5 Fabulous Tips for Styling Short Hair
As a short-haired girl, I sometimes feel a little left out by fashion and beauty magazines, which is why I wanted to write this article. Short hair can seem to lack versatility, but it’s easier than you think to switch up your look! All you need is a little creativity.
Here are 5 simple and chic tips for changing up your short hair on a day-to-day basis!
1. Go curly! If you have slightly longer short hair (say, a bob), don’t be afraid to use a curling iron or some rollers to get cute curls! Kirsten Dunst (far right picture above) looks so gorgeous with her blonde curly bob! I use a curling iron to give my short hair a little flip sometimes, or even just to add some texture for a night out.
2. Don’t be afraid of texture. Pomade and hairspray are a short-haired girl’s best friends! Every day, I use a straightener on my bangs and then some strong hold pomade to give my hair a messy texture – it can switch your hair from a “regular” look to a rocker chic look in just one step!
3. Spike it. One of the greatest things about having a true pixie cut is the ability to play with the height of your hair. Spikes can look cute and feminine when you have the right cut. Just be careful not to overdo it – less is more when it comes to spikes!
4. Use barrettes. One of my favorite things to do on a daily basis is to pin my bangs to the side. I use brightly colored barrettes that you can buy cheaply at any drug store. If you want to go the DIY route, you could also decorate your own plain colored barrettes or safety pins with some cute buttons and hot glue!
5. Implement headgear! Hair accessories are fabulous for short-haired girls. I wear headbands, hats, and headscarves all the time! And seriously, how chic does Victoria Beckham look with that headband above!? Headgear is one of the best ways to switch up your short hair day-to-day — or to keep you from going crazy while growing it out.
What do you think?

Thank you SO much! I’ve been looking all over the internet for ways to style short hair (I’ve actually been thinking about getting mine cut, and last week I printed out the same picture of Katie Holmes!). I love, love, love this article! Great job :)

Haha, Tia I also want to cut my hair and had the Katie Holmes pic as inspiration.

So I don’t technically have short hair, but I do love fun headbands. I just bought a really fun one at a craft market in Boston. Here’s a “twitpic” from the designer- @pleaseandthankyou
I love supporting local artists, and this headband was a steal at just $15!

Thank you for this post! I love your site – but this may top my list of best posts.

This is the perfect article for me! I really like idea #2, I will certainly try that at some time. I’m trying to grow my hair out, but this provides me with good inspiration while it is in the “in between” stage (which I HATE).

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

My hair is so awkward right now! Post-pixie and pre-bob. I’m making great use of numbers 4 and 5 in the hopes that the more ridiculous the headwear, the less noticeable my hair.

I have veeeery curly and short hair. Ever since I went short, I let the curls roam free and do as they like, I do use copious amounts of mouse to keep it from turning into an afro anf it takes me three minutes to get ready.
I looove short hair!

Thank God someone decided to do this! I’ve had short hair FOREVER and there are only ever style suggestions for medium to long hair! Pomade is something I didn’t think of – but I rock the curls often ;)

I have short hair and I’m always wearing headbands! It’s super cute and a fun way to spruce up your look.

I feel like you need to be very thin to rock the short hair well…because doesn’t longer hair slim your face more?
Michelle - College of Idaho
Maggie – I don’t think one necessarily has to be thin to rock short hair. It’s all about picking the right haircut/hair style for your face shape. I have a really round face (like really round) and with really long hair, my face tends to look rounder because long hair drags my face down! Almost every single woman can rock short hair, it just has to be the right hair cut! Some women look better with pixies, some with bobs, some with in between – it just depends! :)
Glad you guys are loving the article – thanks for your great feedback!

Thankyouthankyouthankyou! I just got my hair cut super short (a la Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby) and, even though I love it, I’m a bit lost with what to do with it. I’m so grateful for the idea to sport hats and headbands-off to Forever 21!

I’d love to wear headbands, but for some reason I can never figure them out! They always look weird on me.

thank you so much for this articleee!! i actually have long hair but the last 3 weeks i am thinking of cutting it short! the ideal haircut for me would be the one that Agyness Deyn has but almost everyone i ask says i should not cut it :P…i still insist on doing it..but the problem is that if i dont like how it came out i will have to wait ages until it gets to the length it has now..:/..:P
