you are going. They can give you the best advice on the fashion in those places.”

I completely agree! I was planning on asking some of my upperclassmen friends who traveled for advice, but then I saw all of the great comments from you guys who live outside of the United States and/or have previously studied abroad. So many of you were so helpful, detailed, and thorough that I thought I would first turn to you guys for advice!

No matter whose looks you like, try to get a complete sense of their fashion persona and find ways to make it your own. The goal is to create a look that is influenced by your muse, but is also distinctly your own. Take what you learn, but stay true to yourself! Not sure who you want to emulate? • Make a list of defining pieces to purchase. There are always a few key articles that totally embody the look you’re going for, so take note! Whether it’s cowboy boots, scarves, or skinny jeans, write them down, pick your favorites and get shopping! This is also helpful if you’re thinking in terms of color. Does your new style include a pastel pink or a vampy red? If it epitomizes your style, write it down! You’ve got yourself a list of must-haves.

• Shop some new stores! Whether they’re vintage boutiques, thrift stores, or mall shops, try to branch out and shop at some new stores! Online shopping is a great way to do this because you can preview the merchandise of a certain store and see what you like before you go in and try things on. Try browsing online stores you’ve never been to, or discounted stores you usually pass by. You may be surprised with what you find!

• Start small! Try adding one or two new pieces in with the things you already wear. For example, if you’ve been a pretty conservative or traditional dresser and you’re going for a rocker vibe, try swapping your flared jeans for black skinnies, or topping your outfit with a leather jacket for some edge. This way, you’ll get a dose of edgy style, but still look and feel like yourself.

• Proceed with caution. There’s nothing wrong with slowly creating a new look! In fact, easing into a style change is one of the best ways to make your transformation genuine. The best style changes don’t happen overnight! Incorporate new pieces little by little, until they become second nature is a key part of developing your new personal style.

• Never stop expanding your collection! If you buy clothes that fit into a bunch of different categories, you’re always going to have something cool to wear on the days you feel sporty or the days you feel like a trend-setter. Go ahead and mix and match! Who says you have to have a fashion uniform 24/7? Try anything and everything out!

As you continue to make these subtle changes with your style, you’ll eventually evolve your style into something totally unique and YOU! Remember, a confident girl can get away with wearing almost anything, so if you’re ever feeling unsure about your outfit, tell yourself you look amazing and fake it until you feel it!

(500) Days of Summer is a great love story with a twist. Our muse for fashion inspiration is Summer Finn (played by Zooey Deschanel). Men flock to Summer, whose mysterious ways and apathy towards relationships and love takes viewers (and her suitors) on an offbeat ride. The best part about Summer is that her style is very relatable and down-to-earth.

With so many cute outfits in this movie, I have decided to focus on two major fashion motifs in this film: the little blue dress and vintage-inspired separates.

Summer’s LBD: The Little Blue Dress

I love the motif of the little blue dress in this movie because it is totally a reflection of Summer’s eccentric character. The little blue dress is a great alternative to the classic black version, and if you’re really keen on Summer’s interpretation, I would recommend vintage-inspired versions that feature feminine details, such as lace, bows, or a whimsical print.

Separates are always great for college students because mixing and matching is key to getting the most bank for your buck. Are You Inspired?

So many of you discussed your love for vintage clothing in the comments section of my previous posts, which made me smile from ear to ear because I love history. I think it’s important to understand how fashion has evolved and why it has changed over the years. So I am going to go through the decades starting with the 1920s through 1990 and talk about what was popular in the world of fashion. We’re trying something new this week.

In case you are wondering, I got a lot of the fashion information for this post from Nina Garcia’s Little Black Book of Style. It’s a great read and it goes over almost every aspect of what it takes to be a stylish woman. The historical information also partly comes from my spending too many hours watching the history channel or being over-enthused in every history class I’ve ever taken.

1920s:

Fashion in the 1920s was all about the flapper girls with their dropped waist dresses, boyish silhouettes, and bobbed haircuts. This marked a period of a booming economy and the emergence of women in the workforce in general. Think Daisy in The Great Gatsby.

Some of the trends included drop waists, long necklaces, hats, and pastel and muted colors. Where I go for 1920s inspired pieces is the 1928 jewelry line at Kohl’s. Here are some more 1920s inspired pieces!

1930s:

So the 1930s were basically defined by the Great Depression. Men and women needed to work together in order to keep their families afloat, therefore almost undoing the progress that feminists had made in the previous decade.

This return to the classic women was reflected through the return to feminine clothing. The decade was also defined by the emergence of the film industry. This is where the term “Hollywood Glam” originated. Here is some 1930s inspired pieces!

1940s:

In the 1940s, we were involved in World War II. Women were left at home and had to start doing the more masculine tasks, like working in the factories or tending the farm. I always think of the movie A League of their Own, when the women all played baseball while the men were at war, as a great example of what was going on in the ’40s.

So because of this, fashion was transitioning from ultra-feminine looks to something a bit more practical. Military looks became big, but so did the classic hour glass figure. Also hosiery was very popular. Allie in The Notebook is a perfect example of a movie character who donned 1940s clothing at its finest. Here are some 1940s inspired pieces!

1950s:

In the 1950s, the world began to suburbanize and for the first time, middle class families had a decent amount of spending money due to the economic boom. This in turn made shopping a major leisure activity. Things like costume jewelry, high heels, pencil skirts and volume became very popular. Need a visual? 1960s:

Ah, sixties mod! While the world was going through major social transitions, short hems and bright clothing took the world by storm. Style, at that time, was meant to make a statement–think go-go boots or wild prints. Colorblocking and cut outs were also huge. Also, the ’60s marked the beginning of ready to wear clothing lines in stores. When it comes to 1960s clothing, the musical lover in me adores the clothes in Hairspray.

1970s:

During the 1970s, social change and protests swept the world, specifically at colleges. People were getting married later in life, women were entering the workforce much more frequently, and the environment became a major issue. The whole peace and love thing also comes from the early 1970s (as well as the ’60s) and the popular styles reflected that. Things like bell bottom pants, natural fabrics, bohemian style and disco were very popular. Jenny from Forest Gump is a good example of a girl whose clothing was affected by the time.

1980s:

I love the ’80s simply because I am a child of the decade… well at least for three months. Most college girls these days are ’80s kids! Fashion was hit by the Japanese invasion in the 1980s and style reflected just that. Off-the-shoulder tops, bright colors, shoulder pads and big hair marked this decade. Think of when Brittany Snow plays Lily on Gossip Girl. Not only does that episode have quality clothing, but also some quality music.

1990s:

Fashion in the 1990s was most defined by the grunge look. The grunge movement was propelled by music, but grunge fashion first appeared on the runway thanks to Marc Jacobs. Also, grunge was a throwback to simpler clothing (in contrast to the excess of the ’80s) and was inspired by the minimalist movement in art. A good example of a ’90s fashionista is Cher from Clueless.

Accessories can make an outfit, and they’re even more important in the winter when we find ourselves wrapped up in layers of sweaters and coats. So here are my picks for the best vintage-inspired gloves, hats, and bags, plus tips to finding great pieces like these in vintage and thrift shops!

Gloves

I go to college in Idaho, so gloves are a must-have in the winter months! I love the leather gloves here from John Lewis and ASOS, but I also love the fingerless mittens – they fit over the palm of your hand, so if you’re running to class they would be perfect, because you can still easily take notes or type with them on!

To find a perfect set of warm gloves in a vintage or thrift store, look for a glove that fits perfectly and is made of a sturdy fabric – wool, fleece, and leather (faux leather can also be found!) are great options. For the added fashion factor, make sure the glove has an interesting detail: the gloves I featured have buttons or a nice cuff that just make them pop.

How to Wear Vintage-Inspired Gloves

This would be a great outfit for wearing to class or running errands around town. The moto jacket and straight leg jeans are classic pieces that anchor the outfit, while the sweater, booties, and gloves all have an element of visual interest, and a casual multistrand necklace adds a pop of color and sparkle.

Hats

I love how cloche hats have started to make a comeback in fashion: they are one of my favorite trends this year because they look so chic with just about everything! In general, I’m a hat-loving girl – berets, beanies, billed caps, fur trapper hats… I could go on and on about what kind of hats I love. I picked three different examples with three different personalities: the cloche hat is classic; the beret is chic with its black, velvet bow; and the beanie hat is all about cuteness and youth!

When looking for hats in vintage and thrift stores, make sure the fabric is washable – you never want to just start wearing a hat that you haven’t cleaned! Look for a hat that fits comfortably over your hair – not too tight, but not too big either. Also, make sure it compliments the shape of your face, as well as the length and style of your hair. As always, look for a unique piece with visual interest: a bow, a ribbon, or a pom-pom can set you apart!

How to Wear a Vintage-Inspired Hat

I created this outfit with classic but youthful pieces in mind. The fabric of the skirt is a satin material that has a slight sheen to it, so pairing this visually interesting skirt with the cloche hat means keeping the other pieces as simple as possible. With this in mind, I chose practical flats, a plain black top, and a classic grey peacoat! To add another simple pop of color, I chose pretty amethyst earrings. You could easily trade the flats for heels, the peacoat for a trench coat, and the black top for any sweater and the outfit would look just as chic!

Bags

It can seem really daunting to look for a new bag in a vintage or thrift shop: there are tons of them! I decided to show you guys three very different examples. Firstly, there is the Modcloth clutch, which is slightly dressy and perfect for a night out. Next, there is the cream quilted bag, which is another classic piece that would be totally appropriate for work or a night out. Thirdly, there is the black Modcloth bag which would be great for day because it has a simple shape and would work with any outfit.

When looking for a bag in a vintage or thrift shop, keep these tips in mind: look for classic shapes and colors, such as cream and black, but don’t be afraid of more wild bags with a lot of visual interest – just make sure you have items you can pair it with! As always, look for any flaws, especially if the purse has lining, and check all the pockets for debris. If the purse is really dirty, I would recommend not buying it; fabrics that are used to make purses, such as vinyl and leather, can be really difficult to clean!

How to Wear a Vintage-Inspired Bag

I am in love with this sequin shrug! It will provide a little coverage over this strapless bandage dress; as well, it mimics the sheen in the blue clutch. Paired with some beautiful chandelier earrings and some classic black heels, this would be a great outfit to wear somewhere “fancy” – a dinner party, a date, etc.!

So what do I wear there? I have no idea what the temperature will be like and how I should go about packing for all occasions that may come up when I can only bring two suitcases.

Please help and write a post about this!! I think a lot of people would benefit from it!!”

After reading all of your comments last week, I definitely think Katie was right. It seems like a lot of us, including myself, are going abroad next semester and are starting to worry about the thought of packing our lives up into only TWO suitcases for four or so months!

Yikes!

However, I realized that there is no way I can cover all of the clothes needed for studying abroad in just one article since we are all going to different places. Therefore, I decided to split this post up into multiple parts.

This week’s post is about study abroad clothing basics, pieces that will work most places that you will enter in cold weather and leave in spring. I have included some key must-bring pieces, as well as some study abroad tips and tricks!

For the next few installments, I’d like to personalize the articles for specific study abroad destinations CF readers are going to. So if you are planning on going abroad, tell me your planned study abroad location in the comments! Whichever sites are named the most will be the ones I highlight in the series.

Take-With-You Tops

The most important thing to think about when packing clothes for travel is versatility! Since you don’t have a lot of packing space, you want to make sure you can get a lot of wear out of all the pieces you bring.

This basic v-neck is great for the days you just want to be comfortable but still look cute. It would also be a good choice to wear on the plane since you definitely want something casual and easy. (For more tips on what to wear when traveling, check out What Do I Wear There? Airplane Outfits and Tips.) You can also change this up by adding a vest, cardigan, scarf, etc. when it is colder.

The next top I suggest bringing is your favorite going-out tank top. I love this gorgeous one from TopShop, which would be perfect for going out in cooler weather under a blazer or on its own in the spring. It is also a good versatile piece since it’s nice but not too fancy–if needed, you could pair it with a cardigan or sweater and wear it during the day.

Another necessary top is a basic cardigan in a neutral color. This will go with anything and can be worn under a coat in the winter or over a sundress as it gets warmer.

Finally, pack a tunic top that you can wear with jeans or with leggings to vary your look. This plaid one is especially useful because you can also wear it unbuttoned over a simple tank for yet another outfit!

Must-Bring Bottoms

This area is slightly more personalized for each traveler. While I suggest that everyone bring at least one of the above, if you hate leggings or are not a fan of wearing tights, stock up on the other items instead (or suggest what you would bring instead in the comments)!

As far as bottoms go, the number one item to bring is your favorite pair of jeans! Wearable in most weather, jeans are ideal for class, weekend trips, and days spent simply exploring. Definitely only bring pairs you have broken in, as new jeans may prove to be uncomfortable and stiff.

Leggings are another great staple to pack with you, especially since they take up such little room! A simple black pair can be worn day or night under pretty much any color, layered under dresses, etc.

For slightly warmer nights, bring a couple pairs of tights. Basic black is always a smart choice, but since tights are so compact, feel free to also slip in some fun pairs (such as the colored ones seen above or patterned ones). Tights allow you to bring your spring dresses and skirts into winter, so they are definitely a smart choice!

While many people swear by the “little black dress,” I happen to be obsessed with the “little black skirt” instead! I have a plain one from American Apparel that I seriously wear everywhere–it’s great with tights and a flannel for class or with a fun top for a night out! I love the side panels on this one, as they ensure a flattering fit.

Other Outfit Essentials

As much as I love my black skirts, I definitely do not mean to diss the little black dress! This is a must-bring, especially if you find one with a pretty lace pattern like this. It can be worn anywhere from a dinner with some new foreign friends to a night time event to a night out on the (new) town!

I also suggest bringing a good “day” dress for days when you may be taking a trip with your classmates and want to look a little nicer. I am in love with the interesting construction of this striped dress–it’s totally fun and original! The simple design and coloring will also carry you through both winter and spring with appropriate accessories.

As I mentioned earlier, a blazer is a really smart piece to invest in this season and bring with you when you go abroad. It can be dressed down for class or dressed up for work or going out. Black is probably the best color to get this in, as that is the most acceptable color if you plan on wearing it for work.

Finally, in addition to the cardigan I suggested above, bring along a simple sweater. This is another great item you can easily throw on in the morning before class that will still keep you looking cute. A more lightweight sweater like this one is ideal since you can layer it over a heavier long-sleeved shirt in the winter for warmth or over a tank top on a chillier spring day.

Note: I know these may seem like a LOT of shoes to bring given luggage space issues, but I wanted to show a large array since this is a general post. Don’t feel like you have to pack all of these!

Going in the same order as the Product Information above, I’ll start with the ever-essential ballet flat. Great for work or nicer functions, a ballet flat will not take up much room in your suitcase and will add class to any outfit.

While it may seem crazy for many of us to think of wearing sandals with the weather we have right now, one of the tough parts of packing for study abroad is remembering to anticipate that warmer weather. Therefore, you’ll want to bring along a pair of your favorite sandals for when the spring weather comes!

Since you’ll undoubtedly want to go out at night to nicer places at least once, bring along a great–and comfortable!–pair of heels. Nude pumps are currently my favorite heels, as they go with everything and are unexpected compared to basic black pumps.

In contrast to the heels, you’ll want to bring along a pair of super comfy, flat sneakers for the days when you really want to go exploring and see all of the sights. Remember that just because they are sneakers does not mean they cannot be cute–printed sneakers are everywhere lately and are a great addition to a regular jeans and tee-shirt outfit!

For the weather right now, your favorite worn-in boots are a must! I suggest wearing these on the plane since they will take up the most room in your suitcase. Make sure to bring a pair that you can wear with jeans, tights, and leggings to get maximum use out of them.

Finally, if you happen to be going to a rainier climate, you’ll certainly want to be prepared with a pair of rain boots. These black and brown ones are super sleek and the rubbery material will even allow you to fold them when you go to pack!

Some Study Abroad Tips

• Don’t bring anything you have never worn! The last thing you want is to waste space on something that ends up being uncomfortable, ill-fitting, or simply unnecessary. Try everything on before you go.
• Be sure to stock up on your favorite brand name beauty products, as they may not be available overseas.
• Look at fashion blogs from the place you are going for some outfit inspiration as you are packing. This will also help you see what is appropriate to wear there, as well as what is in style.
• As I have mentioned throughout the article, don’t forget to look ahead! Just because it is cold now does not mean it will be when you leave in May.
• On that note, try to pack lighter pieces that are easy to layer. These will take up less space than bulkier items and layering your clothes will give your outfits more diversity.
• Bring along plenty of accessories: jewelry, scarves, hats, and hairpieces–since you cannot bring lots of clothes, these will allow you to add something new and different to your looks.
• Leave space in your suitcase for all of the fabulous purchases you will make!

A colorful or patterned scarf can totally change your entire look. Whether you wear it tied around your neck, as a belt, swinging from your purse, or as a head wrap, you’ll get lots of millage out of these little guys.

Scarves are a great way to add some spice to an ordinary outfit–choose a chunky knit for added texture, patterns for pizazz, or neons for an added burst of color. It all depends how you want to wear it!

2. Jewelry.

As any Rachel Zoe fan would know, accessories are one of the easiest ways to change up an outfit. You can pile on an arm full of bangles, show off a giant cocktail ring, or rock a bib necklace to make your every day look stand out from the pack.

My personal favorite jewelry tip is to wear great statement earrings–chandelier or door-knocker styles work nicely–a favorite ring, and a simple bracelet for a quick dose of style-infused fun. I’m sure fellow CF intern Michelle would agree that brooches are also great accent jewelry if you’re looking to update your style! Try pinning one on a cardigan or scarf, or even wearing it in your hear as a head piece!

3. Shoes.

I have a confession to make: I’m not a shoe girl. Unbelievable, I know. I also know, however, that a hot pair of shoes is sometimes all you need to completely change up an ordinary outfit.

Usually wear flip flops or flats? Try a pair of knee-high boots with your skinny jeans! In heels all the time? Invest in a pretty pair of flats or moccasins! Whatever you choose, if you’re looking to create a really interesting look, try playing with unexpected patterns or colors. I love patent, animal print, and metallics, just to name a few shoe trends.

4. Headbands.

I may not be a shoe girl, but I absolutely LOVE headbands! There are so many styles out there: from statement headbands to basics, and thin bands to ultra-wide, 60’s style pieces. The list goes on and on, with each pick more fabulous than the last.

If you’re looking to really change an outfit, a statement headband is the way to go. Not only will it push that hair off of your pretty face, but it’ll also instantly complete that outfit of yours! This season, look for styles with feathers, braided details, or jewels if you’re looking to update a favorite look!

5. Jackets.

Jackets are an extremely simple way to completely change the look of your outfit!

Ditch your North Face fleece for the day in favor of something that’ll pack a style punch. Depending on the weather, you could pick a trench, leather jacket, peacoat, or denim jacket, or just throw on a brightly colored cardigan for a quick style update. Wearing a different jacket is even more noticeable if you tend to stick to a certain style or color, and since it’s such a major article of clothing, it’s often the first thing people notice about your outfit. Change this one item up, and they’ll probably forget you’re wearing an outfit you’ve worn a million times before!

You know those days when you plan to wake up early, go to the gym, look over your notes, and straighten your hair all before your 9 AM class, but in reality, you end up oversleeping until oh, 8:30? I do! We’ve all been there.

On days like these, even with under 20 minutes, you still have just enough time to get ready and keep it cute! No need for sweats and bed-head when you’ve got this guide!

Hair:

When you’re short on time, it’s best to skip anything that’s going to alter the natural texture of your hair. Today is not the day to straighten, curl, or crimp–just work with what you’ve got with one of these styles!

First, get rid of grease and dirt with a quick spray of dry shampoo. (Not sure which brand to try? See our list of the best dry shampoos.) Now you’re ready to style! Here are some great hairstyles that only take a second.

Messy bun

Messy buns are a great option when you don’t want to deal with your hair, just get it out of your face! Adorable with a headband, chic with side-swept bangs and a beret, and just plain perfect with a braid for those late-to-class days. All you need is a ponytail holder. Pull your hair back like you would for a pony, but stop when you get half way through your hair, fastening the holder around your bun. Separate it, and pull out pieces for an intentionally messy look.

High ponytail

A high pony is definitely my go-to look for late days! All that’s different from everyone’s favorite stand by is placement–go for a pony that’s towards the middle or upper half of your head! This looks great with waves or curls, or with a mini-boufant with your bangs. If you’re feeling especially Nicole Richie, why not try finishing your look with a headscarf and big sunglasses? It will definitely make your walk (run?!) to class feel a bit more glamorous! Also, for extra glamour and a polished look, take a strand of hair from your pony, wrap it around your elastic, and pin in place.

Intentionally Unkempt

If MK&A and Blake Lively can rock messy hair, so can you! Tousled waves can look great with just a little styling effort. Try using a detangling spray or spray gel to get out any tangles, then finger-comb and separate individual waves.

If All Else Fails…

Makeup:

Forget the full face of makeup and pull out a few crucial products for a polished look on the go. Skip eyeliner, foundation, and anything heavy in favor of these quick-coverage basics.

Tinted moisturizer

Two steps in one! What could be better when you’re short on time?!

Use a sponge to swipe tinted moisturizer around your entire face, making sure to blend at your chin and neck. A good tinted moisturizer will cover any blemish redness or dark under-eye circles, so it’s really all you need for quick, medium coverage. Plus, it will keep your skin looking dewy and natural. I love Lancome’s Aqua Fusion Teinté Continuous Infusion Tinted Moisturizer–I use it every day!

Bronzer/Blush

Bronzer or blush is all you need to instantly perk up your face. If you’re going the bronzer route, focus on sweeping the powder lightly over your cheeks, forehead, and nose, areas where the sun would usually hit.

For blush, smile! Focus on getting the apples of your cheeks for a sunny, natural look. As temperatures drop, dry skin can be a concern, so cream or gel blushes, as well as cheek stains, can be a great option.

Mascara

Though you’ll probably want to skip your lengthening formulas with two-step processes, a single swipe of black or clear mascara on your upper lashes will really help to open your eyes and polish up your look! My go-to mascara when I need to get up and go is definitely Neutrogena Healthy Volume in Carbon Black. It has a giant brush, dries quickly, and provides great better-than-natural length and volume. Any of your favorite brands will work, just remember to skip your bottom lashes!

Lip gloss, stain, or balm

Short on time? It’s easy to finish up your look with a tinted lipgloss, stain, or balm!

You can easily put lip products on en-route as well, to save time! Try a gloss for a pretty, flirty look, a stain for something dramatic, or a balm for a moisturizing punch! I love Smith’s Rosebud Salve because it smells great, gives some sheer color, moisturizes, and can even be used on cheeks in a pinch! As an added bonus, it’s vintage tin is adorable. Just toss it in your bag and go!

We all know to avoid wearing sweatpants or PJ’s to class, but what do you actually put on if you’re really late? Something basic and cute, naturally!

This is the perfect time to pull out leggings and a long tunic if you’re feeling fashion-forward, jeans and a cardigan with cute flats for classic look, or even a dress with boots if the weather allows! All of these options are comfortable and quick. Pick them out, put them on, and go!

If you know you’ll be short on time some mornings, it can be really helpful to lay your outfits out the night before. That way, you can have a totally styled outfit ready to go as soon as you wake up.

The Sex and the City movie was greatly anticipated after the show ended its reign on HBO. Sex and the City is inspiring for numerous reasons. First, both the show and the movie gave audiences a taste of New York City lifestyle that many find intriguing. (Even if it’s not the most realistic portrayal!) Second, each of the four friends has her own personality and style, so we can all find at least one girl we can relate to!

The movie is centered around Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her wedding to the infamous Mr. Big. From wedding bells to baby plans to relationship turmoil, Sex and the City will keep your eyes glued to the screen!

I will review each major character’s style, including some must-have items inspired by the characters.

1. Carrie Bradshaw

Carrie is the protagonist the audience loves to watch because her mannerisms are quirky and girly. She is known for her open writing style, addiction to designer shoes, and her on-again/off-again smoking habits.

Her outfits frequently mix high-end “splurge” items with vintage/”save” items, and always have a pop of color or an interesting texture. I also noticed that Carrie’s wardrobe in the movie also had a floral motif! Here are my favorite Carrie-inspired items:

A few weeks ago in my Brilliant Blogger article, I called out all of you everyday-jean-wearers by challenging you to mix things up by wearing skirts and dresses. And while a lot of you liked this idea, a few of you mentioned how you found them to be somewhat impractical for school, especially those of you who are expected to wear jeans everyday or work with things like dangerous chemicals.

Because of this, I thought I’d whip out this article on jeans to give you some fresh perspective and ideas on how to wear them without sacrificing style for function. After all, just because you have to wear them every day doesn’t mean you can’t still look chic!

The Skinny Jean:

Skinnies have been all the rage for almost five years now, and I don’t see them losing steam anytime soon. They show off your legs, are instantly slimming, and they can even make you look taller! I’ve chosen three types of skinnies to help aid you in your style quest.

Read on to find out how you can wear everyday denim skinnies, the classic black skinny jean, and the modern day colored skinny jean effortlessly on campus.

Basic Denim Skinnies:

Denim skinnies come in many different washes and colors. But if you are going for an easygoing everyday look, medium washes are best- especially for school.

To keep this light, breezy look going, I chose a cute red flannel to wear on top and a nice, cozy knitted cardigan to keep you warm. Finally, for your toes I chose some cute ruffled ballet flats and topped off the outfit with a shiny gold ring with a sparkly blue center stone.

This outfit is a perfect “Oh, this old thing? I just grabbed some stuff on my way out the door” look: stylish while still looking school appropriate, colorful, and best of all comfy.

Black Skinny Jeans:

Black skinnies are the ultimate classy piece of denim. They go with everything, are super sleek, and make your stems look nice and long.

While one could go the conservative route when wearing these jeans (ie: Risky Business style shirt + Pants), you could also opt for a cool rocker look to give the black skinny a nice modern twist. To do this, I chose a nice grey graphic tee and paired it with a black circle scarf (which you can learn to make for free! check out my tutorial on circle scarves here!). Then, I chose a silver studded bracelet to give your arm a little sparkle and edge. Lastly, I chose the cutest little fringe moccasins you’ve ever seen for you to slip your feet into. That’s it! Whether you’re off to a concert or “slappin’ da bass” across campus, you’ll be sure to turn heads.

Colorful Skinnies:

The colored skinny is a fairly new addition to the skinny jean family. And while they can come in many, many, different colors, I for one believe that when it comes to selecting a colored skinny, you should show a little bit of restraint. Yes, those highlighter yellow, neon orange, and eye-watering lime-green skinnies may be calling your name, but it is of my humble opinion that those are far too flashy to be worked into a real person’s wardrobe- leave those to Lady Gaga.

Don’t get me wrong, colored denim is great; you just have to be careful about your choices. For this example, I chose the daring, yet still tasteful, burgundy red skinny jean. Pair those jeans with a cute striped shirt, pop a cute little watch on your wrist, throw on your pointy toed lace-ups and you’ll be ready to roam the streets of Paris…or go to PoliSci.

The Boyfriend Jean:

Ah, the boyfriend jean: easy, loose and free. Perfect for those lazy days when you just roll out of bed and are too tired to wear something tight and confining.

Don’t sweat this look, it’s easy! Just slip on a black racerback tank, a cute red cardigan, slip your arm through a cool bangled bracelet and wrap a cute floral scarf around your neck. Yep… that’s about it. Don’t you wish Calculus was this simple?

The Wide Leg:

The wide leg jean is one of those styles that I’ve coveted for a while, but never gotten around to trying. That’s why I was so excited to make this outfit and live vicariously through you! While these jeans definitely make a statement, I think they are the most tricky to pull off, mostly because when you wear them you have to be aware of proportions.

Overall, it’s safest to make sure the top half of your outfit is fitted so the bottom can be loose. I paired mine with a plain white tee (fitted of course), and a slouchy blue beanie. As for your feet, I chose a pair of comfy, yet stylish Tom’s. (My latest purchase! They are SO comfortable!) Lastly, I picked some jewelry. I pulled a cute turquoise necklace and jade ring. These little details are important because since most of your outfit has no design, the jewelry gives your outfit some interest. And there you go: understated, stylish and so 1960’s fabulous. Let your hair flow freely and you’ll be the hottest bohemian chick on campus.
