College will teach you many life lessons, but the first one I learned my freshman year was this: dorm rooms are small. My first year at Flagler, I shared a dorm with three other girls and quickly learned how valuable every square inch of space could be. I also discovered that the key to having more space is to be organized.

Now that my senior year has rolled around, I thought I’d share with you some of the best dorm organization items out there, in order to help you to utilize those precious square inches and enjoy every bit of small-space living. Also, if you’re living off-campus, no worries, these are great items for you too!

For your closet:

Product Information: Pop-up Hamper, Wheeled Hamper, Slim-line Hangers, Hanging Shelves, Expandable Shoe Rack, Over-the-Door Shoe Bag

• A laundry hamper is a must-have for any dorm room closet, and I featured two different styles above, both of which I highly recommend. Pop-up hampers are ideal for tiny closets – the mesh material is flexible, so it can be squeezed into tight spaces. I swear by the wheeled hampers though. Sure, they take up a little more space, but not having to lug heavy clothes back and forth to the laundry room makes them worth it.
• Slim-line hangers will give you more space for clothes because the hangers are much thinner than normal ones (hence the name). They’re also made out of a non-slip material, so your expensive top won’t slide off the hanger and end up crumpled on the floor like it could with plastic hangers.
• Running out of room in your dresser? Hanging shelves will give you more storage for your clothing. They take up a small bit of space in your closet, but can hold tons of sweaters, jeans and other bulky items.
• Shoe racks are ideal for dorms because it will keep all your footwear neatly organized in one place, so your shoes won’t be littered all over your closet floor. Over-the-door versions are roomy and can hold lots of shoes, but not all dorm closets have doors. So, I chose a shoe rack that expands and contracts, so you can adjust it to your specific closet size.

For your desk:

• If you retain one piece of advice from this post, I hope it’s this: invest in an accordion folder! Seriously, buy a good one and use it to organize all your important papers (hard-copies of research papers, bills, etc.). That way, you’ll be able to easily find everything you need in one tidy folder.
• Bookends can be a fun way to show of your personal style and keep your textbooks in pristine condition so you can get top dollar when book buyback rolls around. And how cute are these ones from Modcloth?!
• Since space is so limited in dorms, items that are multi-functional– like this desk organizer lamp– are ideal. In addition to providing light, it also acts as a pencil cup and has a speaker/hook-up for your iPod!
• A drawer organizer will keep all your excess school supplies organized so you’ll never have to dig through a messy drawer to find staples ten minutes before your big paper is due (believe me, I’ve been there).
• Okay, so a dry erase to-do list isn’t exactly necessary, but it will keep your schedule organized. Hang it near your desk, take a few minutes every Sunday to fill out your weekly schedule and you’ll never forget a deadline, event or a meeting with your advisor.
• Desktop drawers are a perfect solution for cluttered desks and can store all of the items that always seem go missing like headphones, camera chargers and USB drives. In addition, these pretty ones will look great on your desk.

Other Storage Solutions

• A 3-drawer cart can hold all those items you’re not quite sure about storing: sheets, hair styling tools, and even food! Plus, since it has wheels, you can easily move it around and use it as a writing surface or nightstand. I love this floral print cart – it would be a stylish addition to any dorm.
• If you’ve run out of space in your dresser and closet, stackable drawers are the answer. You can buy as many (or as few) as you want and you’ll have plenty of room for storing even the bulkiest of items. Another perk: these drawers can easily slide under your bed, so they won’t take up any floor space.
• Lined baskets are an adorable and functional way to store smaller items like hair products, make-up and toiletries.
• A storage ottoman is a great multi-use item for dorms. You can store things in it and then pop the lid on to create instant seating for friends.
• Although over-the-door hooks are usually designed for coats, I personally use mine for handbags. Multiple bags can be strung on each hook and the piece will still stay put, plus the bags won’t fall off.
• A hanging jewelry roll takes up less space than a jewelry box and will keep your necklaces tangle-free. It can also easily be rolled up and thrown into a duffel for impromptu weekend trips.

Blair’s dorm room is similar to her room at home in that she uses the finest and most elegant materials and accessories.  She even uses wallpaper, which is rarely allowed in dorm rooms. Although Blair’s exact dorm room is a bit impractical for college students, it is still a great source of inspiration. If you use bits and pieces of her room as inspiration, you can design an elegant room that fits your style and budget.  Some ideas include:

• Use cool, dark colors such as navy blue, deep purple, black, and even splashes of silver.
• Buy satin bedding, which will give off the same sheen as Blair’s silk bedding, but is much more budget-friendly.
• Include a portrait of Audrey Hepburn, Blair’s idol.
• Don’t use too many patterns; think simple and elegant.
• Buy room accessories that look tasteful and luxurious.

I’m a self-proclaimed slob. And no matter what my parents (and probably my roommates) think: no, I can’t help it. No matter how hard I work and how often I clean my room, all it takes is getting ready at night and the search for a perfect outfit to make it look like a tornado hit.

However, despite my general messy tendencies, the one thing that I CAN keep organized is my closet. I love my clothing more than anything else in my room, and therefore, I treat it well. My closet is always neat and organized, even when the rest of my room is a wreck.

That’s why I’m here to help you get your closet in shape for spring! With my tips below, you’ll learn how to clean out your closet, get it organized, and KEEP it organized for life. Interested? Read on to learn how.

Step 1: Clear Out Your Old Clothes

Getting rid of things is probably the hardest part of spring cleaning. If you’re like me, just as you’re about to toss those snakeskin pleather pants you wore once four years ago, you probably think to yourself, “What if they become trendy again?” Or when it comes time to ditch your favorite jeans that stopped fitting long ago, you think “But wait–maybe I will go from a size 6 to a 00 again someday!”

Luckily, being that girl, I’ve figured out how to get myself to let go of those tough-to-toss pieces with a mental dialogue like the following:

Think about this: even if tomorrow some celebrity (besides Lady Gaga), appeared on the cover of Vogue wearing snakeskin leather pants and they were suddenly deemed fashion-forward, are they your style? Would you take those pants out of storage and start to wear them again? If the answer is yes, your next question should be: Then why haven’t I worn them in years?

The most important thing about your style is that it’s yours. No matter what trends come and go, there are ones that you love and wear long past their trend-expiration date, just because you love them! There are some styles that look amazing on you and some that don’t accentuate your best qualities. At the end of the day, the things in your closet should all make you look good, and more importantly, feel good! If there’s something in your closet that doesn’t do these things (which is probably why you stopped wearing it in the first place), then it’s just taking away space from the items that do!

So, take all of those useless pieces out of your closet, bag ‘em and store ‘em in the corner of your room for now. We’ll discuss what to do with them later in this post.

Step 2: Evaluate Your Closet Space

Both my home and college closets have minimal space for anything other than hanging pieces, so I’ve had to invest a lot of money in closet organizers from places like Target and Bed, Bath & Beyond. Here are a few of my favorites and how to utilize them:

Huggable Hangers

Huggable Hangers – HSN

If you’re going to buy one single thing to help organize your closet, invest in these hangers. They will literally give you double the hanging space since they’re super thin, plus, the velvety material keeps your garments from slipping off and ending up on the closet floor. Even better, these hangers come in a million colors to fit your personal style. They’re a worthwhile investment that you’ll have for years.

Adhesive Hooks

Command Hooks – Amazon

These hooks are also a great thing to have for your dorm room in general, but they work amazingly well in closets. You can hang necklaces, bags, towels, and robes on these hooks, and they tend to stay up for a while unless you hang something that’s way too heavy. You can put them anywhere, and don’t worry about getting them off at the end of the year–they are easy to remove and won’t leave a trace.

This shoe organizer is perfect for a cramped closet. It fits right at the end or the beginning of your closet rod, and takes up minimal vertical space. It’s also perfect for a closet with a high rod, since it hangs pretty low. It keeps shoes off the floor, paired together, and visible, all in one spot.

These storage cubes saved my life in my dorm closet. Since my closet is very small, but has a high rod to hang things from, I had plenty of space below my clothes, but not much space anywhere else. These cubes fit below my clothes and are perfect for bulkier, foldable items that you don’t need to worry about wrinkling, such as towels, sweatpants and sweatshirts. Plus, you can build them the way you want. Here, the section with the balls is a crate, but you don’t necessarily need to build your cubes this way!

Bed Risers

Bed risers are the perfect way to increase storage space in a small dorm. You insert them under each of your bed’s posts, and they instantly raise your bed to reveal more floor storage space. With these risers, you will be able to fit crates, boxes, or even your suitcases underneath your bed to hide them from view and free up space elsewhere in your room. I store all the things I rarely need under my bed, but I also have two small easy-to-grab cube-crates that contain my blow dryer, flat iron and other beauty products so that they’re easily accessible.

Step 3: Find Your Clothing Organization Method

Some people like to organize their CDs by decade, some like to organize them alphabetically. Clothing, too, can be organized in various ways. Here are a few suggestions:

- By type of apparel. Put dresses with dresses, tees with tees, and jeans with jeans. Within each category, you can further organize by event, i.e. more formal dresses stay together and sundresses stay together within your dress section.

- By color. Color coding your closet is an easy (and pretty) way to find exactly what you want. If you’re in the mood for something pink, you go to your pink section. This organization method is best when all different types of clothing (skirts, shorts, tops, pants, etc.) are separated, so that you can find what type of piece you want before deciding what color you want it in.

- By occasion. You can also organize your pieces by the occasion they’re for. Keep formal pieces (things you would wear to a wedding or other special event) in one part of your closet, semi-formal/going out clothes in another, and more casual/daily clothes in your final section.

- By season. If you have a big closet, you can probably organize your clothing by season. Even better, you can find a way to store off-season pieces a little higher up than current-season pieces, and find a way to easily rotate them once the weather changes!

Step 4: Just Do It!

Now that you’ve cleared out your old clothes, made some space and decided on an organization-game plan, CLEAN! Pull out everything from your closet, lay it on your bed, and begin organizing! You can organize things on the floor or your bed before they even get into the closet, or you can organize as you grab each item.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you clear your schedule and set a goal to finish your organizing and not get distracted. Once your spring closet clean is complete, you’ll feel so accomplished! But there’s one more thing you can do to really complete your spring cleaning…

Step 5: What About Your Old Clothes?

There are a few things you can do with the old clothing you’ve decided to dispose of:

- Donate it. Whether it’s to a local homeless shelter, one of the clothing drop boxes around your neighborhood, or a Salvation Army, donating your old clothing will make you feel great and will benefit someone else’s life in the process.

- Sell it. These days, it’s so easy to sell your old things online. Hello, eBay! If you’re the typical broke college student, selling your old clothing (and any other old items you have) is a great way to make bank. You know what they say: one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

- Hand it down. Do you have younger siblings, cousins or friends of the family who have children the size of your old clothing? Let them rifle through and see if they find anything they like. Maybe they’ll think of your snakeskin pleather pants as “dress up” clothes!

- Make something. Whether it’s using old t-shirts to make a scarf or turning jeans into a pocketbook, there are a million creative things you can do with your old clothing! I’ve personally always wanted to take my old t-shirts that hold memories (such as from camp and high school events) and turn them into a quilt! Editor’s Note: Every Sunday, Blair shows us how to decorate our apartment or dorm without spending a fortune. Since your room says as much about you as your outfit, what do you want yours to say? This week, she’ll show you how to give an old piece of furniture a makeover for cheap!

Have you ever envisioned the perfect piece of furniture but weren’t able to find it anywhere? Or have you found something you loved in a store but couldn’t afford the hefty price tag?

With a little knowhow and some DIY skill, those problems will be a thing of the past! This article will show you how to turn old furniture you find in your attic, at yard sales, or at thrift stores into new and unique furniture you’ll love!

The Process

Step 1: Go hunting!

The first step in creating your own unique piece of furniture is to find an old piece that you want to remake.

Look around your parent’s attic, thrift stores, and on craigslist. Examine each piece and envision what you could turn it into! You can start small with things like picture frames, small tables, or stools, but eventually you might want to look for pieces like chairs, dressers, and desks for the best savings and style potential.

Step 2: Prep work

After you’ve found something you’d like to remake, it’s time to get it ready!

In order to make your furniture beautiful, you first need to clean it and prep it for painting. I usually just fill the sink with hot water and a little bit of dish soap, then use a rag to wash off the surface. I do this a few times, letting the piece dry in between each step. That way, you can get off all the dirt and oils that might prevent it from holding paint.

Next, use steel wool or sandpaper to rough up the surface of the wood. Creating a rough surface is crucial to getting your paint job to stay!

Finally, wash off the dust you’ve created from sanding. Now your piece is ready for priming.

Step 3: Priming

Now it’s time to prime your piece of furniture to get it ready for painting!

I usually use a water based, stain blocking primer, but make sure to talk to a customer service representative when you buy your paint. The most important part is finding a primer and a paint that work together! For example, you can’t use an oil-based primer with acrylic paint.

Step 4: Painting

This is the fun part! I usually use an acrylic paint in a color that I love. Acrylic paint is much easier to use (and way easier to clean up), but if your furniture is going to be subjected to a lot of wear an tear, oil based paint might be the best bet. Either way, make sure to follow the directions on the can… and the more coats, the better!

Step 5: Enjoy!

Once your furniture has completely dried, put it in your room, sit back, and be proud of your handiwork!

• paintbrushes and/or rollers
• primer and paint that go together in a color you love!

The First Step: Determine Your Personal Interior Style

You probably already know what your tastes are in fashion. That same style radar can be used to tune into interior design as well! The trick is figuring out what you like and turning it into a reality in your room.

3 Fun Ways to Find Your Interior Style

1. Figure out what inspires you and determine why it does.

Scour blogs, online picture galleries, magazines, friends’ rooms, anywhere you can find! Pick out images that you find inspirational and keep track of them. Keep a file of pictures that jump out at you either on your computer (you could use Evernote) or on paper. Then, go through the pictures and figure out what elements of the room drew you to the picture at first glance.

Enjoy! And remember, these are just to help you find pictures that can guide you to your personal taste. They don’t necessarily have to be pictures of bedrooms.

2. Take hints from what you already have.

Look at the particular pieces of furniture or decorations that you already have and love. Basing your room around one particular item can lead to a disaster, but if you have a few pieces that you really love, think about how they go together and what would be a good complement or contrast to them.

3. Take a quiz!

As far as dorm room accessories go, so long as you are allowed to bring it (check with your school if you aren’t sure), practically anything goes!

One of the rules I mentioned in my post on dorm room bedding applies to decorations too – you have the whole rest of your life to go with “practical” furnishings. College is your time to go all out, where it’s socially acceptable to have a completely crazy room if that’s what you want. Have fun with it!

Why are storage containers so important to shop for? Dorm rooms are usually tiny – way smaller than you’d probably expect, and therefore you’re going to need to find ways to store all your stuff in order to maximize your space.

Also, if you love fashion, you’re going to need enough room to store all your clothes, shoes and accessories. Dorm room closets are usually not very large, so you need to get creative with your storage choices.

Fortunately, there are tons of great options when it comes to shopping for storage containers, and there are lots of ways to hide your stuff creatively.

A few tips to keep in mind when shopping for dorm room storage:

1. Go vertical. Horizontal space is limited in a dorm room, so you are going to want to maximize every inch you have. Get tall shelves for your room that aren’t too wide, and lots of hooks for your walls.
2. Raise your bed up. A great space to store stuff that you don’t use very often is under your bed. Definitely buy a set of bed risers and get some containers for under-bed storage to make the most of that space.
3. Get portable storage. Take into account the weight and portability of every storage container you buy. Ideally, you want to be able to move without unpacking much stuff. If you can find durable containers with handles, it will make moving in and out of your dorm so much easier.

Furnishing a dorm room is easy because most of what you need will come with your room (desk, closet, bed, dresser.) It is also tricky at the same time because you are working with a very small space. Here are my top tips for shopping for dorm room furnishings.

1. Talk to your roommate. You will save yourself a lot of time and money if you talk to your roommate about who’s bringing what for your room. You don’t want to get to school on move in day with two of everything – there won’t be enough room for it all.
2. Check your college’s website. They should list what is going to come with your room, as well as any items that are off-limits, so you will have a good picture of what’s missing and what you need to buy.
3. Invest in storage bins. You won’t realize how much stuff you have until you try and pack it up. Buy some good quality plastic storage bins and moving will be easier – plus, you’ll have a place to put everything.
4. Don’t get heavy furniture.Trust me on this one. The lighter the better is the rule for furniture in college. Don’t bring a huge armoir that takes 3 people to lift. It’s much more of a hassle than you’re going to want to deal with.
5. Get lamps. Dorm rooms usually come equipped with one big fluorescent light that is supposed to provide lighting for the entire room. First of all, its usually not bright enough. Also, when your roommate wants to sleep but you have a paper to write, you’ll be happy to have a small desk lamp on your side of the room.
6. Buy a rug. Dorm room floors are normally cold and linoleum. They aren’t cozy or homey, so I recommend investing in a good quality, durable rug for your floor to make your room more livable. Get a dark color so you won’t have to worry about stains.

One quick thing to note: College is THE time to go crazy with your room decorations. Once you’re living in the adult world, it will no longer be as acceptable to have a hot-pink bed, purple mini fridge, and strings of Christmas lights hanging everywhere in your apartment. This will be a multi-part series I’ll be posting over the next few days. Today I’m going to focus on Dorm Room Bedding. There are so many options out there in terms of duvet covers and sheet sets, which I’m going to feature at the end of this post. First, here are a few tips on buying bedding for college:

4 Tips on Buying Bedding for College

1. Get extra-long twin sheets. That’s the number one rule for dorm room bedding, which they probably tell you at orientation. Normal twin size sheets won’t fit the beds, and you need to get XL-Twin.
2. Don’t get white bedding. In college, your dorm room is where you spend most of your time – whether it’s studying, pre-gaming, hanging out with friends or even eating. Since there isn’t much room for chairs in the typical dorm, your bed is going to be like a couch most of the time. Therefore, if you get white bedding, it will be stained/ruined by the end of the semester. Go for darker colors when it comes to college bedding.
3. Buy a few sets of sheets. You aren’t going to feel like doing laundry more often than every 2-weeks, and if you only have one set of sheets, they’re going to get grungy. Oh, and message to the boys: you need to wash your sheets more than once a year! If you’re lazy, get a few sheet sets and swap them out regularly.
4. Buy a mattress pad. Trust me – the mattress your dorm room comes with is going to be hard as a rock! Get a good mattress pad (memory foam is amazing but pricey; egg crate pads are another decent option) and your back will thank you!

• College Dorm Room Shopping Part 4: Decorations

Thankfully, affordable furniture retailer IKEA has your dorm room covered. The company has just launched the new college dorm website Roommate Living, which features lots of cute and affordable furniture and dorm room decorations.

The Roommate Living website also mentions IKEA’s College Night, which is Wednesday July 25th from 6-9 PM. At participating IKEA stores on that night, you can get “advice on what you need for your dorm or off-campus housing.”

If you’re going to attend college night at IKEA, don’t forget to bring your high school senior or college ID. Students with ID’s will be entered to win free furnishings, IKEA gift cards, meals, or an entire purchase for free.
