Ripped, torn, and otherwise distressed denim is once again in style this spring. This season’s incarnation of the trend, however, is a bit different from how it looked in previous decades. Instead of giving off a rebellious or grungy vibe, spring 2010 ripped denim is all about looking sultry and seductive with a little bit of edge. If you’re dying for a trendy new pair of jeans, pick up some ripped ones, and follow our tips to rock them right.

General Tips on Wearing Ripped Denim

Pick a style. Ripped denim isn’t just for jeans this season! You can find distressed details on a variety of denim styles this season, from shorts to mini skirts to jackets. Pick your favorite piece and go from there.

Consider the occasion. Though some denim pieces (namely dark wash jeans) are usually socially acceptable for wear in dressier situations, distressed denim is very casual and relaxed, and NOT appropriate for a dressy occasion. While torn styles are great for hanging out or running errands, they’re not great going-out options. Also, if your style leans towards prim and proper, you probably won’t find ripped jeans appropriate for classroom wear.

Choose how much you want to show. As a general rule, the smaller the piece, the less distressing it should have. A pair of frayed denim shorts, for example, should be less destroyed than a pair of jeans simply because the cut of the shorts is more revealing. Slashed skinny jeans have been a celebrity favorite, but avoid wearing a slashed mini skirt in an attempt to emulate their look. If you’re ever feeling overexposed, layer! Try a funky pair of tights or leggings under whatever you’re wearing for extra coverage and style.

Spend wisely. You’re buying denim that’s already destroyed, so spend accordingly! Though ripped denim is adorable and gives your style a relaxed Cali-girl vibe, this is a trend that you’re probably not going to want to drop hundreds of dollars on. Feeling creative? Keep an eye on placement. Notice where holes and distressed areas hit on your body. You probably already realize that a gigantic rip near your back pockets isn’t ideal, but also watch out for holes in or near the knees of your jeans. If you plan on bending down or being active, little holes in these areas can become BIG ones very quickly. Also, be careful when putting on ripped jeans! I’ve definitely accidentally stuck my toe into a hole and further ripped it on more than one occasion.

While we may all love fashion on the runways, it seems like many college girls stick to the basics day-to-day in fear of looking out of place on campus. Sometimes I can’t help but feel like certain items just aren’t acceptable on a college campus (especially here, in the Midwest), which makes me sad. Of course, some of you fearless ladies wear what you want to class anyway, but on my campus, this seems like the exception instead of the rule.

So for all of you who, like me, wish that there was a more reasonable way to wear high fashion items on campus, I’ve created this Fashion Challenge feature. Each week I’ll pick a different item, (I’m open to suggestions from you in the comments!) something that is a little more challenging to style, and give you pictures of others wearing the item, resources for finding it, tips, and outfit ideas, so you can fearlessly wear it on campus (and maybe start a new trend) yourself. Today, the challenging item is slouchy pants.

You are probably seeing them everywhere: usually silk or satin, pleated, and tapered, slouchy pants are the new skinny jean. Wearing a pair of silk pants in daylight on campus may seem intimidating, but if you style them right, they make a statement–in a good way!

Tips and Tricks:

• Slouchy pants come in a variety of styles from harem-style to structured and cropped. They also run the spectrum in fabrics: from silk to satin, and even khaki. So don’t be afraid to try a few on before you find what works for you!
• Remember that if you choose silk or satin, they aren’t as forgiving as some other fabrics and can cling in strange places. Choose your undergarments accordingly.
• Slouchy pants can be dressed up, as Ms. Missoni proves above, but it can also be casual campus wear. Karla, in picture one, dresses down her silk trousers with a classic denim jacket. Looking for more silky inspiration? Check out Karla’s website: She wears silk pants on a regular basis!

• Slouchy pants are great for every body type. While they are narrow in the legs, they are very forgiving in the hips. Just be sure to pick a fabric that flatters your body.

Sticking to basics with a few eye-catching accessories is a great way to try something new while remaining in your comfort zone. Versace’s Spring RTW collection for 2010 was immediately one of my favorites when it came down the runway last year. A wave of pastel pinks, bright yellows and detailed micro mini skirts gave off the quintessential Versace vibe, but with a new spin. The house has always been known for revealing, skin-tight clothing but this Spring, Donatella upped the class factor with blouses and suits.

Vivid pastels, geometric prints, baroque curlicues, short-short skirts, and slinky, sexy chain mail: Where else could this be but Versace? For Spring, Donatella Versace was telling everyone who went backstage that she’d been inspired by Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland…In their tiny pelmet skirts, jazzily printed dresses, and super-fitted suitings, the girls were all legs and glossy hair—quintessential Versace women (though, it has to be said, still quite a lot thinner than they used to be in Gianni’s day). That’s a powerful sight to see on any runway, but somehow none of it came across as too slavishly reverential or in any way vulgar. – Style.com

We all know that Versace designs are completely unique and one-of-a-kind. With that said, I truly believe that any collection can be translated into an everyday wardrobe. The trick is to capture the vibe and feeling of each look – the overarching aspect that inspires you.

Bright Colors

Versace is known for her use of bight colors every season and the spring collection was no exception. The bright and neon shades that came down the runway were definitely attention-grabbing but still managed to look wearable instead of over-the-top. A common color in the collection was bright yellow, seen on mini dresses, tops and micro skirts. Although most of us probably couldn’t pull of head-to-toe neon yellow (not that we’d really want to anyway), a pop of bold color is a great way to spice up an outfit.

Things to Keep in Mind:

• Resist the Bumblebee Syndrome. Yellow and black are great contrasting colors to incorporate into an outfit, but yellow and black head-to-toe clothing with a yellow purse and black boots? You’ll definitely be getting some bee comments.
• Choose your accessories wisely. A pop of bright color does a lot for an outfit on its own, so don’t go overboard with adornments.
• Be careful if you’re pairing two different yellow pieces together. Although some shades will complement each other nicely, others may clash. Try to liken the shade to another color – some yellows are more green, others are more orangey. Once you do that, you’ll have an easier time matching yellows to one another.

Sheer, Gingham and Checked

Ok, I know it sounds like a weird combination but just take a look through Donatella’s collection again. The looks are a mix of unexpected patterns and fabrics, but all of them are put together perfectly. A sheer blouse with a small print is perfect for both the office (with a pair of trousers) and class (skinny jeans and flats). But the fun part about the Versace collection is the versatility of the outfits for day and night wear. You just can’t go wrong with monochromatic shades.

Things to Keep in Mind:

• Don’t be afraid to experiment! Take the Versace look above – a structured mini skirt, a flowy blouse and a mix of patterns. The only way to achieve it is to play around with different pieces, so take a bunch of items into the dressing room and see what you come up with.
• I know Versace is the queen of skin-baring outfits – but take her looks with a grain of salt. I’m a big fan of the mini skirt, especially with Donatella’s fun colors and details, but it should be balanced with a long sleeve or loose fitting top. Think Hepburn, not Hilton.

Pretty Pastels

Donatella is known for her use of fun colors and in her spring collection, pinks and corals ruled the runway. With the mix of shades and the added embellishments, these looks could only be pulled off by young girls like us. Additionally, unlike the bright yellow hues above, light pinks and purples are much easier to mix and match.

Things to Keep in Mind:

• Don’t underestimate the power of a great statement-making mini skirt. Once you find a great piece, the combinations are endless!
• For those of you still stuck in the winter cold, pair a fun pastel top with a gray cardigan or shrunken blazer until Spring finally arrives.

Tying it All Together

Go back and take a look at Versace’s collection – the one that the designer said was inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Unlike other brands cashing in on the film, Donatella stayed away from the dark and somber colors in favor of pastels, neon brights and fun patterns. The looks that came down the runway were quintessential Versace and the epitome of young, fun, and fashionable.

Released in 1954, this film is about a man (James Stewart) who, while waiting for his broken leg to heal, starts watching the lives of his neighbors during a heatwave. When one of his neighbors goes missing, it’s up to him and his girlfriend (Grace Kelly) to discover the truth.

Grace Kelly’s style in Rear Window captures the classic look of the 1950s. Her outfits are elegant, demure and tailored. The film is full of long skirts, luxurious fabrics and interesting necklines. Also, her character is never without a the ultimate piece of classy jewelry: pearls.

If this classic style is something you love, here are four modern looks inspired by Grace Kelly’s style in Rear Window:

Outfit #1: Chic and Timeless

This gorgeous green dress captures the look and silhouette of many of the dresses worn in Rear Window, but at a more modern length. Outfit #2: Classically Casual

This is a casual interpretation of Grace Kelly’s outfits in Rear Window. The t-shirt is made out of a comfortable and crisp linen fabric and would look great when tucked into this high-waisted skirt. Belts that define the waist are used throughout the film and this woven skinny belt is a perfect modern way to get a similar look. These flats are comfortable yet chic and the bracelet is a modern take on the typical pearl bracelet.

Outfit #3: Spring in Your Step

This dress also captures the ’50s silhouette, this time with a fun floral print. Outfit #4: 1950’s Effortless

This is a direct interpretation of the final outfit Grace Kelly wears in the film. While jeans were only worn for casual occasions in the ’50s, the cuffed and cropped style was very popular. The button-up shirt is a classic piece in another warm-weather-friendly color, coral. These loafers are comfortable with a slightly masculine touch and the purse has a similar look to the loafers for a bit of ’50s matching. Finally, classic pearls are reinvented again, this time in a fun cocktail ring.

With spring break only a week or two away on campuses across the nation, many of you are probably starting to think about what to do, pack, and most importantly, what to wear!

Whether you’re heading on a beach vacation in the near future, or if you’re just planning on relaxing at home, these five outfit ideas will get you through the break and and inspire you to transition your wardrobe from winter to spring.

Outfit Number 1: Ready for Takeoff!

Though it’s best to forego most jewelry to avoid setting off the metal detectors, a cute scarf and oversized handbag are helpful travel accessories. A scarf will add punch and personality to your look, while the oversized bag can carry all of your essentials and anything from books to a wrap to a pair of flip flops for landing. Just make sure it still fits under your seat!

Outfit Number 2: Dinner With The Girls

When I put this look together, I had dinner on the beach in mind, but it would work equally well for a meal at any outdoor restaurant. The dress in this outfit is the perfect blend of casual and dressy: the cotton material gives it a relaxed feel, while the silhouette is still classically polished. The fun color also adds to the tropical feel! Since it can get cold at night, it’s always a good idea to bring a wrap or pashmina with you when you go out.

Outfit Number 3: Hitting the Beach

Swimming, surfing, sunning… what girl doesn’t love going to the beach?! Beach outfits are pretty simple–all you really need is a cute swimsuit, towel, cover-up, and flip flops.

Most importantly, don’t forget the sunscreen! Luckily, you’ve got a ton of options for sun protection. Burt’s Bees makes a great all natural option, Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry Touch works well for acne-prone skin, and Kiss My Face Face Factor sunscreen is water resistant. Try to use a sunscreen with AT LEAST an SPF 30 for days at the beach and tan safely. Wrinkly red skin is never in style!

Outfit Number 4: Exploring the City

Capris allow you to move freely, while the shoes are comfortable and cute, and the tank shows some skin. Hot outside? Ditch the capris and add a pair of shorts. Cold? Throw on the batwing top and layer! This outfit is more of an everyday look–something you can wear on campus as well when you get home! This is also a great option for your flight back home, just substitute the strappy sandals for flats and you’re good to go.

Outfit Number 5: Other Essentials

It’s always a good idea to throw a pair of jeans, a zip-up hoodie, and a basic tank in your suitcase wherever you’re going. A foldable pair of flats won’t take up much space, and can totally save your feet after a night (or day!) of wearing heels. These pieces are definitely college girl wardrobe staples whether you’re traveling or not.

My favorite essential, though, happens to be this travel beauty bag–it has internal compartments for easy organization and is small enough to fit into your purse. Remember to take out your mascara, liquid foundation, and perfume and put them into a quart sized bag before your flight, or store them in your checked luggage.

Ralph Lauren’s Spring 2010 RTW Collection was inspired by the American spirit. As Lauren wrote in his program notes, “I am inspired by the character of the worker, the farmer, the cowboy, the pioneer women of the prairies.” Over the past few weeks, the CF community has been buzzing about the Spring trends and how to make them your own, and Lauren’s Spring collection incorporates these hot trends in an all-American way.

It was cinematic, like most of Lauren’s collections. And it goes without saying that his vision is a romanticized one: Henry Fonda’s character in The Grapes of Wrath didn’t carry a lizard-skin bag. In fact, the show played like a rags-to-riches tale, a story line dear to the designer’s heart. After a few white cotton organdy dresses and some thirties-esque suits—think pinstriped three-pieces with cropped and gathered pants or a boxy d.b. with fuller trousers—the work jackets and carpenter pants reappeared in blue ombré silk charmeuse, the nightshirts came striped with beads, and the overalls were transformed into a floor-grazing lamé dress. – Style.com

Ralph Lauren’s collection is the epitome of all-American girl and another perfect addition to the growing list of Spring inspirations profiled here at College Fashion!

Look #1

Ralph Lauren has always been one of the best at capturing the classic tomboy vibe. With a mix of ripped jeans, newsboy caps and over-sized blouses, his Spring 2010 models looked like they could have stepped out of a 1920’s farm (albeit, a very chic one). I admit, I thought some of the looks that came down the runway were a little too over-the-top for daily wear (unless you’re on a Vogue photoshoot) but they are easily translated into budget-friendly looks.

Tips to Make it Work:

• Although cuffed boyfriend jeans are hard for many to pull off (especially if you’re on the shorter side), when they’re done right they really make a statement. A trick to making them work is to pair them with heels – they’ll elongate your legs a la the model above.
• Keep a balance within your outfit. Pair loose jeans with a tucked-in shirt, or skinny jeans with a loose button-up – don’t lose your shape!
• Tread carefully when recreating the all-American farm girl look to avoid actually looking like you just stepped off the farm..

Look #2

I fell in love with the breezy Springtime look below. The shirt dress gets a new spin when paired with a vest – which helps to add shape to an otherwise-shapeless frock. Lauren recreated the quintessential newsboy ensemble, and with a couple of swaps (like a pair of sandals instead of heels) the look becomes a perfect go-to for a day of lunch and shopping with your friends.

Tips to Make it Work:

• Don’t be afraid to show some leg – but be mindful of the weather. Most shirt dresses are quite loose at the bottom hem and may be subject to a windy day fly-up.
• Be mindful of your waist. Although mens shirts are meant to be loose, you don’t want to end up looking like you just grabbed something out of your Dad’s closet. Look for dresses with a belted waist or a slim fit (like the two above) to get the look and keep it flattering.
• Play around with vest styles and lengths; there are tons of different versions available. A long mens vest in black will create a completely different vibe than a cropped denim one – but that mixing and matching is what makes fashion fun!

Look #3

Oh, florals. Designers just can’t seem to get enough of them, can they? Floral print is always one of the hottest trends for Spring and a favorite of the writers here at CF. Lauren paired dainty versions of the print with the classic jean jacket and espadrilles to create a closet staple look that will take you through the warmer seasons this year.

Tips to Make it Work:

• Although the Ralph Lauren Spring 2010 collection is the epitome of all-American girl chic, the floral dress/jean jacket combo can easily translate into any style. Try a fitted tank dress and a cropped, distressed jacket for an 80’s vibe. Not your style? Try an a-line dress with opaque tights and flats to create a more preppy look.
• As always, try to find a balance between fitted and loose pieces. A ruffled or flowy dress can be easily balanced by a fitted jacket. Likewise, a tight dress works well with a loose-fitting denim jacket. Try to avoid pairing an oversized jacket and dress together. Similarly, don’t rock two skin-tight pieces at once.

Tying it All Together

Each season, Ralph Lauren’s collections are inspired by his love of the American spirit. His Spring ‘10 collection was no different. Pulling inspiration from the Great Depression and classic 1920’s and 30’s fashions, Lauren created looks that can be translated into every-day wear for college students on a budget. With such closet staples like jeans and button-up blouses, how can you go wrong?

For the first installment of our series on 10 more movies for fashion inspiration, today we’ll talk fashion inspiration from the film Bringing Up Baby. This movie, released in 1938, follows the crazy adventure of a scientist (Cary Grant) who meets a somewhat absent-minded and bold woman (Katharine Hepburn). The two end up in various predicaments, including taking care of a leopard named Baby.

Katharine Hepburn’s style in Bringing Up Baby can best be described as glamourous and elegant– very Old Hollywood. Every outfit had some kind of interesting detail, whether it was a bold sash, a ruffled collar or an oversized bow. The film even incorporated some menswear-inspired outfits that Ms. Hepburn was famous for wearing.

Here are three outfits inspired by Katherine Hepburn’s style in the film:

Outfit #1: Effortless and Chic

This outfit gives off a very 1930s vibe. This long-sleeved dress is conservative yet stylish in a pretty blue color. The cloche hat is similar to one Hepburn wears in the film with an adorable flower detail. The ring is a homage to Baby used in a modern way, while the t-strap shoes continue the vintage feel. As I mentioned before, Katharine Hepburn was famous for wearing menswear. At the time, the idea of women wearing pants in a film was very uncommon, but it was rumored that Hepburn convinced the studio to allow her to wear some in the movie in an unconventional way.

This outfit is perfect for the warmer weather that is (hopefully) right around the corner. These wide-leg pants are made of linen, which makes them super lightweight. They are also high-waisted– perfect for tucking the ruffled blouse into. These oxford pumps are a nod to menswear, but with a feminine touch. And the bag has intricate detail that is similar to the detailing on the lightweight gold cuff.

In the film, Katharine Hepburn’s character wears a gorgeous floor-length gold lamé gown, in an iconic scene. This is a modern take on that look: instead of a gold lamé gown, this dress has a metallic gold waistband and a classic shape. A patent clutch and some elegant earrings continue the glam yet classic look. Some leopard print heels add a fun touch and, again, pay tribute to Baby.

We don’t tend to worry so much about what will flatter our hips or waist the best because, for the most part, no one really scrutinizes that sort of thing during 8am calculus. But come time for a dinner out or a party, every college girl wants to look her best.

One of the key elements of looking fun and fierce for a night on the town is to keep your body type in mind. Just because a dress looks amazing on your roommate doesn’t mean it will look so hot on you. So, I’ve pulled together some basic going out looks sure to flatter five basic body shapes. Keep in mind that these rules apply whether you’re a size 2 or a size 12 – it’s all about flattering your body’s proportions, no matter your measurements.

Shape #1: Pear

The “pear” or “inverted triangle” body shape is generally smaller on top and wide at the hips. The most flattering look for this body shape is a high waisted a-line skirt that accentuates a small waist and slightly flares out from the hips. A form-fitting top with an interesting neckline or ruffle helps bring the eye up and balance the body’s proportions. Finish off the look with a classic pair of pointed toe pumps that lengthen the look of the entire lower body.

Shape #2: Apple

Whether you were born with a fuller mid-section or you’ve just developed one thanks to late night snacking in college, you’re an apple shape if you carry weight around your middle. While some might say this body type is difficult to dress, figure-flattery is easy thanks to this season’s cornucopia of flowy tunics. Steer clear of any tunics with an elastic banding at the bottom, though, as this can create an odd bubble effect. Make sure to pair loose tops with a pair of skinny jeans, to play up your fabulous legs and balance out the volume up-top.

Shape #3: Ruler

If you’re built like a supermodel with few curves to speak of, you can pretty much pull off anything. That said, if you want to create more of an hourglass shape, that’s possible with a bit of strategic dressing. One of the best ways to show off a straight figure and long legs is with a tight tank dress, capitalizing on this season’s bandage dress trend. Make your look pop with brightly colored high heels and trendy accessories.

Shape #4: Busty

If you are blessed with plenty of natural cleavage, you’re probably used to walking the fine line between looking matronly and falling out of your shirt. A moderately low-cut top that is neither too tight nor too loose is your best bet for a flattering night out look. You’ll look balanced and chic, and your body won’t appear to have been swallowed up by your upper half. A pair of slightly flared jeans with simple heels keeps your look balanced.

Shape #5: Hourglass

Like the ruler straight girls, you hourglass shaped ladies can get away with wearing almost anything. However, with such a feminine figure, you don’t want to go overly sexy with your wardrobe choices. Choosing a dress that is both soft and structured is a great way to go. A bright clutch, sky high heels, and a trendy oversized cocktail ring can help take some of the focus off your figure without detracting from your overall look.
