As the holiday season shifts into high gear, so begins the prime time of year for family dinners and themed parties. With so many events to attend, now is the perfect time to try out a bold – but classic – new beauty look that’ll be sure to turn heads.
Even though these looks require a little extra effort, we know all our readers can pull off these bold beauty moves with ease. Read on for 5 gorgeous beauty looks to try this holiday season.
Braided Updo

For an unexpected and effortlessly chic look, a braided updo is a perfect choice. It’s pretty and polished, yet still young and fun.
To get this look, start with second day hair or spritz on some dry shampoo for texture. Next, part your hair down the middle, separate into low pigtails, and braid both sections of hair, securing each one with a clear elastic. Then, wrap each strand over the top of your head and secure with bobby pins. Finish by misting with a medium hold hairspray.
Jewel Toned Eyes

Jewel-toned eyeshadow is always a fall favorite, and has been an especially popular beauty trend for fall 2012. There are so many ways to wear these purples, deep blues, and emeralds, from a jewel-toned smokey eye, to a less intense look using a jewel-toned eyeliner.
For a more intense look, layer colors over a matte black shadow. Or, for a more funky spin on this look, try a blue or purple mascara! This style is perfect for a night out catching up with friends.
Bold Lips

There’s nothing more sophisticated or timeless than a red lip, making it the perfect choice for holiday parties.
As you probably know, there are a million shades of red out there to choose from – if you’re not sure which one to try, consider your coloring: Warm-toned reds look best on golden skin tones, and blue-toned reds look best on cooler skin. It also helps to hit the drugstore and simply experiment!
In addition to the wide range of shades available, there are also many finishes to choose from — matte, sheer, or creamy lipstick, glosses, and stains are all popular choices. For a color that will last through dinner and drinks, try a matte formula layered over a lip stain like Revlon Just Bitten Lip Stain in Gothic. If you’re new to bold red shades, start with a red gloss or sheer lipstick, like Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in Candy Apple.
Glittery Eyes

While glittery makeup may seem over-the-top for most occasions, this dazzling look is perfect for a holiday soirée. Rather than packing your entire lid with glitter, which can come off as garish, try dabbing glitter over a smokey eye or a dark eyeshadow for a small pop of sparkle.
If the thought of adding glitter to your makeup routine intimidates you, try using an eyeliner with very fine glitter already in it. I swear by e.l.f liquid eyeliner in Copper ($1.00) for a subtle, yet flirty pop of glitter.
Old Hollywood Curls

A hint of old Hollywood glamour adds a romantic and elegant touch to any holiday ensemble, making retro-styled waves perfect for formal holiday get-togethers.
To get the look, start by creating a deep side part. Then, take a 1-inch curling iron and curl all of your hair inward, wrapping sections around the barrel towards your face. Once you’re done curling all of your hair, mist with a medium hold hairspray and let your curls cool. After the hair has cooled, brush through your hair with a paddle brush, making sure to brush away from your face. Finish with a final veil of hairspray.

LOVE this post so much! The jewel-toned eyes are beyond stunning, and Hollywood curls always look incredible. I’ve never been able to pull off bold lips though…I need to find the right shade! Maybe you guys could do a post on red lipsticks for different skin tones! =)

Can you do a post on Christmas dresses/skirts for a family party? I need something pretty/girly but not overly fancy :)

Wow I love this! I’m not much of a beauty person so once I saw the title I was skeptical I would find any I’d actually want to try but… I love almost all of them! I will definitely be doing a jewl toned eye shadow and red lip, I also really want to try glitter in my eye shadow and I’ve always wanted to do retro curls but have never been successful. Great post!
